MALCOLM Turnbull won the skirmish but not the battle to save his leadership.

The expectation is of another vote on who leads the Liberal Party as Peter Dutton — now likely to be unharnessed from his obligations as a minister — broadens his appeal to colleagues.

Mr Turnbull sprung a leadership vote to quell the talk of an uprising, which could have seen him caught by surprise.

He won 48-35, which means about 42 per cent of Liberal MPs didn't want him as Prime Minister.

And he added to the ranks of Liberal critics.

That will be made obvious during Question Time as Labor points to the former home affairs minister sitting on the backbench, close to the former prime minister Tony Abbott.

There was no Abbott-Dutton campaign against the Turnbull leadership and they might not be frontbench partners should a new prime minister be elected.

But Mr Abbott's non-stop agitation against Mr Turnbull fed the Dutton momentum. The former prime minister pushed the iceberg closer and closer to HMAS Turnbull until jittery backbenchers started leaping overboard. And Mr Dutton was the nearest lifeboat.

Mr Turnbull has to reshuffle his ministry and be prepared for an even bigger wave of unrest should he not replace Queenslander Peter Dutton with another from that state.

The unrest north of the Tweed is a significant factor in the leadership instability.

In this process, Mr Turnbull will weigh the loyalty of some existing ministers. The 35 votes for Mr Dutton would have included not a few frontbenchers.

And the Prime Minister would also be calculating his options of an early election — despite spending most of the year insisting he would not go to voters until early 2019.

But he has to assure colleagues he has principles as well as policies, having just ditched his National Energy Guarantee in the face of Liberal and National dissent.

And the entire government should pay heed to the response of voters.

The spectacle as seen outside Parliament House is of a bunch of stumblebums on at least $200,000 a year who can't manage themselves and can't stop talking about themselves.

Many will be looking at candidates beyond the major parties. Even the chaotic One Nation will look good as a protest vote.

And Mr Dutton can be expected to spotlight his profile for voters who see him just as the stop-the-boats minister.

An Australia Institute survey earlier this year found his voter recognition was on the rise and hit 57 per cent, compared to 54 per cent for Treasurer Scott Morrison. It as a solid outcome for him, but nowhere near 79 per cent rating of Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, who was unopposed as deputy Liberal today.

Mr Dutton's reputation as a tough immigration minister has attracted the applause of a significant action of the national electorate and those unhappy with him would be unlikely to back him in any circumstances.

I think it will be very difficult for the blue team to recover from here for probably two, possibly three electoral cycles.  This might be good for Cross River Rail funding! 

It is being touted by some today that Dutton is actually a stalking horse for the return of Abbott.  Time will tell ...

Both sides are so so so out of there minds and the greens well I don't really know as I have not had a greens candidate to have a look at them but some of there statements I have read and people they have put forward in a seat well they seem very nutty to me

Turnbull has said he will call a spill meeting if Dutton gets 43 signatures on a petition.  Apparently they have 40 but more will not sign as the voting for leader is meant to be a secret ballot and some do not want to be on a public list.

There may not be a spill meeting at this rate.  I don't know how this will be received as now Bishop, Morrison and Dutton are all saying they are challengers.  Turnbull's cabinet is now non existent essentially.  They cancelled parliament (Reps) today was such the mess.  I think there is an outside chance if Turnbull will not call a meeting of possible Governor General intervention, but before that the whip might call the meeting regardless of Turnbull. There is no precedent for 43 signatures etc.  All that has ever been before is two to 20.

Turnbull is making sure he really buggers up the liberal party throwing a few grenades on the way out ...

Brisbane City Council is seeking an urgent meeting with Indian technology company HCL, which provides IT services to the council, amid allegations of wage theft.

The Services Union secretary Neil Henderson said the council outsourced its IT functions to HCL in 2013, a move that cost 55 jobs within the council, but that saw savings of about $8 million over five years.

Mr Henderson said it had now emerged the Indian workers brought to Australia by HCL had been working extraordinary hours, including no weekend or public holidays rates or overtime, equating to thousands of unpaid hours.

"Every aspect of HCL's operations for the BCC has been based on the exploitation of these employees, who have been held over a barrel due to their reliance on special visas," Mr Henderson said.

"From our investigations, these employees have been threatened to be deported and replaced by other Indian workers keen enough to get to Australia to accept the low pay and long hours."

There is a reason we have a rise in anti-immigration sentiment...its one liners like 'aussie workers are just bigoted if they blame migrants for taking thier jobs' that give fuel to it.

All three ministers in the powerful Home Affairs portfolio have now offered the PM their resignation.

Peter Dutton - home affairs

Alan Tudge - citizenship and multiculturalism

Angus Taylor - cybersecurity and law enforcement

Add in the head of employment Michaela cash and you have a LOT of bad press coming out of those portfolios lately....eg: worker exploitation,cyber hacks,foreign interference.....perhaps turnbull wasn't listening to their concerns....who knows...

And if Dutton does get in today...it will no doubt be 'changed man' tony abbots support that also got him there....and tony abbots two core policies have been immigration and withdrawal from the paris accord....both core policies of the party that threatens to steal more votes away from them at the next fed election....PHON.

Libs will be rolling the dice today....they will have either 90% carbon copies of turnbull or a toned down less brash version of Donald trump.

If I was the PM I would offer a Cabinet Portfolio to Tony Abbott.  He does have experience and expertise in certain areas that would be useful to the new Government.  It would also keep him somewhat occupied and I think less likely to be a disruption to ' good government '.
