SPEED cameras, radar guns, tailgaters and senselessly changing speed limits -- Calder Freeway regulars are used to them all. But not trams.

There were startled looks aplenty yesterday when a manky old, graffitied W-Class rattler was seen belting along the Calder towards Bendigo.

Travelling far faster than she ever did on rails, W-class number 785, still proudly bearing its "Toorak-Glenferrie Rd" destination sign, was making good speed on the back of a low loader.

Her rate of progress belied her 70 years, and got interesting reactions from slower vehicles as drivers looked in their mirrors and saw a ridgy-didge Melbourne tram from old route No. 8 bearing down.

The old girl was en-route to the Bendigo Tramways workshop.

There she'll be pampered, primped and preened before taking pride of place in the Bendigo tram museum.
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...
