My bus couldn't get through due to the boom gate fault at Kuraby, so my wife ended up dropping me at work after doing the school run.

The overhead lines have been damaged near Redbank and as a result the line is closed at Darra-Ipswich. Also one of the rails has been damaged between so Ipswich/Richlands/City trains will be using different platforms/lines than usual to and after Roma Street on the Ipswich line..

Had to switch trains at Roma Street and then wait 40 mins on a Cleveland train. Moving now.

I was in hospital this afternoon for a day procedure.  Nice sunny day on the way in, out for a few hours and when I came too the entire network it seemed out of action due to heavy rain and electrical issues.  On leaving the Mater in a DVA vehicle we literally hit a wall of water falling from the sky which stopped us.  Eventually travelled along Fairfield road and onto the Ipswich Highway and back to Darra.  Traffic was surprisingly light although a lot of shallow surface road flooding.

Not surprised many problems on rail and bus at the moment.

Radar has the rain fading away soon.  These heavy rainfall events used to be relatively common in the 1960s and 70s.

Storm brings transport chaos to Brisbane

QuoteStorm brings transport chaos to Brisbane
Staff reporters
February 21, 2011 - 7:58PM

Flash flooding is causing transport chaos in Brisbane this evening with train and bus services experiencing cancellations and lengthy delays.

The Valley Station has been closed due to localised flooding leading to extensive problems across the network.

Hundreds of commuters have been stranded with major timetable delays on the Airport, Beenleigh, Caboolture, Cleveland, Doomben, Ferny Grove, Gold Coast, Ipswich Rosewood, Shorncliffe and Sunshine Coast lines.

Numerous Brisbane CBD streets have also been affected, with heavy rain, strong winds and low visibility forcing motorists to drive slowly.

Water has been reported on the road on Brunswick and Alexandria streets in Fortitude Valley while a fallen tree has blocked Whittingham Street in Acacia Ridge.

Bus passengers are also experiencing difficulties with several services being diverted and delayed.

The flooding comes after damaging thunderstorms swept across southeast Queensland throughout the afternoon causing blackouts and transport delays.

About 28,000 homes and businesses in the region remain without power with more than 30,000 lightning strikes recorded across the region since 12pm.

The Bureau of Meteorology said at 6.44pm the immediate threat of thunderstorms had passed.

Darkness falls

Brisbane has been cloaked in darkness from about 3.30pm this afternoon after a number of storms cells arrived from the state's west.

About 70mm of rain was recorded in 30 minutes at Wacol, southwest of Brisbane.

Heavy rain has also been recorded at Mitchelton (71mm in one hour) and Enoggera Dam (75mm in one hour).

Lightning strikes

About 28,000 homes and business remain without power across southeast Queensland.

Energex crews have begun recovery work in some areas with more teams expected to get to affected areas after the storms have passed.

Residents have been urged to stay clear of fallen powerlines and report any damage to Energex by calling 13 19 62.

Fallen trees, roof damage

The State Emergency Service has received about 14 calls from residents asking for assistance, the majority with roof damage.

Some households have requested sandbags but an SES spokeswoman said there have been no reports of serious damage.

A number of trees and branches have been reportedly blown down in the heavy conditions.

Transport woes

TransLink warned of a large number of delays across the public transport network as a result of the storm, with some services cancelled or delayed due to severe weather.

Trains between Darra and Rosewood including Ipswich have been suspended due to an object falling on the powerlines at Redbank during this afternoon's storm.

TransLink says trains are currently terminating and starting at Darra station, with buses running for passengers between Darra and Rosewood.

Commuters have been told to expect delays of up to one hour.

There are also power outages at Goodna, Gailes, Graceville, Gaythorne, Corinda and Riverview railway stations, preventing commuters from touching their Go Cards.

Trains on the Ferny Grove line were this afternoon suspended between Gaythorne and Oxford Park due to flooding at the Michelton station and the Blackwood Street level crossing.

Services are now running again, but commuters should expect delays with only one track open.

"Trains are only running as far as Keperra station with buses running between Keperra and Ferny Grove stations," the public transport authority says.

Rail commuters have also been told to expect delays of up to 30 minutes between Narangba and Caboolture stations due to a track fault at Burpengary.

A track fault has also caused train service suspensions on the Ferny Grove line between Keperra and Ferny Grove, with buses running in place of trains between these two stations.

TransLink says minor delays may also be experienced due to a track buckle at Indooroopilly.

Westside Bus services in the Ipswich area are returning to normal after earlier delays, but some commuters may

Hot conditions

Brisbane endured a third consecutive day of scorching temperatures, with the mercury climbing to 34 degrees. The mercury reached 27 degrees by 7am today and hit 33 degrees by 11.20am.

The weekend's heat wave came with strong westerly winds from central Australia following a long dry spell.

The capital endured its hottest blast of summer in more than a year over the weekend, as temperatures topped 35.3 degrees yesterday.

The weekend was the hottest since 2008 when temperatures climbed to 33.5 degrees on December 6 and 7.

I was at Darra Station during the height of the storm at 6pm. Numerous Queensland Rail staff were present helping passengers to get on the rail replacement buses due to the situation at Redbank. There were hundreds of people waiting for the buses. Many were lining up on Platforms 2 and 3 due to the queues in the subway leading out to the bus stop on Manburgh Terrace.

