Multi-Modal Transport Corridor displays open to the public

Public displays for the new Sunshine Coast Multi-Modal Transport Corridor (MMTC), outlining a concept plan for future transport on the Sunshine Coast, opened today in Kawana.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the MMTC extended from Caloundra Road north to the Sunshine Motorway and could accommodate road, rail, bus, cycle and pedestrian traffic.

"The MMTC will provide congestion relief and improve safety on the busy Nicklin Way, which is the current link from Caloundra to Maroochydore," Mr Pitt said.

"The corridor will also provide more public transport options as well as improve accessibility across the coast for work, education, shopping, leisure, tourism and the planned Sunshine Coast University Hospital."

Main Roads North Coast Regional Director Dennis Tennant said Main Roads worked closely with other government departments for a consistent approach to planning and delivery of this infrastructure.

"Studies conducted over the past decade have shaped the MMTC planning and there has also been a strong focus on sustainability including the environment and impacts of climate change," Mr Tennant said.

"The first stage of the MMTC, the $75 million Caloundra-Mooloolaba Road from Caloundra Road to Creekside Boulevard, is under construction and expected to be completed in early 2009."

The MMTC display includes a concept video of the proposed infrastructure, various maps of the location and touch screen terminals to enable the community to see how they might get to and from various locations in the future.

Mr Tennant encouraged the public to visit the display and provide any feedback they may have about the project to staff.

The MMTC display is located at Lake Kawana Community Centre and is open until Friday 14 November 2008. From 17 to 21 November 2008, another display will be set up at the Main Roads' project office at 131 Sugar Road, Maroochydore.

Members of the public can also visit similar MMTC displays at Currimundi Marketplace, Sunshine Plaza, Home Central Kawana, and Kawana Shoppingworld.
