Brisbanetimes --> What will Brisbane's transport look like in 25 years?

QuoteCar-free days, bikeways for electronic bikes and delivery of freight by drones could be operating in Brisbane within two years, according to the Transport Plan for Brisbane.

Brisbane lord mayor Graham Quirk would deliver the finalised Transport Plan for Brisbane – Strategic Directions to the council on Tuesday to be endorsed.

In the plan, the council identified 14 key initiatives to introduce within two years to kick-start the plan's implementation.

The Transport Plan considers 25 years into the future.

Within the 14 initiatives were plans to increase the walkability of Brisbane by developing and implementing targeted car-free days in certain locations.

In France, Paris city centre has a car-free Sunday each month which keeps cars away and allows pedestrians to walk the streets.

Electric bikes and scooters were also considered within the two-year vision with the council committing to monitoring the emerging trends as well as incorporating provision for small electric vehicles in the planning and design of the bikeway and shared path network.

The council also identified urban freight as involving a variety of vehicle types and sizes required to meet delivery timelines set by business and the community.

As part of the scope of the initiative, the council committed to developing targeted plans for urban freight for centres and large business as well as assisting in facilitating trials for drone deliveries.

In the medium-term, some key initiatives identified by the council included street revitalisation trials, onboard audio and visual messages on bus services as well as lobbying the Queensland Government to improve pedestrian links from the CBD and Roma Street to Suncorp Stadium and the new Cross River Rail station directly to the Gabba across Main Street at Woolloongabba.

Lord mayor Graham Quirk said Brisbane's future was exciting.

"This plan proactively addresses emerging challenges, opportunities and strategic directions to meet the needs of Brisbane residents, industry, commuters and visitors now and into the future as our city continues to grow," he said.

Opposition councillor Jared Cassidy said the transport plan was just words and no actions.

"Brisbane needs a plan that sets concrete goals that can be measured against a delivery timeframe," he said.

"Instead all Brisbane gets from the LNP is 170 pages of waffle."

The new plan replaces the council's last transport plan, which was released in 2008.

The draft plan was released in December 2017.

During the community consultation on the draft plan, more than 3000 submissions were received.

^^I like the sound of the ability to hire an electric bike. It will entice more people on bikes just for the novelty as well as to cycle around with less effort during warm summer days.

Transport Plan

Brisbane City Council's Transport Plan for Brisbane - Strategic Directions has been developed to guide the evolution of Brisbane's transport network over the next 25 years and beyond. It provides a framework to ensure our city stays connected, liveable and prosperous into the future.

As Brisbane continues to grow and evolve, we need to take a more innovative and visionary approach to transport planning.

The transport plan sets out how transport will contribute to achieving our vision for our city, supporting economic, social and environmental outcomes for current and future generations.

It also identifies opportunities to partner with private industry and other levels of government, so we can deliver smart and sustainable solutions for Brisbane residents, visitors and commuters.
