A PLASTIC bag on overhead lines has caused some minor disruption to City train services this morning.

Queensland Rail was forced to close a line to remove the bag, at about 5.30am which created some logistical problems in terms of getting carriages to where they needed to be.

A Translink spokesman said a Cleveland train was forced to leave from Manly instead of Cleveland and a Beenleigh to Bowen Hills service departed from Sunnybank.

Services are now running as normal.

But there are long delays on the Caboolture line due to a points failure at Lawnton.

All city bound services will stop at Petrie and all north bound services will stop at Strathpine.

Buses have commenced transporting passengers between Petrie and Strathpine.

Delays are expected to continue until after peak hour concludes.

Rail authorities have warned of lengthy delays on the Caboolture line caused by a points failure at Lawnton, in Brisbane's north.

Buses will be used to ferry passengers between Petrie and Strathpine, while all north-bound trains will stop at Strathpine.

No guards, so trains late

COMMUTERS on the southeast's Caboolture line have been delayed for more than three hours after infrastructure failed and train guards did not turn up to work.

TransLink reported a points failure on the Caboolture line at Lawnton about 7.30am, while passengers travelling from Landsborough were told several guards did not turn up to work this morning.

Passenger David Morris said he had been commuting since 6.25am.

"I normally take the 6.25am service from Landsborough, but I was told there was a delay - a guard said there weren't enough guards.''

"The delays have been happening more regularly over the last fortnight.'' He said some people had given up and returned home, after waiting a Petrie for a bus.

He said more than 3000 passengers were affected by the delays this morning. The problem was fixed about 9.50am, and train were expected to return to normal by 10am.

Earlier, a plastic bag on overhead lines has caused some minor disruption to City train services ont he Cleveland Line.

Queensland Rail was forced to close a line to remove the bag on the Cleveland line at about 5.30am which created some logistical problems in terms of getting carriages to where they needed to be.

A Translink spokesman said a Cleveland train was forced to leave from Manly instead of Cleveland and a Beenleigh to Bowen Hills service departed from Sunnybank.

this is now getting ridiculous can we make up a tally for each month?
"Where else but Queensland?"

Great idea O_128.

How about a lost travel-time log to give a true representation of the punctuality and quality of services.
We could have a competition to come up with a great acronym for the new measurement.

e.g. every train that is say 12 minutes late by the time it reaches it's destination, would equal 12 points
and for every train that is cancelled, the point score would be the complete scheduled travel time
of the service (in minutes),
e.g. Nambour to Roma Street service 6:09am to 8:18am if cancelled, would equal 129 minutes and therefore 129 points.

This total figure could then be compared to the total travel-time of all services, and expressed as a %age
and even broken up into individual branch lines also. It would clearly show the effective reduction in services caused by delays and cancellations.

What do other commuters think ?

I just thought a simple calendar function to log the faults of when, what type and time lost (how much time wasted x passengers). Otherwise it could just be another thread.

IMHO these almost daily track and network failures should be ringing alarm bells, if not just on convenience grounds but safety grounds and public expectations to have a functioning, reliable service. Sure there are all sorts of issues that contribute to lateness and failures that one could say are outside the control of QR etc. But that is missing the point.
This could be a sign pointing to potentially something wrong deep within the organisation/network.

I wonder where the regulator is in all of this? And why this is not being investigated?
Translink probably has the closest interest as it co-ordinates services, contracts them and pays for them. But TL does not do safety inspections, has no regulatory powers, and IIRC does not issue fines for breach of service obligations/bad performance (correct me if I'm incorrect).

Presumably then the responsibility for rail regulation falls onto the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
What are they doing?

Strangely, I haven't heard of faults, failures or disruptions to freight.

Ferny Grove trains stopped by track fault

Ferny Grove trains stopped by track fault
Article from: The Courier-Mail

LATEST: PASSENGERS are reporting huge queues at train stations on the Ferny Grove line this morning, after a track fault at Windsor halted services.

The trains have been replaced by just 12 buses stopping at stations from Mitchelton to Bowen Hills.

But passengers said the buses were nowhere near enough to transport the large volume of commuters who normally use the "standing room only'' peak hour service.

"The queue at Mitchelton is phenomenal,'' said Rebecca.

"It's all along the ramps and right back through the side street.''

Others claim not to have seen any buses in over an hour of waiting for transport.

A Translink spokesman said the disruption was likely to continue beyond the morning peak hour.

Delays have also been experienced on other lines because of a track fault between Central and Roma Street stations.

The spokesman said the problem caused delays of up to 15 minutes for citybound trains from Beenleigh, Ipswich and Cleveland.

The issue was rectified just before 9am.

So far this week, more than one in five trains have been late or cancelled due to ``track faults'' or ``points problems'', according to Queensland Rail's on time performance monitor.

Trains cancelled, stations closed amid more rail pain

QuoteTrains cancelled, stations closed amid more rail pain
MARISSA CALLIGEROS
November 5, 2009 - 8:08AM

An electrical fault has forced the closure of seven stations in Brisbane's inner-north, causing lengthy delays for passengers on the Ferny Grove line.

There are now further delays for inbound commuters due to a track fault between Central and Roma Street stations.

The track fault at Windsor has closed the Ferny Grove line between Mitchelton and Bowen Hills stations, causing delays of more than 30 minutes for commuters, who are having to wait for shuttle buses.

A Translink spokesman said 12 shuttle buses were transporting commuters between Mitchelton and Bowen Hills.

City-bound rail commuters at Mitchelton, Gaythorne, Enoggera, Alderly, Newmarket, Wilston and Windsor stations will need to board buses to Bowen Hills station, before boarding a CityTrain to the CBD.

Yet all CBD-bound trains are being forced to stop at Central station's Platform 6, as a result of the track fault at Roma Street.

The Ferny Grove line was closed about 6.20am, after the 5am and 5.30am services from Ferny Grove to Beenleigh were cancelled due to another track fault.

The 6.47am service from Doomben to Corinda was cancelled to due an electrical fault.

Rail lobby group Rail: Back on Track has blamed shoddy maintenance for the frequent track faults on the Brisbane rail network and has called for Translink to refund fares to passengers who are delayed.

QuoteQR has advised TransLink that all train services are gradually returning to normal after earlier track faults near Central station.

Yeah, right.  I've just come home to phone through my apologies to 2 meetings after the Shorncliffe to Corinda train failed to show at 9.15 - we got an apology at 9.20, saying that there was a 'points failure' between Roma St and Bowen Hills.

Fares_Fair

Sorry to hear it Emmie.
You are not alone.

With the sudden onset of multiple "point failures", it seems QR Network just don't get the point !
Maintain the lines and network and minimise the failures.  :pr

Was supposed to catch the 6.31am Caboolture service to catch the 6.38 am Nambour service at Caboolture and it never showed up, I waited until the Nambour train flew past before walking home and jumping into the car.

The next available service to for me to catch would of been the 8.37am Caboolture train (there are 649 Railbuses before then but I wanted to go to Maroochydore and those buses only meet the trains with exception to 1 north and south railbus service).

This has happened before a few times over the last 5 years, and sometimes the staff at Morayfield would be on the ball and organise the Nambour train to stop for us or they would orgainse a couple of taxis for us if you complained.  Just coulcn't be bothered today.

Due to their being no sign of any replacement buses at Enoggera at 07:15am, I decided to get a normal bus to work instead. With extremely good luck, I caught the 351 within a minute, and then waited less than a minute at Normanby for a (otherwise empty) 393 to RBWH. Ended up in work only 2 minutes later than if I had caught the train!
