There seems to be a higher number than usual of train faults over the past few weeks.  Is it possible to confirm somehow the nature of those faults?

Yes, there has been.  The problem is Queensland Rail are not public forthcoming about the causes and it is complicated because the NGRs are not under QR control so that has be taken through TMR.   I am monitoring closely and will probably put in RTIs at the end of the month.

A significant problem is door issues both fleets I understand.

Re: Queensland Rail Citytrain service disruptions due to train faults on the increase ...

Greetings,

Yesterday the Citytrain network ended up significantly disrupted due to storm activity.

Prior to the storms there were 13 service disruptions notified by TransLink due ' train faults '.
(See https://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=1862.msg232480#msg232480 )

What is the exact nature of these train faults please?  Looking at the line distribution it would seem both the older trains of the fleet are giving problems as well as the much newer New Generation Rollingstock (NGR) trains.

There are enough problems for the rail operator, and passengers, having to cope with bridge strikes, overhead power failures, signalling failures, police incidents etc. without having to worry about the increasing number of services cancelled or delayed due to ' train faults '.

Advice from the Minister for Transport as to what these ' train faults ' are and what is being done to improve train reliability would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Queensland Rail Citytrain service disruptions due to train faults on the increase ...

Greetings,

At RAIL Back On Track we monitor the reported service disruptions on the Citytrain network ( https://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=1862.0 ).  Lately the number of service cancellations, alterations and/or delays reported due to ' train faults ' seems to be on the increase.  When there is limited service frequency, service cancellations due to train faults is a significant  problem for the passengers.

For example last evening (18th January 2020) the Sunshine Coast services and a Gold Coast service were again disrupted:

As reported by TransLink on https://twitter.com/TransLinkSEQ  -

The 7.07pm Nambour line train has been cancelled due to a train fault at Palmwoods station. Alternative transport has been arranged to transport customers.

====

The 9.08pm Nambour to Central station train has been cancelled due to a train fault. Alternative transport has been arranged to transport customers between Nambour and Central station.

====

The 8.10pm Varsity Lakes to Roma street station train has been cancelled due to a train fault. The next Varsity Lakes to Roma street station train will depart Varsity Lakes station, platform 2 at 8.40pm.

====

The 8.53pm Gympie North to Roma Street train has been cancelled from Nambour to Roma Street due to a train fault. Alternative transport has been arranged for passengers travelling from Nambour to Roma Street.

We hope that something is being done to try to improve the reliability of the Citytrain fleet.  It is difficult for the public to have confidence in the network with these constant disruptions.  It is more than an inconvenience, it can mean missed appointments, missed flights, loss of pay due to lateness, extra child care fees and disrupted social commitments. In some cases follow on connections are not made adding many hours to journey times. Unlike a number of other jurisdictions, no compensation is offered to Citytrain passengers for the delays here in Queensland except under some circumstances for Airtrain (  https://www.airtrain.com.au/travel-info/service-information/airtrain-guarantee/ ).

Best wishes,

Robert Dow
