^ your blaming everything for the recession level retail figures but missing out on the single thing that matters the most....
People simply don't have the money laying around to spend anymore...

The lower and increasingly middle class are getting broker and broker, savings are diminishing as they opt to pile any actual savings that they have accumulated from their stagnating wage into their overpriced property to try and secure themselves a roof over their head when they retire.

There is no way in buggery this 'false dumbed down' economy can save its retail sector from further misery if it keeps on stuffing in record levels of imported human capital who now take up a sizeable portion of the low skilled workforce...of which job opportunities diminish by the day with increasing automation..

A conservative estimate puts it at 30% of low skilled jobs to be automated by the end of the next decade (2030)....drones && robotics...

But hey.....who cares.....lets just keep stuffing more people in and sit their simultaneously scratching thy head as to why people aren't coming up with money to spend in the shops due to low skilled earnings further diluting
..
Australia is cooking up a surefire recipe to destroy anything that even remotely resembles a local retail sector.....tourism will chug along but retail outside of xmas/new years is pretty much toast unless a genuine effort is made to friggin grow wages.
Supermarkets will be forging ahead with Scan and Go and Drone deliveries in some instances. So the checkout job will certainly die away as well as some delivery jobs.

Couriermail Quest---> Green light for Strathpine shopping centre revamp

Quote
A much-needed overhaul of an ageing shopping centre north of Brisbane will begin early next year, the latest in a series of significant investments into the region.

WORK on a much-needed overhaul to a major shopping centre north of Brisbane will begin early next year after getting the green light from council.

The Strathpine Centre has announced that its application to introduce a new casual dining precinct had been approved.

RELATED:

● The Strathpine Centre is set for a modern overhaul of its entertainment precinct

● Strathpine Centre renovations still not approved, three months after being lodged

A statement from the centre, owned by investment group Swordfish Australian Sub TC, stated that work would start on the new area early next year.

It was due to finish towards the end of 2020.

The announcement coincides with the completion of the $75 million Retail Super Group headquarters across the road, that will house about 650 staff members.

The planning report for the Strathpine Centre revamp stated multi-million investment was a result of a recent revitalisation of Strathpine and surrounding suburbs, naming the Petrie university campus and new RSG office complex as examples.

"As the next wave of investment occurs within the Strathpine area, there is a need to ensure that the retail offer remains competitive to tenants, attractive to patrons and consistent with the offer of other higher-order centres within the region," the report states.

"There is significant opportunity within the Strathpine area for redevelopment as economic investment continues to grow in the Moreton Bay Region."

In June, The Strathpine Center applied to create a new modern entertainment and leisure precinct in part of the complex.

The new area will open out to the car park at the north eastern side of the shopping centre and features a Casual Dining and Entertainment Precinct on the ground floor and an upgraded cinema.

The new area also featured a tavern on the ground floor and a child care centre on the roof.

The centre hoped the project would be the first step in its long-term aspirations for "a comprehensive redevelopment of the land".

It also aimed to provide the region with a retail and entertainment offering "consistent with other higher-order shopping centres in South East Queensland."

The work was expected to be done over three stages.

Similar concept to other centres like Mount Ommaney, and Upstairs at Toombul. Great for local residents to get out once in while to dine at affordable prices in a casual modern atmosphere.

Referring to Strathpine and the Strathpine SC: It does have a train station, but a bus service the runs along the local streets that connects with the centre and station may decrease unnecessary car trips?

There's already a number of bus routes serving the centre, most of which connect with trains as well (not necessarily at Strathpine).  The big problem is span of hours; most finish around 6 pm weekdays, 5 pm Saturdays & 4 pm Sundays. Utterly useless if you want to go out for dinner.

Christmasretailaustralia.net.au----> All stores at Westfield Carindale, Westfield Chermside and Westfield Garden City will all be open for extended trade on Black Friday through to 9pm.

