Gold Coast Bulletin --> Trains delayed after man crawls under train on Gold Coast line

QuoteTrains along the Gold Coast track are delayed by at least half an hour after a man reportedly sat on the train tracks before crawling underneath.

TRAINS along the Gold Coast track are delayed by at least half an hour after a man reportedly sat on the train tracks before crawling underneath.

It's understood the man first sat on the tracks outside Helensvale Station shortly before 6.30pm, before crawling underneath a southbound train.

The driver was forced to cut the power.

Police sent dogs to the man in an effort to get him away from the train.

One witness told the Bulletin the southbound commuter train was "stopped just a few hundred metres short of the station with passengers unable to disembark."

Passengers were finally able to disembark just after 7pm after police arrested the man.

The customer base north of Nambour is becoming disillusioned. Many simply drive to Nambour to catch the train, because they know there is greater reliability and more frequent services. How will someone waiting for a train at Cooran today, for example, know that a replacement bus is coming?

Will the QR replacement bus from Gympie North bypass Traveston, Cooran and Pomona?

Is it no wonder that people who want to make appointments in Brisbane use services like this:
https://activetransfers.com.au/transfers

The University of the Sunshine Coast knows that public transport for its students travelling to and from Gympie is poor and offers its own bus service.
https://www.usc.edu.au/explore/usc-locations/transport-and-parking/usc-express-shuttle

What the locals are saying on Facebook:

Manda Keane: I try to use the train for training in Brisbane but the times make it a bit awkward and often mean I need to go the day before and pay for accommodation. Then coming home the train has often broken down or been delayed and I get home quite late.

Peta Hempsall:  Manda Keane definitely! I have been using the Woombye Station lately just because of the lack of suitable trains at Pomona at the time I need them.

Jenny Ryland Shuttle trains are a must for our part of the world. I drive to Nambour to get the Bris train.

Rachel Bridger: I would definitely use shuttle trains!

It is clear that Queensland Rail are unable to provide a proper rail service north of Nambour due to problems with the trains, ATP requirements, crew and so forth.  Time to consider ceasing the rail services for the time being, and replace with rail bus, with at least 5 services each way every day (i.e. 7 days a week) to connect with rail services at Nambour.  Rail services to and from Nambour <> Brisbane need to be stepped up to the one hour frequency out of peak they were promised by the clowns in Big Willy in 2016.

The operator should then focus on coming up with a proper rail shuttle plan to replace the rail buses.

There is little point in persevering with the hit and miss arrangements in place at present, it is an abomination.

Honestly, until a reliable ATP-equipped set can be rostered for Gympie North services, I think QR needs to bite the bullet and roster three crew. Will it cost money? Yes, but the alternative is to destroy what little confidence the travelling public still have in the service. Sure, supplement the existing two trains daily with rail-buses, but I think eliminating the trains entirely is not a good idea.

Bus services Nambour-Gympie North should operate on a TEMPORARY BASIS only and ONLY with an iron-clad guarantee from QR as to when a train solution acceptable to the railway town communities will come into effect.  Not one without the other.

Gympie North are also restricted on what type of rollingstock they can use.

Outside of the ATP-equipped ICE, the IMU100/120s are the only non-ATP units permitted north of Nambour on revenue services (although with the 3-crew requirement north of Nambour). If there is no ICE or 100/120 class IMUs (and/or the 3rd crew member) available to operate the Gympie North, there's pretty much no choice but to cancel north of Nambour.

A 160 class IMU (if available) could operate in the Gympie North slot, but in most cases are generally truncated to Nambour (again due to ATP requirements) with buses replacing beyond.

NGRs won't be operating north of Nambour for the foreseeable future due to numerous reasons (which include not being trained, nor being fitted for ATP).

Rgds,
Arnz
