I have received a suggestion for improving Gympie bus services.

Just for your information.  The suggestions have been forwarded to the appropriate authorities.

=====

29th August 2020

Attached is an idea for upgrading local bus services around Gympie we have used the existing 2 low floor bus fleet (Polleys Coaches) to operate this new service. This also means that these Low floor buses will not be able to carry out school routes as they currently do. Therefore we propose that 2 (possibly second hand) school bus vehicles be purchased to relieve the Low floors from the school route duties.

Attached files include; driver rosters, timetables and route maps.

New services now operate every 2 hours over 5 local routes and cover mostly the same area with some extensions. Route operating hours are designed to operate before and after normal office ours of 8am to 5pm. This will give more people an opportunity to catch the bus to work.

The new network will be focused around Gympie Central and with that, there is a need to have at least a toilet facility at Perseverance St with a dedicated bus layover from the pedestrian crossing to Excelsior Rd.

Care has been given to make sure new routes make the most effective use of existing bus stops to prevent council infrastructure waste.

Route 1

    One terminus point. Gympie Central.
Serving Two Mile, Gympie Private Hospital, Gympie CBD.
Dual direction service with loop at Ridgeview Dr.
Service loops at Ridgeview Dr anti-clockwise.

Route 2

    One terminus point: Gympie Central.
This service does NOT service Gympie CBD.
Serving Monkland, Gympie Historical Muesum, Bunnings Gympie.
    Dual direction service with loops.
Service loops at Hall Rd anticlockwise.
Service loops at McVey Rd anticlockwise. (this loop is carried out on return from Hall Rd).

Route 3

Two terminus points: Gympie Central and Gympie North Station.
    Serving Veteran, Gympie North Station.
    Service runs dual direction.

Route 4

    One terminus point: Gympie Central.
Serving Mary Valley Rattler, Gympie Aquatic Recreational Centre.
Dual direction service with loop at Rifle Range Rd
Service loops at Rifle Range Rd clockwise.

Route 7

    One terminus point: Gympie Central.
Serving Southside, Gympie Racecourse, Gympie Showgrounds, Gympie Hospital.
    Dual direction service.
Service loops at Power Rd clockwise.
Service loops at McPhail St clockwise.

Route 50

    Unchanged.

Too many loops for my liking in this proposal, but it's a good starting point.

I didn't realise how bad the bus services were in Gympie. 3x services a day, every 90 minutes at best, almost no services after 3pm (except Route 50), you almost wonder why you'd bother. Can't be getting much patronage on those services. Really an extra school bus or two wouldn't go astray in exchange for being able to provide something like a half-reasonable coverage service.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?
