If the Airtrain is out of your budget, here's a cheaper (but quite longer) alternative.

(Example journey for Mon-Fri)

Train
0538 Oxley (Zone 3) ->
0543 Sherwood (Zone 3)

Bus #598
0602 Sherwood Rd at Hedges St (Zone 3) ->
0734 Nudgee Rd East-West Arterial Rd near Nudgee Rd (Zone 2/3)

Bus #308
0747 Nudgee Rd East-West Arterial Rd near Nudgee Rd (Zone 2/3) ->
0752 Airport Factory Outlet (Zone 3)

Free courtesy bus
0815 DFO ->
0825 BNE International Terminal

There are only two transfers in this journey so a stopover (up to 60 minutes) could be inserted as another transfer somewhere in there.

If my understanding is correct, the GO Card fare for this journey would be for Zone 3 only - $1.92.

(Edit: The #598 bus passes through zone 4 (see Otto's post below), so the total cost would be $2.32)

Definitely would be scenic and cheap if you got a flight leaving between 10am-12pm from the International terminal  ;D:o

Domestic pax on the other hand, still has to cop the airtrain and/or taxi from International terminal

Or indeed:

any service to Toombul (rail, bus or car) > 308 from Toombul to DFO > Free airport connector from DFO to International Terminal

How does the deal go with free trips on the airtrain between terminals for holders of Qantas tickets? Do they check whether you have an international-domestic connection or would you just be able to show your domestic ticket at the international terminal and you are allowed to proceed.

Sorry to be a party pooper, But the 598 trip is 2 Zones.. ( Zone 4 from QE2 hospital to Garden City )
But you could get the 125 from Salisbury to Garden City to remain in zone 3..  ;)

Thank you for the clarification.

Here's a sample itinerary using the 125 bus to stay in zone 3.

Bus #598
0635 Sherwood Rd at Hedges St (Zone 3) ->
0645 Salisbury Railway Station (Zone 3)

Bus #125
0651 Salisbury Railway Station (Zone 3) ->
0722 Garden City (Zone 3/4)

Bus #598
0748 Garden City (Zone 3/4) ->
0849 Toombul Interchange 'E' (Zone 2/3)

Bus #308
0905 Toombul Interchange 'B' (Zone 2/3)
0913 Airport Factory Outlet (Zone 3)

Free courtesy bus
0920 DFO ->
0930 BNE International Terminal

This involves three transfers, so there's not enough free transfers left to start from Oxley etc (maybe if you took train via Tennyson to Salisbury station to join the 125 bus, but the GO Card would probably charge that through zones 1 and 2).

Alternatively, the original itinerary for $2.32 instead of $1.92.  The extra 40c would be charged on disembarking at Nudgee Rd because the #598 travelled through zone 4.

(Checking closely, the reason Garden City to Enogerra via bus #598 seems to be that the route doesn't enter zone 2 - it only straddles the zone 2/3 border around Toombul - Eagle Farm)

You need to show both boarding passes:

QuoteFor passengers travelling on connecting Virgin flights (meaning both domestic and international travel on Virgin flights) or connecting Qantas flights, a transfer between terminals is provided at No Charge to you. It must involve flights on the same carrier to/from each terminal. You will need to show us your airline boarding passes when you arrive at either teminal.

There can be problems, for example, if one of the boarding passes is retained by customs (when arriving into international terminal having flown domestic):
