OK, the pax numbers are not huge out west, but this does give some hope for the future this turnaround.

There is a return to rail so some of this increase is rail feeder based (eg. 522, 524). The Ippy ' buz' 515 is working too.

Makes the case for better frequency, span and coverage more cogent.

Bus bouncing back in the Western Region

Good Morning,

There are some bright spots in the sea of darkness with respect to the patronage decline on bus in SEQ.

For example there has been a remarkable turnaround in the Western Region: Ipswich and Springfield. Principal operator Bus Queensland (Westside).

A 8% patronage loss in FY 16/17  has been turned around to a gain of 10% in FY 17/18.  The bus routes that are primarily feeders to rail, 522, 524, and 526 all had good patronage growth.  All Western bus routes had an increase, the opposite of the previous year.  This is encouraging and reflects the new fare structure having an impact over a full year (was introduced December 2016) and the fact that population is increasing in the area, particularly Springfield and Redbank Plains and  people are getting back on the bus and rail due to the chronic road congestion issues. More needs to be done for the Western bus network, particularly better feeder bus arrangements, route timing adjustments for traffic effects, better hours of operation (span) and some frequency increases.  But this turnaround is good news and gives hope for the future.

Best wishes,
Robert

ozbob, what are your thoughts on the western end of the 500? It basically duplicates the rail line. Would this route be more useful if it ran only between Dinmore and Goodna at double the frequency?

No, probably not.  Although the 500 bus does duplicate the rail line in parts it is an important local coverage route.  As you can see has a reasonable pax load as well.  The only part where it is reasonably close to the rail line is between Dinmore and EbbwVale.  Brisbane Road is actually a reasonable walk from the railway line Bundamba to Ipswich. I often walk from Booval rail station to Brisbane Road and it is a good walk. Also a lot of walk up pax on the other (southern) side of Brisbane Road. Between Dinmore and Goodna it does a good coverage run as you have noted.