QuoteWestfield centres going big for Black Friday

NOVEMBER 25, 2019

Black Friday Watch continues at the National Retail Association. The ever increasing popularity of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday events has changed the landscape of Christmas shopping, luring Aussie consumers out to the stores earlier than ever to nab discounts on big ticket items.

While it's a bonanza weekend for online sales, with over $1 billion projected to be spent online over the four-day period, it is no longer a strictly online event. Brick-and-mortar stores are increasingly seeing the value of the physical presence and engaging customers through in-store offers, activations and more.

Scentre Group Regional Brand Experience Manager QLD, Kirstie Foord said this year Westfield is expecting many more retailers to participate in Black Friday:

"Black Friday is retail event customers across Queensland have told us they want to be a part of. Marking the start of the festive season, customers want to shop-instore and share the Black Friday experience with their friends and family. There is a very real and exciting opportunity for retailers to engage with customers and benefit from this customer interest and increased customer foot traffic.

"Westfield Carindale, Westfield Chermside and Westfield Garden City will all be open for extended trade on Black Friday through to 9pm to provide shoppers with more opportunity to take advantage of retailer offers." Ms Foord said.

"Nationally, Westfield is communicating on radio and digital platforms the extended trade hours for this day. To compliment this, each Centre has additional planned activity".

In light of the new extended trading hours for Black Friday in Adelaide, South Australia, Westfield Marion will stay open until midnight, while Tea Tree Plaza and West Lakes in Adelaide will push back their Friday trading hours to 9pm.

Westfield Chermside specifically, is offering a number of special offers and experiences this Black Friday for customers to enjoy, including:

Shoppers receive a $20 Westfield gift card if they spend $200 between 6pm and 9pm (while stocks last);

Westfield stylists on hand to assist customers with tracking down their perfect fashion finds, or finding gifts for the notoriously hard family members;

Red Bull DJ Truck and Wings team in the Centre;

Promotional staff handing out Black Friday survival kits; and

A live DJ between 6pm to 9pm outside Sephora.

With even more activities purported to be locked down, this Black Friday Westfield is all about attracting the whole family to the centre from 6pm to shop like crazy. Add-value events like DJs and entertainment are exceptional ways to keep consumers in the store for longer, and has the potential to increase the amount of dollars spent in store.

Black Friday takes place on Friday, 29 November 2019. Sales continue through the weekend to Cyber Monday on Monday, 1 December 2019.

The National Retail Association will continue to monitor and report on Black Friday activities as part of our commitment as the voice of modern retail in Australia. As Australia's most diverse retail industry association, the NRA can offer insights on behalf of all sizes and types of retailers in all states and territories.

The refurbished face of the ASrndal; e Shopping Centre.

A NEW owners of a shopping centre south of Brisbane have launched a $15 million refurbishment of the property.

Consolidated Properties Group and CVS Lane Capital Partners have kicked off the upgrade

just weeks after the October acquisition of the Arndale Shopping Centre in Springwood for $35.5 million.

Hutchinson Builders, which are working on the makeover, will unveil the new look centre ahead of Christmas 2020.

Arndale, which has 11,000sq m of retail space, including 35 specialty stores anchored by Coles supermarket, will undergo a comprehensive aesthetic upgrade to improve the amenity.

This will include an upgrade to the four mall entries, a revitalisation of the existing facade, and upgrades to the internal mall and existing services within the centre.

Consolidated Properties Group chief executive Don O'Rorke said there has been "no time wasted" in getting started on the upgrade, which is expected to yield new national and independent retailers for the 45-year-old shopping precinct.

"We're continuing our march in southeast Queensland and along the Eastern seaboard, identifying retail centres like Arndale which are ready for immediate improvement," he said.

"We are completing similar redevelopment programs at Wilsonton Shopping Centre in Toowoomba and Pavilions Palm Beach on the Gold Coast, which are both nearing the finish line and have already seen an uplift in both tenancy performance and consumer traffic.

