Howdy,

Was thinking of heading out to Cleveland on Saturday 21st December.  No planned track closures that day.

Cleveland line is quite topical at the present.

Roma St - depart 9.50am.  Manly 10.30am.  Have a look around Manly station.

Manly 11.00am Cleveland 11.20am.  Short stroll to the local hotel for luncheon.

If interested meet up at Roma St or on the way.  Will travel in the last carriage.

If enough interested I will reserve a table ..  :bg:

That's definitely on my to-do list! Just a pity the new LR won't be open yet.

I'd be down for the 21st, if that's an open invite! I've haven't done the Cleveland line yet so that would be cool :)

The present Cleveland station (37.3km)  is the third ' Cleveland Station '.  Its location is just a little bit north of the former Raby Bay station.

First Cleveland was at 38.6km, renamed West Cleveland ( subsequently renamed Cleveland Central), when the Cleveland Station was moved further out to 39.8km (second Cleveland station).  This was closed in 1960, as was Cleveland Central ( West Cleveland ).

In  1960 the line from Lota to Cleveland was closed. Lota to Thornside was reopened in 1982. The line was extended to the third Cleveland station (formerly Raby Bay) in 1987.  At the time the plan was to further extend the line to Redland Bay.

Some further closed stations: Doboy, Badgen ( between Birkdale and Wellington Point), Barinia (between Ormiston and Raby Bay [now Cleveland])

This is at the second Cleveland station, a photograph by my grand father P G Dow c. 1954

Forgot to mention, the new Victoria Point Bus Station opened on Monday. It's called 'Victoria Point Central'. It's a 16 minute bus journey on the 250 from Cleveland Station. Victoria Pt Tavern is next to it.
If the train arrives on time, you have 4 minutes to find the bus. If you use a walker, you won't make it.  :fp:

Yo Otto.

Rail/bus connections at Cleveland are constantly mentioned in dispatches.

There is not enough time left for transfers.  TransLink is well aware of the problems, they seem unable to do anything about it.

Going to be a priority for 2020, getting something done to sort these constant failures.

T'was a great day out on the Cleveland line. Good to catch up with TimH and SurfRail too.

Another year gone. BUT we will be back, don't you worry about that!

Sounds like a nice outing - unfortunately couldn't make it due to other commitments & the general busyness of the season!

Merry Christmas Bob! :lo :lo :lo
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

Thanks, and to you James. I don't get to Cleveland too often but it is an interesting line.

Pressure is building to do something about the single section, and perhaps a third platform at Manly.  I wanted to get a good set of photographs of Manly in particular.  On the present alignment the two train stabling would have to be sacrificed I think for another platform.  Stabling for a more significant number of trains could be done further out, eg. Thornside.
