Comment: Everton Hills residents demand access to bus service

Greetings,

RAIL Back on Track sympathises with residents of Everton Hills about the lack of bus service in their local area.

Local residents are right - their bus services are not good enough by any standard. Bus services in greater Brisbane are very poor and have been so for many years. For example, Route 396. Just five buses are supplied in the morning peak, and five in the afternoon peak. Want to travel anytime after 8.00 am or before 4.00 pm? Or perhaps on a weekend? The bus service does not exist then.

One reason for the lack of service is administrative boundaries.

Although Brisbane City Council operates buses there, residents in the suburbs of Everton Hills, Arana Hills and Ferny Hills are not part of Brisbane City Council. Their rates are paid to Moreton Bay Regional Council. Brisbane City Council residents living at similar densities enjoy a higher level of bus service simply because Brisbane City Council subsidises bus services within the Brisbane City Council area. This allows more buses to be put on.

Residents in these three suburbs therefore miss out - unless Moreton Bay Regional Council also agrees to subsidise TransLink bus services there.

The second reason for a lack of service is wilful neglect of the Brisbane bus network in general. Bus services in Brisbane simply have not been comprehensively reviewed for perhaps well over a decade or more. RAIL Back on Track was a strong supporter of the 2013 bus review, but almost five years on little change has happened.

We invite residents of the three suburbs to compare the current Brisbane Transport bus service map with our New Bus Network Proposal.

Ferny Hills, Everton Hills and Arana Hills are a public transport black hole areas.

Generally, bus services appear only once an hour or only during the a.m. or p.m. peak. No wonder there is "no demand" - who these days wants to wait an entire hour before starting their journey? RAIL Back on Track's New Bus Network Proposal would double bus services in Everton Hills, Arana Hills and Ferny Hills.

Residents would benefit from two new 'CityConnector' cross-town bus services:

A 908 Mitchelton - Chermside - Nudgee bus service that would connect Mitchelton station, Brookside Shopping Centre and Chermside Shopping Centre. This bus would run on Queen's Road, South Pine Road, Camelia Ave and Pullen Rd in Everton Hills.

A 903 Mitchelton-Toombul bus service that would connect Ferny Grove station, Grovely Station, Mitchelton Station. Brookside Shopping Centre, Stafford City Shopping Centre, the Northern Busway at Kedron and Toombul Shopping Centre.

Both proposed bus services would operate every half hour between 7 am - 7pm, including weekends. Services would be funded by removing waste and inefficient network design in the current Brisbane bus network.

RAIL Back on Track calls on Deputy Premier Jackie Trad and Lord Mayor Graham Quirk to again revisit the issue of fundamentally restructuring the Brisbane Bus network so that bus services are aligned to the changed and larger city that Brisbane has become.

Best wishes,
Robert
