The  ' $30,000 ' is for the software support for major timetable changes.  Each timetable has to be tested etc.  But it does appear that even when the testing says there are problems they ignore it!

Onwards ...   :hc :hc :hc

PS.  Tertiary exams are on now, lots of stressed students you can add to the normal struggling punters.  Hopeless situation ..

ABC News --> Brisbane train driver shortage: 'Less than perfect' service possible on Friday, Minister warns

QuoteTransLink's interim train timetable for south-east Queensland commuters could be disrupted again on Friday just as it is about to be replaced with a new, more reliable schedule.

Acting chief executive of Queensland Rail Neil Scales has written to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, promising a Monday-to-Sunday timetable would be published tomorrow for the rest of the year.

Ahead of that, Transport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe has warned of more train service disruptions, which started in the weeks following the opening of the Redcliffe Peninsula Line in early October, before the new timetable comes into effect.

"We have had an on-time running performance in the peak this morning of 97 per cent. That is good news," he said.

Rosewood gets 100% nearly. every. day.  Guess that is excellent news huh?

Sounds like they haven't explored the option of going back to pre MBRL timetabling. Is it worth sending a tweet to the Minister seeing that he found out about the timetabling woes first on Twitter? I think the acting CEO of QR Mr Scales is also an active Twitter user. May be worth including him on the same tweet. Hehe!
I love transit but I have a specific interest in line haul transit systems, particularly LRT and BRT.

Brisbanetimes --> Transport Minister tips more delays

QuoteTransport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe has admitted that train services may again go off the rails on Friday.

Mr Hinchliffe said on-time running performance was 97 per cent during the AM peak on Thursday.

But in delivering the good news, he also had bad.

"We have just been advised that we are facing the prospect of a less than perfect level of service tomorrow," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"There will be announcements being made through the normal courses around that in the course of today."

Mr Hinchliffe said a new timetable would be published on Friday, that would be operational from Monday, November 7.

"That will be the working timetable until early in the new year," he said.

Mr Hinchliffe said the interim timetable, which he said was recommended to him by the former CEO and chair, was unreliable.

"It's not up to scratch and that's why, Mr Speaker, we're going through a rigorous process," he said.

"And I'm working very closely with the acting CEO to develop and to deliver and to announce tomorrow the reliable timetable."

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she had tasked Mr Hinchliffe with fixing the train issues and he had her confidence.

Fixing the rail timetable mess

Good Morning!

Is it?  Not for some hey?  lol

Anyway, as we have been warning for years the suburban rail system for SEQ is in a mess.  We have also been warning about the bus network for Brisbane for years, it too is a mess of failure.  This is the  ' proud ' record of a succession of failed governments.  Both the ALP and LNP are both implicated in the appalling situation we now face. The only shining hope is the new fare structure for SEQ due in January 2017.

Ok, fixing the rail mess.  When the then Richlands branch opened in January 2011 there was an interim timetable that allowed for a staged introduction and then the significant implementation of sector one timetables followed in June 2011.  A copy of this interim timetable can be found here > Richlands Jan 2011 interim timetable

This had shuttle services between Darra <> Richlands until the implementation of the new sector one timetables in June 2011.

The situation we face at present is not being sorted.  We suggest that Queensland Rail revert back to the timetable prior to Redcliffe Peninsula Line opening.  This was being delivered with a high degree of reliability.  Introduce shuttle services (mainly off peak) on the Redcliffe Peninsular Line between Petrie <> Kippa-Ring.  Yes this is an inconvenience but it will take the pressure off all lines, and allow all train crew to be made route ready without the present pressures.

Best wishes
Robert

More reliable schedule = less services, overcrowding, confusion, and commuter misery.
Any chance of the length of trains being on the new timetables? Will the new timetables just be a list of axed services?

This is a serious suggestion.   How possible would it be for QR to hire out aurizon or pac nat drivers.   Aurizon are currently in a downturn of both coal and general freight.   There is a few of them that are trained on the suburban electrics.   I know that most wouldn't be currently qualified to run the electrics and wouldn't be competent on most of the branches, but nothing is stopping them running caboolture-ipswich services.

Should we be looking at paying those qualified who are involved with volunteer organisations like SDSR and QSPR to help ease the burden.  Even if its only for guard positions.

Anything to ease the burden on the current situation.  This is ridiculous.  Was there a mass exodus in the last few weeks?

It is in no way, shape or form anywhere near that easy.

Freight drivers would not be qualified on the electric suburban rollingstock. Depending where said freight drivers are coming from, they are likely not qualified for most (or any, if they are from up north) of the suburban system. Quite often, freight drivers actually take longer to train (particularly route knowledge, esp if they did not come from Citytrain to start with) than training guards.
Having drivers trained on only one or two routes is not practical. Jobcards are not made like that. While some depots don't go along some routes, they still travel along a large amount of the network (for example, [at least] Mayne, Redbank and Kippa Ring go everywhere except Nambour and Rosewood). Plus, where are the tutors going to come from for these freight drivers? Driver schools are full up until mid-2017 as it is. Freight drivers will still need several months (at a minimum) of training before being able to drive on their own.

