It comes as the government prepares to trial a new payment system on train services in the coming months – allowing commuters to ditch the go card, and tap on and off with credit or debit cards instead.

The Courier-Mail can reveal that in the two years to June 30 last year, a massive $11.1m in funds from dormant go cards was returned to the state government.

The money, which was sitting on about 1.13 million go cards, can still be claimed back by commuters at any time – as long as the card is registered or the commuter still has the card.

A go card becomes dormant after it has not been used for five years, with the state able to recoup any remaining money on the card to spend on public transport services on the TransLink network.  ...