Many of the Queensland Rail staff (and passengers mind you) were soaked but still kept a positive attitude. Announcements were frequent and definitely useful. Trains continued to arrive and terminate at Darra from the City and would turn into City-bound services and leave seamlessly. Richlands shuttles were still operating through Platform 2. A few minutes later, a surprise announcement was made that trains would be operating through to Ipswich and once again, the staff were most helpful in directing passengers over to Platform 1 where the train to Ipswich was leaving from.

Darra seemed to be the perfect place for this to all occur. I don't think Darra could've handled the volumes of people without its recent upgrade. A big congratulations to Queensland Rail staff for their professionalism in such trying circumstances.

The Caboolture-Shorncliffe lines are heavily delayed and are running limited services due to limited trains available on the line prior to the signal fault closing the network between Bowen Hills and Northgate and train crews that want to get off/can't start their shifts because of other network problems.

Buses replacing trains : Nambour-Cooroy stations

Trains are suspended between Nambour and Cooroy stations due to overhead power issues.

The 10.58am Roma Street-Cooroy train has terminated at Eumundi with passengers for Cooroy to be taken north by bus. Buses are also being arranged for passengers who were intending to catch the 1.48pm Cooroy-Roma Street train. Passengers for these trains should expect lengthy delays around one hour.

Buses will also be on standby for passengers travelling to stations between Nambour and Gympie North on the 5.40pm Roma Street-Gympie North train, however Queensland Rail is working to fix the problem before this train reaches Nambour.

Please check the website just after 5pm for the latest information.

I caught the 4.25pm Ferny Grove service from Central. It took something like an hour and 15 minutes to get to Ferny Grove. While waiting at Central they were annoucing that due to flash flooding, all trains were terminating at Gaythorne, but I had no other way home so boarded anyway, the gaurd on the service made mention of the fact that delays were expected and that he would keep us up to date (he was great). When we got to Gaythorne we were waiting for a little bit when the guard came on and said we were facing a red signal and was waiting on orders from control. A short time later he got back to us explaining that it had been fully cut at Mitchelton, but 1 platform was now open so it was being shared, and we just had to wait for the next inbound train to come through. After Mitchelton it was all good until we left Grovely when he announced that there had now been a track fault between Keperra and Ferny Grove meaning all trains would now be terminating at Keperra, and that buses were being organised. Waiting at the bus stop took some time as I think it had just happened, but once the bus got going it had to stick to the back streets as with the traffic on Samford Rd it would be all but impossible to pull out with out traffic lights (they used the ones near the Ferny Grove police station) but as it turns out part of the track fault meant the boom gates on Samford Rd were stuck down so all traffic was being diverted via Tramway and Arbor Streets. Once I got to Ferny Grove and to my car heading back wasn't so bad, but the traffic on Samford Rd was at a virtual standstill back to just past Upper Kedron Rd.

Still, a very good job by QR and when we got there this morning, the only sign that something had gone wrong yesterday was that the PIDs were not working.

what the hell is wrong with QR? Why do they stop trains at Darra instead of running them to Goodna?
I was on the first train to reach Darra.
They let an empty set run wrong road to Goodna after we arrived at Darra - they could have least taken passengers there.
QR only seemed interested in getting trains back to the city and couldn't care less about stranded passenegers between Darra and Ipswich.
Management needs a good kick up the bum - its about time they got people who know about trains rather than aircraft running the show
In the old days they would single line working.
Apparently they can't even get a diesel from Redbank to tow the defective set away.
When things like that happen, our fares should be refunded.
we are paying more money for a worst service.

Driving to work is looking much more attractive each day.

 >:( The Cleveland train has been late every day this week.  When the 7.19 morning express wasn't getting me to work on time, I started taking the all stations train - 7.13 from Ormiston.  I am still late.  It got in at 8.21 this morning.  Twice we had to wait for trains to cross over.  Plus the ridiculously slow speeds for the whole journey.  Please duplicate our rail so we can have a true express train.

Hmm.  That could be achievable.  Seems there is a crossover so that an outbound train can reach the inbound track approaching Goodna, which is also a busy station.

Would have been too simple, someone in Mayne control would have had to think and actually do something instead of just sitting there monitoring their VDU.
The level of expertise of many there as Train Controlers obviously leaves much to be desired.

Might I suggest contacting QR to get an answer to this one and then share it here.  Seems quite a reasonable question.

I have a feeling those crossovers are out of action at the moment due to the flood. Not 100% on that though. Even if they were usable, im not sure they would run the services to Goodna instead of Darra anyway...

The crossover at Goodna has shiny rails last week so it would be safe to assume it would have been avaliable for use.

Trains inbound on the Shorncliffe Line may be delayed up to 10 minutes due to a track fault at Banyo.

The fault is also causing the boom gates at St Vincents Road level crossing to remain down, which may restrict access to the station for some customers.

Was there something wrong with the track that runs through platform 5 at Central? They were announcing when I was there at 2 that all Ipswich line trains were leaving from platform 1, and the screens at Fortitude Valley were saying that platform 3 was closed, but trains were still running through their usual platforms when heading north.

The Mains through the City were closed for maintenance through the middle of the day today. You may have arrived just as the Down trains were using the normal paths again while the Up trains had not resumed normal running.

This happens quite often during the day on Weekdays.

Ahhhk. Yeah, I've noticed the closure of the mains/suburbans for maintenance during the day before. I've just never been through when they'd started one track up but not the other.