Volunteers are not qualified to run anything other than the track and rollingstock which they run on (unless they are already active QR traincrew members, of course). Also, guards still need around 3-4 months of training to be qualified in their role.

It is all a fairly slow process, but for safety sake, it is not a process that should be sped up. Some trainees only need 6 months out on track to sign everything off, others need 12. That's a part of being human. Things have been happening for the past 12 (and more) months with regards to training. It just takes time. Ideally, the RPL shouldn't have been completely integrated in to the network for another couple months (ie: shuttles with the old timetable being in place), but it is likely the current gov't wanted the line open ASAP so QR pushed things just that little bit far and here we are. Training has been stepped up on the new line, so hopefully things might settle down in the reasonably near future. Here's hoping for the full timetable to be back in force by the start of the new year.

From news.com.au:

Southeast Queenslanders will have to contend with a "less than perfect" train timetable on Friday, the state's embattled Transport Minsiter Stirling Hinchliffe warns.

Further service cuts are expected as Queensland Rail continues to operate on an interim timetable to compensate for driver and guard shortages - the same problems that caused a crisis last month with mass service cancellations.

"We are facing the prospect of a less-than-perfect level of service tomorrow and there will be announcements being made through the normal courses around that in the course of today," Mr Hinchliffe told parliament.

ABC reported this morning that every timetable change costs $30,000 - paid to a Canadian company. ???????
The "normal" peak timetables are "less than perfect" on many lines anyway!

Brisbanetimes --> 113 trains services to be cancelled on Friday

QuoteThere will be 113 fewer train services on Friday, as the ongoing Queensland Rail saga rolls on.

Transport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said there would be 1197 services on the Citytrain network on Friday as the shift to the new reliable timetable was made.

"That means 113 less services than the interim timetable, spread across the timetable," he said.

"These services have been limited to off-peak times, where possible.

"For customers with wait times of more than 30 minutes, alternative transport will be offered by station staff."

TransLink and Queensland Rail were due to start communicating the changes immediately.

"Tomorrow's cancellations rip the Band-Aid off the running sore that is the interim timetable that is not reliable enough for commuters," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"Commuters don't just want regular services, they want consistent services and a timetable they can rely upon."

Earlier, Mr Hinchliffe has admitted that train services may again go off the rails on Friday.

Mr Hinchliffe said on-time running performance was 97 per cent during the AM peak on Thursday.

But in delivering the good news, he also had bad.

"We have just been advised that we are facing the prospect of a less than perfect level of service tomorrow," Mr Hinchliffe said.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she had tasked Mr Hinchliffe with fixing the train issues and he had her confidence.

But Opposition Transport spokesman Andrew Powell said the situation was well beyond a joke and asked why Mr Hinchliffe had not been sacked.

"Day after day this bumbling, incompetent minister expects Queenslanders to simply cross their fingers and hope a train turns up to get them to work or school," Mr Powell said.

How big are the financial implications for cancelling airport services.   I know it must be sizeable considering they have been spare so far.

CHAOS!!!!, except to the huge majority of services which will run normally.  I wonder if any passenger is actually inconvenienced more than the QR staff who are working the overtime which they don't necessarily want to do.  At least it gives the Courier Mail and tv stations plenty of filler for their outlets.

The number of axed services may be a small %, but for some commuters (depending on the time they travel) it can be a big pain - for example during a 16 minute period on Fridays, 2 out 3 Ferny Grove Line trains have been cancelled. Shift workers (especially those who work different shifts on different days) seem to be the big losers.

Tell that to the people who are running late for work because the train they're trying to board at Wilston is overcrowded due to AM peark services being cancelled. Tell that to the student who is trying to get to Uni, but needs to leave an extra half hour early to get there on time. Tell that to the person going to the doctor who needs to catch an earlier train because they don't have enough faith in the system.

This simply isn't acceptable, and it needs to be fixed ASAP. No more 'interim timetable' - revert to a timetable now which can be delivered without this level of cancellations. If shuttles on the MBRL + old timetable are what is required, so be it.

Quote from: tazzer9 on November 03, 2016, 18:10:34 PMHow big are the financial implications for cancelling airport services.   I know it must be sizeable considering they have been spare so far.

Airport services have not been spared - they have been cut, just not as much. As they connect to Gold Coast services, they are arguably more important to run due to their interurban function and lack of possible bus replacements (buses provide an alternative to much of the suburban rail network).
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

Couriermail --> Brisbane trains: Cancellation of more than 100 rail services expected to cause commuter chaos

QuoteJUST a fortnight after commuters were subjected to widespread chaos, they will today face a repeat performance from the State Government as more than 100 rail services are cancelled.

The news came as Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk continued to defend her embattled Transport Minister, Stirling Hinchliffe.

Mr Hinchliffe told Parliament yesterday morning that travellers could expect a "less-than-perfect" level of service, only to get back on his feet again just hours later to admit 113 services would be temporarily struck out.

On October 21, 100 services had to be cancelled, which led to the unmasking of a driver shortage problem and the eventual resignation of Queensland Rail's chairwoman and chief executive Helen Gluer.

