300 days of rail fail - train pain!

Good Morning,

Today marks 300 days since the onset of rail fail!  We still have confusing reduced service timetables Mondays to Thursdays, with a different timetable and even more service reductions on Fridays.  We will have no doubt more service cuts coming in the months to come.

The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games will result in even more service reductions on most lines to support increased frequency on the Gold Coast line.  This is a measure of how serious this rail fail really is.  The integrated public transport network for SEQ has been wrecked, put back decades.

Best wishes,
Robert

Gotta love Rail Fail. You know why?

Because it happens 365 days a year, even on CHRISTMAS DAY!!! :-t

Stillwater

Imagine if you were a visitor from interstate or overseas trying to work out Brisbane's rail timetable - different on Fridays from Mon.-Thurs. and Saturdays different from both those and also Sunday.  The 8am train you catch on Thursday does not show on a Friday!

Happy new year to all RBOT members!  I have only discovered this post and I think it is brilliant - a place I plan to post frequently on.  My first concern is that next week we return to the "Interim (one can only hope) Timetable" on the Cleveland Line.  Speaking on behalf of Redlands patrons, this is not a good thing for two reasons:  the 5:02 pm from Central will terminate at Manly and the 5:32 pm Central will not run on Fridays.  Cleveland patrons will now be re-relegated to the cattle car 5:17 pm all stations being the first train post-5pm out of the city and only two trains between 5 and 6pm on Fridays: 5:17 and 5:47 pm.

QR:  For the duration of the "Interim Timetable" can the 5:02 continue to Cleveland?  This will take a lot of pressure off the 5:17 and provide patrons who used the 5:09 "express" prior to the RailFail some relief both in crowd congestion and the extra half hour in the evenings after a long day.

ozbob

^ thank you!

We have been unrelenting in our advocacy for an improvement in PM peak for Cleveland. The reversion back to the 2017 railfail timetables from Monday (22nd January 2018) without addressing the PM peak on the Cleveland line is very disappointing.  We were hoping that would have been addressed at least, and a consistent Monday <> Friday timetable.  Very disappointing that the mediocrity rolls on sadly ..

In the "normal" timetable there is a Kuraby followed 7 mins later by a Beenleigh service around 5pm, I've frequently traveled on these and both tend to lightly loaded. Surely resources from one of these could be reallocated to help the Cleveland mess.

500 days. Imagine if a private train operator did this - would they have their service contract renewed again?

QuoteI'm just wondering what your logic is with the cutting of services on the Caboolture line. It's not even Comm games yet, and there is only one service every half hour in peak period, when last year there was a service every six minutes!! I am only at Petrie station going inbound, and the train is completely full with no standing space and a crowd of very overheated and uncomfortable commuters paying full fares (that you increased at the start of the year mind you).
7.35 - 7.59....not far off half an hour.....from Caboolture.....rrrriiight around school time...perfect  :fp: :fp:

It's getting to the point where pax should be given ' incentive payments ' to keep persevering 😣

Frankly an embarrassment.

If a passenger gets off the train in smart fashion, thereby reducing the dwell time at the station, does he/she get a small credit on their go card for having contributed to an efficiency gain for QR?  It makes just as much sense as paying train drivers to turn up for work.  Of course, the root cause is not enough drivers.  What is the net gain in new drivers since training was ramped up.  It was about 20, but could be up to 25.  But who knows when you have an agency that says it is 'open and transparent' about its operations, but isn't?

Stillwater

It's Friday folks - different timetable.

#Metro

New train operator please! I don't care if it's public or private, as long as it's not QR.

Latest from Mr Bailey:

"Queensland Rail has put an extra 69 drivers and 168 guards into supply since October 2016."

Is that 'extra' as in over and above normal levels or 'extra' staff numbers eaten into by those who retired, left or whatever?

Fridays!  Should be a joyous day looking forward to the weekend, but no!  Fridays are shocking on the Cleveland Line at 5:17pm.  Standing room only at Central!  Why?  Because the next train to Cleveland is 5:47 - 30 minutes later.  Wait, isn't there a 5:32?  Not on Fridays!  Why not?  Because we are all apparently out drinking or late-night shopping - NOT!!!!  There can be no legitimate reason for this train not running on Fridays. :conf

^^ Not enough crew yet bob! They have enough units but still not enough drivers.

After two years one would hope there would be enough crew in all seriousness.

I don't think the public is too impressed and nor should they be.

If they weren't losing so many to retirement (biggest loss atm), sackings, other roles or quitting they probably would have the numbers.

I've said it a few time but this really is the Newman Govts fault. It may have finally failed under Labor but the seeds were sown in 2012.

Campbell Newman being responsible for #RailFail does not suddenly give us back even one of the 330 services axed. The punters want action and an end to delays, cancellations and particularly the 'misery line'. We need action!
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

techblitz

lol newman wasn't even responsible....it was those below him that were...even then if you were to backtrack through the chain of command...his ministers were also kept in the dark.....im sorry but how the friggin hell do you fix a problem that you never knew existed in the first place??

The Strachan enquiry found no direct evidence that the newman efficiency cuts were fully to blame...they said it contributed partly but the majority of the problems were because of Queensland rail and pinpointed it to the toxicity and lack of communication within the organisation as well as its in-ability to properly 'risk manage'.

Just curious...what part does the BTBU play in RailFail?  Are they playing fair?  Or taking advantage?

I assume you mean the RTBU?  Being a union they will do what they can for their members.  The problem is the Govt and QR have been far to accommodating to some very generous EB agreements IMHO.  This is complicating recovery from #railfail.

Exactly, yes typo RTBU.  One pollie confided to me it was downright "extortion."  Unions are notoriously greedy IMHO notwithstanding issues raised regarding safety (eg attacks on bus drivers).  They are eating up the overtime being paid to its members instead of facilitating the training program.  Strachan was coy not to call them out (I admittedly did not read the entire 70+ page report page by page, but from what I read, that was my impression).

brissypete

Well given the unions opposition to external recruitment I would say they are certainly a factor in the continuing rail fail.

On a good note at least there is no summer holiday timetable this year.
