Heading down to Melbourne for early January for a week or so.

Won't make too many plans until I see what closures will be happening for works etc.  They are doing a lot down south.

I hope trains are running to Gippsland.  Be nice to visit Bairnsdale.

Still to do Bairnsdale by train, I went out early this year but it ended up being coaches.

I am hoping that they will have a break over the Christmas / New year period from the Metro works etc.   Just might be able to squeeze a trip to Bairnsdale in this time.

I think VLine should look at options when inner closures. Start at either Dandenong or Pakenham.  The last time I was in Melbourne there were inner line closures and yet VLocities were doing runs on the Gippsland line either testing or training, although trains were replaced by coaches.

The number of closures on the Gippsland line is really annoying for the locals out east.  Even if the VLine replacement coaches are free travel.

From memory there is some spare stabling at Cranbourne.  And they can refuel and provision at Traralgon.

Gazza

My home town. The Cafes on Fryers St (Lemon Tree or Friars are better)  The Rissole Club is big, maybe just for a beer though because the food is the exact same standard pub menu.

Shepparton has an observation platform on the Phone Tower in the middle of town in the Maude St Mall.

I guess the other main thing to see is Victoria Park Lake, which has been done up in recent years. It's about 700m from Shepparton Station.

On the other side of the tracks to the station is the SPC factory sales, if you feel like lugging back a 12 pack of dented peach cans.

ozbob

^ thanks Gazza.  I didn't know you hail from Shep !  Nice part of Victoria.  I used to have some friends at Kyabram.

So Shepparton, Colac and Wangaratta are still on.

I stay at Murrumbeena which is not far from East Malvern on the Glen Waverley line.  Saves putting up with the buses between Caulfield/Westall and FSS.

Very serious bush fire situations north east (Alpine) Victoria, and eastern Gippsland.  Southern NSW also grave situation.

Weather and fire situation for planned trip to Ararat today (The Overland and Vline) looks OK.  Might be an issue with planned trip to Shepparton on the 8th.  Colac on the 6th should be OK.

Decided not to proceed with planned trip to Shepparton on Wednesday.

Hot weather is forecast. Will probably have a look at some of the recent LX removals around Melbourne instead.