The Courier-Mail yesterday revealed that Ms Gluer cited as one of the key reasons behind her resignation the fact that she had not been made aware by her subordinates of a document that warned of the looming driver shortage issue.

At the same time, Mr Hinchliffe has repeatedly pointed to QR not providing him with such documents to justify his remaining in the job.

Ms Palaszczuk yesterday attempted to fend off an Opposition question about the difference in approach between Mr Hinchliffe and Ms Gluer.

"As we know, the CEO of Queensland Rail and the chair of the Queensland Rail board resigned," she said.

"The CEO of Queensland Rail has responsibility for the operational aspects of the train network in southeast Queensland. They failed to act on reports that were not given to the Government."

Mr Hinchliffe promised the new seven-day timetable for the remainder of 2016 would be released today.

"As I have said since Tuesday, it is apparent that the former CEO's assurance that the interim timetable was sustainable was not correct," he said. "This is deeply disappointing."

The Transport Minister described the blow to service provision as the southeast transitions away from the interim timetable as a "required diminution of services across the rail network as we shift to the new sustainable 2016 timetable". ...

I would prefer the original timetable (most can still remember it) + MBRL shuttle.

Not perfect. But having TrainLOTTO (TM) on the network can not continue.

Unlikely (but not impossible) due staff roster changes. More likely it will just be cuts from the existing timetables, but you never know...

BTW can you put somewhere in your signature your previous user name please.

They have until the most recent interim timetable change.   Otherwise it was last minute cancellations.

PDFs are not yet available, but as I understand it the ' new ' timetable is in effect the interim Mon - Thursday timetables for Monday to Thursday with today's Friday timetable being the new Friday timetable.

To be confirmed.

So no PDFs, no list of axed services, and the journey planner timetable keeps crashing. Bleedin' useless TransLink!

Journey planner crashed the moment the new timetables came out. Would have coped much better with server load if we had pdf timetables. Couldn't organise a p%ss up in a brewery!

They try to hide the real service diminution with the cryptic presentation of course.

Be fascinating to see if a statement is issued and the spin in that ..

Only in Queensland would a service delivery failure and cuts be attempted to be spun as a good thing for us all!

LOL !

Brisbanetimes --> Brisbane trains: New timetable to have 333 fewer services

QuoteThe new train timetable will have 333 fewer services from Monday to Friday compared with the timetable released on October 4.

Transport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe announced the new timetable, which will be in place from Monday, on Friday afternoon at Ferny Grove.

The minister, and Queensland Rail, have been under intense pressure, following numerous cancellations caused by not having enough train drivers after the opening of the Redcliffe Peninsula Line.

There will be 6233 services from Monday to Friday under the new timetable, which Mr Hinchliffe said was still more than was running in September.

Transport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the government "frankly... failed to deliver" the October 4 timetable, which started on the day the Redcliffe Peninsula Line opened.

"But I'm pleased that this timetable that will be in place from Monday for the remainder of 2016 will deliver the reliability and consistency that commuters expect.

"Beyond that, we will be building up to the ability to deliver more services."

Mr Hinchliffe described the new timetable as "more modest" than the October 4 timetable, which he said was "ambitious".

"But this is one that I am confident that we will see delivered, without unexpected cancellations, without challenges, and it will be reliable and consistent," he said.

This week has been tumultuous for the government, with former agriculture minister Leanne Donaldson resigning the cabinet, and Mr Hinchliffe under pressure after it was revealed Queensland Rail was warned of the looming driver shortage months ago.

When asked if Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk had confirmed he would retain his portfolios, Mr Hinchliffe said it was "entirely a matter for the premier".

"The conversations I've had with the premier in the last 12 hours or so have been all focused on my delivering of my commitment to her to ensure that we see a consistent and reliable timetable in place," he said.

"Those matters are a matter for the premier, they always are."

Queensland Rail acting chief executive officer Neil Scales said the services removed from the timetable were those where commuters could get an "adjacent service, either earlier or later".

"There's some science behind this as well, we've looked at the loading factors from our Go Card machines on each of the services," Mr Scales said.

Friday morning's AM peak had an on-time running performance of 94.8 per cent.

Mr Scales said 100 per cent was largely impossible, but the target was 96 per cent and thanked commuters for their patience.

QuoteAFTER a fortnight of train woes, Transport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe has unveiled a timetable with more than 330 fewer services than the "ambitious" one the Government failed to deliver.

Mr Hinchliffe has also refused to say whether Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has indicated to him whether he will be stripped of any ministerial responsibilities. ...

No sign of the PDFs > https://translink.com.au/service-updates/104191

' Available soon ' could mean hours or days with these wankers sadly ..

I simply cannot be bothered trolling through the journey planner in some hope of conceptualising the reductions in services.  They do this deliberately of course to frustrate any real meaningful analysis.  They throw a few numbers around at the press conference and this becomes the message.

If and when the PDFs are available, be useful to have the figures and actual cancelled services.

A cooperative regime would provide a list of lines and the changes .. but hey this is Queensland of course.

I think Mr Hinchliffe's days in Transport are now numbered too by the way.
