Was it an EMU or SMU200/220?  8 minutes late into Nerang would be about right.

Could have been an IMU/SMU260. Delay them long enough on the Beenleigh section and they just can't gain time on the 140kph section with the limited stops. If it was an EMU enjoy it while it lasts. Nothing like an EMU screaming and rocking at full speed ;D

Blunder on Queensland, blunder on ....

The TMR once said our suggestions to put beams and tell tales and the like couldn't be done.  Well they did eventually do some and where they have done them the strike rate is now near zero.

============================

Media Release 24 July 2010 re-released 23 November 2011

SEQ:  Bridge strikes continue amidst the chaos on south-east Queensland roads

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport commuters has again called for urgent action to bring bridge strikes under control (1). The implementation of a policy that works to eliminate rail and road bridge strikes by heavy road vehicles should be well within the bureaucratic capability of Queensland Transport.

"Yesterday, yet another heavy vehicle struck a rail bridge on the Ipswich railway line.  Clearly, the present system of drivers theoretically knowing the travelling height and width of their vehicle before they start a journey is not working.  Warning signs are ignored."

"There is increasing frustration at the local government level and within the public transport community generally at the failure to roll out solutions to fix this problem."

"Warning devices such as tell tails, and protective crossbeams on busy thoroughfares on the approaches to over bridges should be mandatory, and with today's electronic and satellite navigation systems further back up warning alerts are possible. Full cost recovery for the chaos caused by bridge strikes and licence sanctions are also necessary."

"It is farcical that these bridge strikes are allowed to occur month after month with seemingly little action to address the fundamental issues.  A Government is elected to act.  It is time that action was taken."

"The serious risk of bridge strikes is that eventually a major incident may occur with possible loss of life."

"The disruption to the transport network that follows these bridge strikes is costly for the community.  We call on Queensland Transport to snap into gear and address the problem of bridge strikes with some urgency. We call on the Minister for Transport to direct that Queensland Transport snaps into gear!"

What, the big yellow warning sign isn't visible enough???!!!!

Just what do we need to do?  Fit bridges with gigawatt laser defence systems and vaporise the twits?

Stillwater

How hard is it to erect a gantry with dangling lengths of chain, their extremity indicating the hight of the portal? Hit the chain on the approach and you scratch the roof of your cab, resulting loud noise means apply brake.  Do we have to issue instructions to truckies about how to scratch their bum?

I agree. You see these in some places but not others. Perhaps they are more common interstate.

I think councils need to erect these at all low bridges. Paul Tully (Ipswich councillor) keeps complaining about the bridge at Goodna being struck. A loud dangling noise just before a truck hits a bridge should help. Some damage may occur but nowhere nearly as much damage as hitting the bridge itself.

HTG & Simon, not sure of the type of train, it was a newer one without carpet on the floors, no doors in each set of three either. Also, the toilet washbasin did not have water in the front toilet.

No trains between Petrie and Northgate

There are no trains running between Petrie and Northgate stations due to an overhead power fault near Bald Hills. Bus will replace trains stopping all stations, however there is limited capacity. Customers should:

* Expect major delays during this morning's peak.

* Use alternate transport, such as buses

* Avoid unnecessary travel during this morning's peak wherever possible.

* Keep checking the TransLink website, twitter, listen to your local radio station and Queensland Rail staff at the station for updated information

A freight train brought down muliple wires at Bald Hills station early this morning, just before 3:00am.

Question: Why are freight trains bringing down the wires?
This is not the first time that this has occurred.

Confirm that Mozz,

Over-crowded platforms at Petrie station, not enough buses for the pax despite the wires coming down before 3:00am this morning, our train was queued up at Narangba and then Dakabin.
No announcements were made on my train, 6:14am ex-Nambour service, until I tweeted about this fact.
People from unstaffed stations had no idea about the interruptions.
Local radio announcements made this morning were good.

It is extremely difficult to find buses during the peak periods, at short notice, as they are virtually all committed to their normal commuter/school runs and so forth.

They found 22 buses which is fairly remarkable in itself.

I agree it's always going to be very difficult during peak times and for the reasons you mention.
Not so sure it's short notice given the timing of the incident was around 3am, 2-3 hours earlier.

Good reason to have diesels on hand perhaps ...

But even the diesel trains weren't running.  The Spirit of the Outback (I think it was) was stopped at Beerwah, there was some passengers transferring off it onto the city train, because they were told they might get to the city quicker that way.  This was for the 6.22 at Beerwah.

My train had announcements all the way in.

PollyWouldLikeASeat

Yes and before anyone points out the obvious I realise the diesel trains would not be able to get through as it would pose a danger to the repair crews.

HappyTrainGuy

Not to mention the difficulties involved with shunting them ie what to do once they clear the section with a diesel still attached to the front.
