I see what you're saying but good luck encouraging people to walk or ride up to Bardon Central. It's at the top of a pretty high ridge and the whole area is extremely hilly. Add the narrow streets and lack of space to widen footpaths or add bike lanes and you don't really have a very active transit orientated area.

They will need to somehow sort out the traffic issues through this area first. It can be an absolute nightmare to get through there at the best of times. I would assume the pedestrian lights would have to be removed and the new Coles carpark entrance would be signalised (with a link up to the carpark on the southern side).
They could well do or just prevent right turns. There is a roundabout a bit further up in both directions

Where's the roundabout to the north or west?
I thought there was one West of the site but there is one East at Jubilee Tce. Traffic lights would be the best option if vehicles need to go left and right onto Macgregor Tce from the proposed site.

Gold Coast Bulletin---> Costco: First look at new Gold Coast complex at major shopping centre

QuoteCostco: First look at new Gold Coast complex at major shopping centre
Warehouse retailer Costco will open its first Gold Coast store at one of the city's biggest shopping meccas. This is what they've got planned.

WAREHOUSE retailer Costco has unveiled plans to build its first Gold Coast store at one of the city's biggest shopping meccas.

Costco filed a development application with the Gold Coast City Council on Friday to build a warehouse on a 13,620sq m site at Westfield's Coomera Town Centre.

The retail giant, which already has one outlet in north Brisbane and another in Ipswich, has entered an agreement with Scentre Group and Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC) to start construction of a warehouse and petrol station complex in early 2021.

Costco managing director Patrick Noone said the rapidly growing northern Gold Coast was the "perfect location" for a new store.

"We are delighted to secure this site in the Gold Coast and continue our growth in the state," he said.

"This will be our third Costco warehouse in Queensland, and fourteenth in Australia.

"We have had our eye on this region for some time and in that period we have seen the exciting and dynamic growth that has taken place.

"We think we have found the perfect location within Coomera Town Centre and we now look forward to obtaining our approvals and then commencing construction and getting open to the community as soon as possible thereafter."

The project is expected to create 330 full-time and part-time positions through both the construction period and once it opens.

It will come with a 750-bay car park.

Scentre Group development director Stewart White said securing Costco was a coup for Coomera and would shore up the city's north as a major retail hub.

"The arrival of a sought-after international retail brand such as Costco recognises the long-term growth and potential of the region and builds on our vision for the Westfield Coomera Town Centre as an unrivalled destination in retail, dining, lifestyle and entertainment for the thriving northern Gold Coast population," he said.

"Costco is the next step in our ongoing development of the Westfield Coomera Town Centre and with planned future development on adjoining land, we're looking forward to bringing a new level of convenience, services and experiences to our Gold Cost customers."

The first stage of Coomera Town Centre opened in 2018.

Westfield has previously unveiled plans for stage two, which would see the shopping centre dramatically expanded, but have not indicated when the project would move forward.

The Coles in Bellbowrie is likely to close when this one opens. The other good thing about this development is that it will include a Koala reserve sanctuary (natural habitat) at the back of of the development when completed. A great feature I reckon as there were never Koalas there before.

Couriermail.com.au--->More alfresco dining, 24-hour shopping could save Brisbane CBD: National Retail Association

QuoteMore alfresco dining, 24-hour shopping and a pedestrianised link between Roma Street Parkland and the Botanic Gardens are just some of the big ideas that could revive Brisbane's CBD.

Brisbane business leaders are pushing for confusing and "outdated" trading laws to be relaxed to allow the city to become a 24-hours city to turbocharge the economy.

The National Retailers association has called for relaxed trading hours and extended alfresco dining opportunities to be investigated as part of a suite of measures aimed at boosting struggling shopping strips in Brisbane's inner city.

It comes as Sydney embraces a "24-hour city" as part of a COVID-19 recovery plan of its own.

NRA deputy chief executive Lindsay Carroll said businesses were bound by "outdated and confusing trading laws" which dictated limited operating hours and mandatory public holidays.

"Times have changed since bygone eras where most of the population worked a standard 9am to 5pm job Monday to Friday," she said.

"A more flexible, consistent and streamlined set of trading hours laws will help retailers navigate the difficult terrain ahead and provide them with a greater chance of surviving Australia's first recession since 1991.

"It's not necessarily recommending to government what types of stores should be able to stay open later and for how long. It's more about providing those individual businesses and their customers with choice."

Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland Economist Jack Baxter said the proposed change would be important for small businesses and employees in a time of economic recovery.

"I think small businesses would be really supportive of that change, we see that it happens overseas," he said.

"Now more than ever it's going to be very important for small businesses, and not only businesses but the people they employ.

"Especially before Christmas as well, you've got Christmas trading hours and online retail as well."

Ms Carroll said the opening of South Bank, Eagle Street Pier and Howard Smith Wharves had turned the inner city into an attractive destination.

"If parts of the CBD undergo a transformation that makes it easier for pedestrians to visit then you would expect that to entice more shoppers," she said.

"Increasing foot traffic within any precinct will lead to a boost in consumer spending."

To give business some relief, Brisbane City Council has waived footpath dining fees until December 31.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said council was committed to the CBD's post-pandemic recovery.

"We have big, bold plans to ensure the Brisbane of tomorrow is stronger and more resilient as we continue to pull through the current economic crisis," he said.

