I think Skybus realise that they need to diversify their business model given their main business operation - buses from the Melbourne CBD to Melbourne Airport has a finite date on it.

^ I think SkyBus will be continuing with a MEL service but I expect the Southern Cross <> MEL will be greatly reduced if and when airport rail takes off, hence the new routes and new states of recent times I agree.

Great to see a full time bus service to Hobart Airport to the city. The timetable is very good as well.

The Examiner --> SkyBus launches in Hobart with eyes on Launceston

QuoteSkyBus is hoping it will eventually be able to expand its new airport shuttle service to Launceston.

Premier Will Hodgman launched Skybus' foray into Tasmania on Sunday with a service starting between Hobart Airport and several city destinations.

SkyBus Co-chief executive  Michael Sewards said SkyBus was already a well-known brand in Tasmania, with 22 per cent of domestic passengers in Melbourne coming from the state.

"We would hope to expand into Launceston over time," Mr Sewards said.

"As we learn more about the market and as passengers accept our service here we'd love to be in Launceston one day.

"SkyBus currently transports four million people every year from Tullamarine and Avalon with growth averaging 10 per cent every year."

SkyBus has been operating for 40 years and this is its fourth new service in the past two months in Australia and New Zealand.

Mr Sewards said SkyBus had received excellent support from tourism and government authorities in its bid to gain a Tasmanian foothold.

Mr Hodgman said Tasmania's tourism industry was thriving and the government welcomed a new airport shuttle service that would provide an important service for visitors.

"SkyBus is well known for its high quality, high frequency airport services – many Tasmanians will have experienced the SkyBus in Melbourne, the Gold Coast or Auckland," Mr Hodgman said.

Mr Sewards said the Hobart service would be affordable and reliable and children would travel free.
