Yes, having an angled protection beam knocking the truck onto the bike lane upon impact is the thing that killed Les Karayan on Annerly Rd. The headline will probably be "freak accident" like last time.

The scourge of ' bridge strikes ' continues

Greetings,

The scourge of ' bridge strikes ' continues.

Yesterday a truck with a high load on the back impacted the bridge at Bridge Street Chelmer.  This meant trains were stopped, until the bridge was deemed safe for rail traffic.

Later in the afternoon, in well publicised incident a truck impacted into one of the protection beams on Annerley Road Dutton Park which protect the rail over road bridge nearby.

The protection beams for that bridge were installed as the result of a fatal bridge strike in August 2013.

Protection beams save the bridge of course (and consequent rail service disruption) however is still a very serious offence when struck, there are very serious potential risks to bystanders and vehicle operator and vehicle passengers if any,  and of course causes generalised road chaos.  The beams are designed to help minimise topple risks and in this case vehicle has remained upright.

In April 2016 RAIL Back On Track set up a Bridge Watch Web site in an effort to highlight this issue. See > https://railbotforum.org/bsw/index.html

The number of bridge strikes that has occurred since April is concerning.

There have been 33 bridge strikes since the 3rd April 2016 that we are aware of. These disrupt the rail service and cause road chaos.

There are enough issues with our transport networks to have to also contend with this constant scourge of bridge strikes.

Please consider highlighting this issue and the need for all road vehicle operators to be constantly aware of the heights of their vehicles and loads, and to practise safe route planning but also remember to remain vigilant for all height warning signs.

Couriermail Quest --> Public transport activist calls for tougher penalties on bridge strikes

PUBLIC transport advocate Robert Dow is calling on the State Government to suspend the licence of any truck driver who strikes a bridge.

The demand comes after trains were stopped and traffic disrupted at two bridge strike incidents at Chelmer and Milton last week.

On Wednesday, a truck carrying an excavator hit the rail bridge at Bridge St, Chelmer.

Less than 24 hours later a driver misjudged the height of his vehicle and got stuck under the rail bridge at Cribb St, Milton.

Services were immediately suspended, between Corinda and Roma Street stations.

A Queensland Rail spokeswoman said the incidents served as important reminders for drivers of over-height vehicles to be vigilant around rail bridges and know their height.

"Queensland Rail is committed to reducing the likelihood and impact of bridge strikes through engineering solutions and working with police on enforcement, but the reality is that every low clearance bridge is fitted with a height clearance sign and it's up to motorists to simply take care and be aware of their vehicle's height and load," she said.

Mr Dow, a spokesman for Rail Back on Track, said relying on driver vigilance was not good enough.

He counted 34 bridge strikes in greater Brisbane since April.

"Clearly, the present system of drivers theoretically knowing the travelling height and width of their vehicle ... is not working.

"We need to step up education campaigns for drivers to understand their vehicles and enforce punishments if they get it wrong."

Motorists who damage Queensland Rail infrastructure, including rail bridges, can be fined up to $8800 and four demerit points, in addition to the repair costs.

Beams are good in the sense that it stops the actual bridges getting smacked, however real risks remain to bystanders and vehicle operators.  And of course disruption to the road networks.

COMMUTERS have been warned of delays on the roads and the rail network after a truck carrying a load of cotton reportedly collided with a rail bridge.

A member of the public reported the incident on Sherwood Rd, Rocklea to police after cotton spilled across the road about 8am.

Police have arrived on scene and diversions are in place.

The eastbound lane of Sherwood Rd will remain closed as emergency services remove the truck from under the rail crossing. ...

Honestly, how do people even manage to do it? Surely they are aware of the height of their vehicle. Is it that they forget the height or are unaware or the clearance? If so, this is where protection beams should be put in place (like the new ones in Goodna) at all bridges (road and rail) that are under a certain height (say 4m). This way, the vehicles will get stuck before the bridge, only delaying the road traffic rather than both road and rail.