"We encourage the State Government to listen to traders and respond accordingly when it comes to the powers they have, such as business trading hours."

verbatim9

This definitely makes sense to allow retailers the freedom to open reflecting consumer demand and retail initiatives... Commentary also suggests to allow licenced convenience stores and supermarkets to sell a selection of beer wine and spirits, inline with other States and Territories in Australia. There also suggestion to provide extended hours to Public Transport. I think NightLink should run all weekend on long weekends, to include the Sunday night running into a Monday Public holiday, as there would be demand. As time progresses there should demand for a 7 day NightLink service on key routes to cater for the 24 hour economy.

The proposed changes that will allow further pedestrianisation of Albert Street will further enhance the prospect of a late night retail and hospitality economy in the CBD. Other areas such as Woolloongabba and other hubs/precincts around the State could also benefit from unrestricted retail trading.

To support a thriving CBD you also need to allow for further apartment developments in the CBD and surrounding inner suburbs, preferably mixed use developments.

verbatim9

The Asian supermarket wars are heating up in the CBD with Genki joining the highly competitive market of Asian foods at 123 Charlotte Street, just two doors down from Davely's Asian Supermarket. Genki will also be licenced for those who like Sake and Asian style beers and RTDs.

Queen's Wharf's luxury shopping to be the envy of the nation

10th February 2021

JOINT STATEMENT

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning
The Honourable Dr Steven Miles

Treasurer and Minister for Investment
The Honourable Cameron Dick

The $3.6 billion Queen's Wharf Brisbane will be the envy of the nation with confirmation today it will become one of the world's finest luxury shopping precincts.

Destination Brisbane Consortium (DBC) announced it has secured a deal with retail giant DFS which boasts a portfolio of 750 of the world's most sought-after brands.

Deputy Premier and State Development Minister Steven Miles visited the site this morning which is on track to open from late 2022.

"The $3.6 billion Queen's Wharf Brisbane development is supporting thousands of construction jobs," Mr Miles said.

"This is another milestone in the world-class development that will transform Brisbane's CBD, boost tourism and create thousands more jobs when complete.

"The development will feature 50 bars, cafes and restaurants, a casino, four world-class hotels, up to 2,000 residential apartments, the Sky Deck, moonlight cinema, the Neville Bonner Bridge and now around 6,000m2 of luxury retail floorspace.

"The historic Printery Building on George Street will transform to deliver a shopping haven introducing more than 100 prestigious brands.

"Where other parts of the world have slowed these types of projects, construction has continued on Queen's Wharf throughout the COVID-19 pandemic."

Treasurer and Minister for Investment Cameron Dick said the deal was significant milestone for DBC in the development of its $3.6 billion integrated resort development.

"The presence of a retail name like DFS will enhance Brisbane's allure for international and national luxury-brand shoppers," the Treasurer said.

"The big names of New York, Paris and Milan will be available right here, which is a great win for Queensland.

"In a post-COVID world, this resort and casino will be a drawcard for an estimated an additional 1.4 million international, interstate and local annual visitors."

"Once Queens Wharf is up and running, it will provide jobs for more than 8,000 Queenslanders at one of Australia's most sought-after destinations.

"The construction workers on this massive project also deserve congratulations for their ability to keep the project going right through the impacts of COVID."

Member for McConnel Grace Grace said she was looking forward to the staged opening from late-2022.

"This retail precinct will add a layer of luxury to our CBD," Minister Grace said.

"It will mean international and national luxury-brand shoppers will be heading to Brisbane and taking advantage of all our wonderful city has to offer.

"What's more, the retail and hospitality jobs that go with this development will boost employment opportunities for locals."

The Star Entertainment Group's CEO Matt Bekier said the ground-breaking deal would further underpin Queen's Wharf as Australia's future international tourism and leisure hotspot.

"The hallmark of a world-class integrated resort is its diversity and quality of offerings," eh said.

"Queen's Wharf will have a rich collection of attractions – including the DFS luxury retail precinct – to keep locals, interstate and international visitors coming back time and time again."

DFS - part of the Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH) Group - will create its largest shopping footprint in Oceania at Queen's Wharf.

In total, DFS will create around 6,000m2 of luxury retail floorspace – part of nearly 40,000m2 of retail, food and beverage and entertainment floorspace to be delivered across the Queen's Wharf precinct.

DFS' suite of luxury brands and stores will become fully operational as part of a staged opening of Queen's Wharf from late-2022.

Couriermail.com.au---> The card up Bunnings' sleeve for key inner Brisbane site

QuoteThe card up Bunnings' sleeve for key inner Brisbane site
Plans are in motion for a bigger, better Bunnings in a key central Brisbane spot.

Kara Sonter
February 12, 2021 - 3:22PM

Plans for a bigger, better Bunnings at an inner-city location are still on the horizon with the hardware giant seeking new approvals for their plans.

Bunnings was yesterday given approval by Brisbane City Council for a time extension to a previous development application for their Indooroopilly store on Coonan St.

Plans were originally approved back in 2017 for the development but work to extend the store had not started.

According to the application made by RPS Group on behalf of Bunnings, "timing for construction of the approved extension to the store is dependent upon a variety of factors, including commercial considerations and customer demand".

The works would see the store extended towards Allwood St, expanding the warehouse floor space over three levels to include a nursery, bagged goods area, and building materials and landscaping yard.

Bunnings will now have until July 2023 to complete the works under the current approvals.

As discussed previously there is an opportunity to incorporate a new mega Bunnings along with other retail and a new relocated Indooroopilly station and bus interchange.

Benefits - Market led redevelopment of the station and retail precinct. - new and improved bus interchange that could be integrated with a future mass transit corridor from UQ. - Level straight platforms for improved access. - Segregated two way bike path integrated into the new overpass / bus interchange with the station.

The Walter Taylor Bridge is getting duplicated so it makes sense to relocate the train station north to Bunnings.