"Like our other centres, the improvements made to Arndale will result in new jobs, with about 200 positions to be created during construction and a substantial increase in ongoing employment opportunities to be generated."

CVS Lane Capital Partners chief executive Lee Centra said Arndale Shopping Centre, which fronts the Pacific Motorway, has been a strong performing centre over many years, but its full potential will be realised following the whole-of-centre upgrade.

"We have learnt the performance of these neighbourhood centres can be attributed to three key factors — accessibility, convenience and variety. We'll be making improvements in all of these areas," he said.

"Arndale is already in a highly accessible location, minutes from the motorway and the enhancement of the mall entries will provide shoppers with greater visibility and a much better experience.

"Convenience and variety go hand-in-hand – people now want all of their shopping needs under one roof, and while Arndale has a great mix of tenants, we will be aiming to increase the variety of stores and services on offer by enticing new retailers as part of this renovation program."

CONSTRUCTION will start next month on the next retail phase of a multimillion-dollar urban renewal project that will create a "dynamic food and entertainment precinct" including a Hoyts cinema complex in the Fortitude Train Station precinct.

The $50 million refurbishment of the Valley Metro's original food court and recent mall extension will attract some of Australia's top brands to more 30 tenancies.

Tick for Valley Metro towers

$28m Valley makeover begins

The retail component of LaSalle Investment Management and Partners Group's Valley Metro redevelopment will be finished by early 2021 and stretch from the Brunswick St side of the station to the car park at the rear and the ground floor lobby of the extensively refurbished Transport House facing Alden St.

LaSalle's senior vice president of development Simon Juniper said as well as Hoyts there will be a new Woolworths and convenience and dining outlets while a number of current tenants — including Terry White Chemist and My Health — will be relocated to refurbished space.

He said thousands of commuters would have already seen the recently completed phase one retail at the car park entrance which also includes a new parents' room and refurbished amenities.

Mr Juniper said the next phase will focus on the Brunswick St side of Valley Metro.

"What we have at the moment is a space which I think is very stark and lifeless," he said.

"We recently finished phase one retail at rear towards the car park and we've created a warm inviting atmosphere which we will also create at the Brunswick St entrance.

"With the Hoyts cinema there it will become a seven-day-a-week dynamic food and entertainment precinct and a welcome springboard to Brisbane's biggest entertainment area, the Valley, for the people who work there by day and play there by night."

Mr Juniper said work would also upgrade the Brunswick St facade of the station entrance with double height canopy entrance will provide a heightened presence.

The $500 million Valley Metro redevelopment, which included two apartment towers in the master plan, kicked off in 2018 with the back-to-concrete refurbishment of the nine-storey Transport House which now has floor-to-ceiling glass facade.

Completed earlier this year, tenants have committed to one level and speculative office suites have been built on another level of the 9000sq m building which has end-of-trip facilities and a 4.5 star NABERS commitment agreement.

"Where we once had a 1970s block at Valley Metro, this building now represents the fresh contemporary face of the Valley," Mr Juniper said.

"It is light and bright and built for ongoing environmental efficiency and sustainability."

Both Valley Metro and the Fortitude Valley station are at the centre of the urban renewal area with an additional 642 apartments are currently under construction across three developments, and another 3733 units in 16 projects proposed.

I am hoping that a new station entrance will be created with ticket gates. You could create a new entrance/exit where the glass wall is facing the current Foodworks. This can be for Go, Credit and Debit cards only. This will prevent overcrowding at the current gates and spread the crowds out a bit.

Its also weird that they are using QR branding on the Valley Metro artists impresissions when Translink branding was the go now.

The current inside of the Valley Metro is fine enough - setting aside the fact the food court does feel a bit empty at night and on weekends, it is reasonably functional and pleasant enough.

