Media Release
Premier and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk

New Queensland Auditor-General appointed

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk today announced that Mr Brendan Worrall has been appointed as the Queensland Auditor-General, following a national search and merit-based recruitment process.

"This is a key role that requires strategic leadership, strong stakeholder capabilities and credentials in financial accountability, audit and risk," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"Mr Worrall is currently the Managing Partner for Audit and Assurance across Australasia at Crowe Horwath, a role he has held since August 2016.

"In this senior leadership role, he is responsible for managing revenues in excess of $55 million and leads a team of more than 250 professionals in the provision of audit and assurance services.

"He is also a member of the International Accounting and Audit Committee.

"He was also the former Queensland State Chair of Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand in 2011 and has been a member of the Advisory Committee to their Board since 2012," she said.

The Premier said Mr Worrall's significant private sector experience is complemented by senior executive roles in the public sector including Assistant Auditor-General in the Queensland Audit Office and Chief Financial Officer in Queensland Treasury.

The Auditor-General is an independent officer of the Queensland Parliament, appointed to provide assurance to the Queensland Parliament and the community on the presentation of financial and performance audit of public sector entities.

Ms Palaszczuk said the appointment was endorsed by the Finance and Administration Committee of the Queensland Parliament, which the position reports to.

The Premier thanked the Acting Auditor General, Anthony Close, who has been acting in the role since late last year following the departure of Andrew Greaves.

She said Mr Worrall will commence in the role in early July for a term of seven years.

Mr Worrall's professional qualifications include Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Business in Accountancy and Public Administration. He is also a Fellow for the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and Australian Institute of Company Directors, and Registered Company Auditor for the Australian Securities and Investment Commission.

The Queensland Audit Office is one of the State's oldest organisations and are an integral part of Queensland's system of government.

Tabling in (about) July:  Audit Review of Integrated Transport Planning in Queensland.
Good timing.  It won't be pretty.  Lots of recommendations and suggestions for parties to build their transport policy on when an election is called.
