Train disappears on Ipswich line

My feedback to Translink:
7 December: Why did the 11.42 Corinda - City train not appear, with no service update notice either website or SMS? Why did station staff give conflicting information about this service outage?
Combined with the fact that the 11.27 departed early, thus leaving me on the platform at 11.25, waiting half an hour this constitutes a significant breakdown of service when all passengers on this line are considered.
Lift your game, Translink!

ABC Radio have just announced that a Sydney bound XPT has derailed at 7am.  They didn't say where but implied it was at Roma St where passengers have alighted.

I heard it was on the Merivale Bridge.  That would explain the "signal fault" affecting the Cleveland and Beenleigh/Gold Coast lines.  (There was also an eRail update for the Beenleigh line.)

Interesting to note that they're saying "alternate transport operating between Roma Street and Moorooka" for the Gold Coast line.  You'd think they'd just run via Tennyson.

Could possibly be that they are with alternative transport (buses) operating the missing link, one has to remember that Translink has extreme difficulty dissimenating information of any sort at any time.

I believe they are, first stop outbound from Tennyson loop is Moorooka. So buses transfer passengers from Roma Street to Moorooka all stations(for the Beenleigh line) and vis versa with connections from Moorooka outbound..to Beenleigh/Gold Coast and connections to the city via Tennyson.

They're now saying that services will resume by 2am (i.e. first service tomorrow).

Heading over to the TransLink website, the status suggests that everything is fine:

But if you click into one of the affected lines (e.g. Beenleigh), it shows the service status update (buses replacing services due to a "signalling fault").

Have just passed through Central and Roma St.  Half an XPT is at platform 2 Roma St (one power unit and 4? cars).  The power unit is city end.

Assume the other power unit lead and first couple of carriages have derailed near south Merivale Bridge South Brisbane.

Beenleigh and Gold Coast trains running express Roma St to Moorooka via Tennyson, then resumption of normal patterns.

Cleveland trains running express Roma St to Dutton Park via Tennyson then onto the Cleveland branch.

Bus Roma St to Dutton Park.

A rail shuttle between Dutton Park and Moorooka.

Just travelled on an Ippy from Central to Oxley, on the subs.  Noted one down SMU on the main down inbound.

It is times like these that minties the Tennyson loop line shows its real utility ...

For what ever reason it appears the XPT went down the narrow gauge ..  :o

This could be due to any number of reasons.  A similar thing happened at Yeerongpilly a number of years ago but didn't involve the XPT but a loco if I recall correctly.

The points etc. on the dual gauge are quite complex.  I often gaze at the trackwork coming and leaving Roma St and it is most complicated.

Ooh! This is a new operating pattern!!!  ;)

Tennyson's value is in its ability to avert complete and total network failure of the rail system.
I can only hope that a Newstead-Bulimba-Cleveland heavy rail tunnel is looked at rather than the fancy metro
once CRR1 is completed.

Oh, so the problem was with the outbound XPT.  Good thing this wasn't a weekday!

A severe inconvenience for everyone, including the XPT pax.

I will be using a XPT heading back to Brisbane 9th Jan. Scheduled to be using the train that derailed today(NT32). Surely everything will be fine by then.

The ICEs, usually only reliable about 50% of the time (if that).  Out of all the services that are scheduled as ICEs, Only services that is pretty much guaranteed a ICE (that even moves reliably) is the Cooroy/Gympie North services.
Rgds,
Arnz

Unless stated otherwise, Opinions stated in my posts are those of my own view only.

Fares_Fair

yes, I agree Arnz.

Whilst they are very comfortable for us long haul commuters, their reliability is somewhat chequered.
I understand that they cost too much to maintain and I suspect they may be gone forever by end of June 2011.

The new rollingstock is nowhere near as comfortable and really are meant for shorter suburban distances IMHO.

I am off to Melbourne early January for a few days.  Hope to squeeze in a trip on Vline.  It is not rocket science is it?  Long haul runs need a higher quality of comfort and features for longer travel.  The ICE sets are basically comfortable, but the mechanics seems to be problematical.  Some VLocity sets could be the go.  I am sure they can be built for 3' 6" gauge.

Wouldn't they be far too wide??  I presume you must be thinking of a narrower bodied version.

ozbob

yes, VLocity on a diet ..  the present generation SMU/IMU are related kin ...

While the comfort of the ICE trains are good, Victoria's VLocity trains are excellent -- and they rattle along at 160 km/hr for much of the journey; to a regular timetable.  Sheer bliss.  Happy travels Ozbob.

Trains suspended from Bowen Hills - Mitchelton
Train services on the Ferny Grove line are currently suspended between Bowen Hills and Mitchelton, due to a mechanical fault in the boomgate at Wilston Road in Newmarket.

Delays of up to 30 minutes can be expected in both directions.

As soon as the FG line reopened this evening, there was a signal failure at Alderley.
