As someone who uses the bikeways and footpaths they are rather annoying, way too much bad behaviour with people just dumping them wherever they feel like it.

I used a Lime/Neuron/Beam a few times (not recently) but they're really not cheap.

I wonder what sort of data those companies collect and share with data brokers? Their privacy policies seem to indicate they do.

I still miss the CityCycles.

Get rid of the things, I was at Southbank recently and the no helmet brigade outnumbered the helmeted, these things should never have gained a foothold.
There needs to be a rack where they are locked to get your deposit back and to charge them up, it could even be solar powered.
It's a shame they seem to attract the less intelligent of our society.

The Australian --> Brisbane follows Auckland in cancelling contract of Singapore-based e-scooter company Beam Mobility over alleged scam $

QuoteBrisbane has become the first Australian city to cancel the scooter licence of global e-vehicle company Beam Mobility amid a widening scandal over the tech firm's alleged scam cheating local governments out of revenue and subverting safety caps.

The Singapore-based company is under investigation for secretly putting "phantom" scooters on streets across Australia and New Zealand in excess of contracted caps on the number of licensed e-vehicles allowed in each city.

The Brisbane City Council will now refer Beam to the corporate watchdog, and possibly police, after an internal audit found it had deployed an average of 500 extra scooters every day into the city, about 27 per cent over its cap of 1800, during a 12-month period to July. ...

Sounds like Beam have been very naughty! I did always feel like there were more of the purple units around than either the Neurons or the Limes.

ABC News --> Brisbane cancels Beam contract as e-scooter company accused of misleading councils

QuoteBrisbane City Council has cancelled its contract with e-scooter company Beam after a tip from a whistleblower suggested it had "significantly" under-reported the size of its fleet.

The council will refer the Singapore firm to Australia's corporate watchdog and potentially police, alleging the company owes $330,000 in unpaid fees and exceeded safety caps by nearly a third in the 12 months to July — an average of 500 undeclared devices a day.

Council's investigation found the company had "systematically" exceeded its scooter cap.

Brisbane City Council transport chair Ryan Murphy said several Australian councils had been tipped off about the data anomalies. ...

Subsidy of $200 for eScooters and eBikes to help people transition to less polluting transport modes. - Brisbane Times

Brisbanetimes --> Labor ushers in taxpayer-funded rebates for electric scooters, bikes $

QuoteThe Queensland government will introduce a rebate for e-scooters and e-bikes to encourage commuters to become less reliant on cars and reduce carbon emissions.

After its electric vehicle rebate scheme closed earlier this month, the government has set aside $1 million for the new e-mobility scheme, offering $200 towards the purchase of new e-scooters and $500 for e-bikes.

A spokesman for the Department of Transport and Main Roads said the zero emission vehicle strategy, which previously provided electric vehicle rebates of up to $6000, was "driving" changes in commuter habits.

"The safe and proper use of these devices provides an affordable and more sustainable mode of transport, while encouraging people to be active in their everyday lives," he said of e-scooters and e-bikes. ...

Government Statement

https://statements.qld.gov.au/statements/101528

Miles Government helps you pay less to pedal further

The Queensland Government has doubled the available funding for the newly launched E-Mobility Rebate Scheme due to a resounding uptake, with a further $1 million investment.

Over 860 applications were submitted in the first three days of Scheme – which began on Monday 23 September 2024 - showing the community is backing the Government's commitment to encouraging the use of e-bicycles and e-scooters.

The new rebates for the purchase of e-bicycles and e-scooters were introduced to encourage Queenslanders to chose more active and sustainable modes of transport, while helping reduce cost of living pressures.

Rebate funding of up to $500 per eligible e-bicycle and $200 per eligible e-scooter is available to successful scheme applicants.

The safe and proper use of these devices provides an affordable and more sustainable mode of transport, while encouraging people to be active in their everyday lives.

The new rebate scheme supports the Miles Labor Government's priority of further reducing emissions and working to meet interim targets on the path to net zero by 2050.

It will also put money back in the pockets of Queenslanders – building on nation leading cost of living relief delivered under Premier Steven Miles.

Applicants for the scheme have already indicated that the main reasons for purchasing an e-mobility device is to replace car trips, increase fitness, being cost-effective and being good for the environment.

The rebate applies to:

. E-scooters that are propelled by an electric motor that is not capable of operating when the device is going faster than 25km/h

. Power assisted bicycles fitted with one or more electric auxiliary motor/s with a maximum power output, or combined maximum power output of not more than 200 watts

. Electrically power-assisted cycles (EPAC) with a maximum continuous rated power of 250 watt.

Already, 50 cent fares have proven to be a winner with record amounts of people jumping on board. For those that don't catch public transport, the Miles Labor Government has taken 20 per cent off rego for all light vehicles, regardless of use.

If elected in October, Premier Steven Miles has also committed to bringing down petrol prices by encouraging more independents in the market, limiting the cost and frequency of price rises and open state-owned petrol stations.

Queensland's Zero Emission Vehicle Strategy 2022-2032 is driving the state's commitment to reducing emissions and providing positive outcomes for the environment.

The scheme includes detailed guidelines and connects applicants to important information about safe e-device riding and charging practices, to help ensure the safety of riders, pedestrians, and other transport network users.

Over the past few years, the Government has significantly reformed e-scooter rules across the state.

These rules are now nation-leading and – when combined with significant penalties and police enforcement – send a clear message to riders that unsafe and antisocial behaviors will not be tolerated.

Since major road rule changes were made in November 2022, the Queensland Police Service has issued more than 6,000 infringements to riders doing the wrong thing.

While there are no immediate plans for further personal mobility device rule changes, the Department of Transport and Main Roads is currently conducting an evaluation to understand the success of past reforms, and whether future changes may be required.

All information on eligible devices and how to apply can be found at https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/projects/electricvehicles/zero-emission-strategy

Brisbanetimes --> Beam selling off scooters after contract axed over alleged fraud

QuoteBeam appears to be selling off its Brisbane scooters as it prepares to exit the city over alleged fraud.

The e-mobility company's app this week began notifying users about refurbished second-hand vehicles on sale for $399.99. A seat can be added for $30.

The scooters are speed limited to 25 kilometres per hour and have an estimated range of about 40 kilometres.

Purchases can be picked up from a Beam warehouse on Bank Street in West End. A $200 state government rebate is not applicable as the vehicles are not "new". ...

Ipswich e-scooter trial extended for six months
18 December 2023

QuoteE-scooters will stay on the streets of Springfield Central for another six months to allow Ipswich City Council to collect more data on micro-mobility in the region.

Growth, Infrastructure and Waste Committee Chair Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said e-scooters had been enthusiastically adopted by Springfield Central residents during the initial six-month trial period from 1 July 2023.

"More than 3,000 users have scooted across the trial to date, demonstrating how quickly e-scooters have been adopted by Springfield Central residents," Mayor Harding said.

"Scooter users have clocked up 30,000 kilometres in the year to date. These data points alone demonstrate the impact micro-mobility can have on how we get around our suburbs, completing the 'last mile' to and from public transport hubs, work and study.

"Council has decided to extend the trial to 1 July 2024, to collect additional data that will help us evaluate the long-term viability of e-scooters in Ipswich."

Overall - positive results, with complaints <1% of trips during the trial. Generally, it seems to be used as a feeder mode to university and train stations.