The problem isn't the Valley Metro itself, it is the immediate surroundings. Step out on to Brunswick Street though and you're still faced with the local homeless sleeping on benches and drunk people who look ready to start fights. Hopefully this redevelopment stimulates some more foot traffic and gets the area cleaned up a bit more.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

I beg to differ. It was getting a bit dated. I reckon the new fit-out and what will be on offer is much better and reflects the community expectations in reference to modern retail trends and convenience.

I don't want to "clean up" the valley *too* much though. I'm very scared of it becoming so gentrified local music venues can no longer afford to be there :/

Brisbanetimes.com.au---> Coles flags shop and walk out (checkout free) stores

QuoteCustomers will just walk out': Coles exec flags 'checkout-free stores' within 10 years
Dominic Powell

A leading executive at Coles says Australian supermarkets could be checkout-free in 10 years as innovation in retail technology and an increasing focus on costs quickly make the traditional purchasing experience redundant.

The $20 billion ASX-listed retail giant's head of commercial and express, Greg Davis, told The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald that customers would later this decade be able to shop and leave the supermarket without going through a checkout.

The checkout could soon be a thing of the past, according to one of Coles' senior executives.

"I have no doubt in the next 10 years, customers will be able to take the product off the shelf, put it in their basket, walk out and have it all paid for," Mr Davis said.

Coles is aiming to use technology to strip $1 billion from its cost base by 2023 through an initiative it has dubbed "Smarter Selling". It is also battling fierce rival Woolworths and insurgents such as Aldi for a greater share of the $100 billion-a-year grocery market.

The technology facilitating checkout-free shopping has already been trialled in the United States by retail behemoth Amazon, which runs a number of checkout-free Go stores across the country.

In Amazon's Go stores, artificial intelligence, numerous sensors and data are used to detect what customers pick up and put in their bags. The company then charges the customer's Amazon account after they leave the store.

It is this "almost seamless" shopping experience that Mr Davis is predicting for Coles' stores over the next decade after the success of self-serve checkouts and online shopping in Australia.

Mr Davis said they were an indication of how fast technology had changed the retail sector, noting in 2009 just 60 of Coles' 800 stores had self-serve systems.

"Now almost all of our stores have them and 50 per cent of our customers use them when checking out. It's the biggest visible change at Coles in the last decade," he said.

Woolworths has begun tests on a similar checkout-free concept, called Scan&Go, where customers use their mobile phones to scan each item as they shop, and pay digitally before they leave the store.

Coles has already taken strides to fully automate its distribution, working with international specialists Witron and Ocado to build robotic warehouses.

As part of its technology push, Coles will also look to invest further in advanced analytics and artificial intelligence to create "tailor-made" product ranges for each store around the country.

The retailer has inked deals with digital services provider Accenture, Microsoft's Azure cloud platform, and software systems company SAP to help with these projects.

I have no doubt in the next 10 years, customers will be able to take the product off the shelf, put it in their basket, walk out and have it all paid for.

Coles' chief executive of commercial and express Greg Davis
"This will significantly improve our forecasting and therefore improve our availability so we can have exactly the right range in the right stores," Mr Davis said.

In the past financial year, Coles reported an 8.3 per cent drop in earnings excluding significant items. Chief executive Steven Cain said at the time he would be "disappointed" if the company didn't return to profit growth by the 2021 financial year..

Increasing competition from Woolworths, along with new market entrants such as Kaufland and Aldi, has led Mr Cain to label the next five years as the "most competitive period in Coles' history". However, Mr Davis remained unfazed.

"I'm not concerned with the competition at all, I actually find it quite healthy," he said.

"It keeps us on our toes."

Bummer that they are going. There would of been stores at Richlands, Burleigh Morayfield and Toowoomba. I was always sceptical of the move to introduce another hypermarket style supermarket into Australia. Swartz is better to rollout Lidl stores which are smaller format. The stores are more local neighbourhood friendly. They can utilise retail space under apartments and offices catering for urban dwellers. Better coverage in urban areas as well.
