An impressive project indeed...let's remember though, two things. 1) The WA Govt [to their credit] runs lean...unlike Qld, which currently wastes a lot of tax dollars on a massively bloated public sector. 2) Something like 85% or thereabouts, of WA's entire population, resides in the greater Perth region...making the politics of major infrastructure very easy!
SEQ, where our only "fast-track" is in becoming the rail embarrassment of Australia!   :frs:

Yanchep Rail Extension

The Yanchep Rail Extension will deliver the last proposed section of the Joondalup Line from Butler, 14.5km north to Yanchep to help support ongoing growth in the area and reduce congestion, while supporting about 1,370 jobs.

The project will help develop activity centres by stimulating new employment opportunities in the Alkimos Secondary Centre, Eglinton District Centre and Yanchep Strategic Metropolitan Centre and supporting higher density land use for residential and commercial purposes.

The extension will give more than 150,000 future Yanchep-Two Rocks residents another transport option to travel around Perth.

With stations planned at Alkimos, Eglinton and Yanchep, early designs show how stations will fit within the planned development areas and cater for passengers on day one of operations.

ABC --> Armadale rail line to close for 18 months as part of major Metronet upgrade

QuoteThousands of Perth commuters will have their travel plans disrupted for about 18 months as the Armadale rail line is shut down for an upgrade and extension.

Key points:
The rail line closure is expected to begin next year
There are about 20,000 boardings on the service each weekday
Commuter input on replacement transport services is being sought

The 129-year-old train line to Perth's south-east will be transformed as part of the government's Metronet project.

There are about 20,000 boardings on the service every weekday.

About $2 billion of state and federal money will pay for the work, which includes elevating the rail line through Victoria Park and Cannington.

New stations will be built at Byford, Armadale, Carlisle, Oats Street, Queens Park and Cannington, while 12 level crossings are set to be removed.

The line will also be extended 8 kilometres to Byford. ....

ABC News --> Notorious Bayswater Bridge to be replaced as part of Metronet project

QuoteA Perth bridge that has developed a "cult following" after causing multiple truck crashes is set to be replaced by the end of the year.

Key points:
The works are part of the Bayswater train station upgrade
The new bridge will be taller to prevent truck crashes
Rising fuel prices could impact the cost of the project

The WA government is now asking for suggestions on how to farewell the 3.8-metre-high Bayswater bridge, which has caught many unsuspecting truck drivers off guard over the years.

The 100-year-old bridge, in Perth's eastern suburbs, has its own social media accounts and is the focus of a blog keeping track of every crash.

The community is encouraged to come up with ways to farewell the infamous Bayswater Bridge.

Rail Express --> Contract awarded for Midland makeover

QuoteThe Midland Junction Alliance has been awarded the $246.7 million contract to design and build the METRONET New Midland Station in Perth.

The Alliance – made up of McConnell Dowell Constructors, Georgiou Group, Arcadis Australia, and BG&E – will design and build the new three-platform station between Helena and Cale streets.

The contract also includes decommissioning and demolishing the existing 53-year-old station.

As well as the main station building, the project will include a 12-stand bus interchange, a new multi-storey car park with more than 600 parking bays, a north-south pedestrian overpass, passenger toilets, lifts, stairs, a kiosk and secure parking for 96 bicycles.

The station's new location brings it closer to the heart of the Midland Town Centre, improving accessibility between the station and important sites such as the Midland Health Centre and Midland Gate Shopping Centre. ...

The way Perth is going, they will probably drop the entire rail network to 10 minute frequency all day, being the first Australian city to meet metro train standard for the whole system (or at least most of it) and doing so in a low-population, low-density, high-car ownership city.

WA Metronet

More train lines to be put in highway medians - low density is no barrier because they use buses to feed rail.

WA Today --> Metronet is getting a you-beaut digital radio network. Why are we still spending money on analogue systems? $

QuoteThe West Australian government is purchasing hundreds of new analogue radios and extending their use to new Metronet rail lines despite the technology likely being redundant within just two years when a new digital network is switched on.

The Public Transport Authority last week released a tender calling for the design, construction and commissioning of an analogue radio system for security and train control covering 36 kilometres of the new Yanchep and Morley to Ellenbrook rail lines. The cost to taxpayers won't be known until the tender is awarded later this year. ...
