Demand drives state's personalised transport future

Transport options in Logan will be expanded as part of innovative new trials to deliver demand-driven shared use passenger transport services across Queensland.

Minister for Transport Stirling Hinchliffe said the Queensland Government is seeking expressions of interest from companies to deliver Demand Responsive Transport solutions for trials next year.

"Mass transit is not suitable at every location and we need to find ways to offer services that can be responsive to community need and grow or adapt with development or population growth," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"Demand Responsive Transport is the next evolution of the booked transport market and involves using trip booking technology, flexible routes and shared rides to meet customer needs.

"These trials are a great initiative because it will help deliver more flexible on-demand transport services that are tailored to individual travellers' needs.

"The Palaszczuk Government is interested in hearing from any company that can provide partial or full service offers, particularly technology opportunities that can play a role in the mobility enabled Queensland.

"After we have seen what the market can offer for Demand Responsive Transport, the Department will start the process to design service trials, beginning with an innovative process to match community need in Logan with market offerings.

"This model of transport currently exists in locations across the state, including the maxi-taxi based FlexiLink service in Ipswich, and the zonal mini-bus Kan-go services in Hervey Bay and Toowoomba, but it will be a new concept to many Queenslanders."

Mr Hinchliffe said Demand Responsive Transport was expanding worldwide as people embraced technology-driven transport options.

"Demand Responsive Transport will be a key plank of Queensland's public transport offering and provide a vital community service into the future," he said.

"These trials will focus on new operating models and technologies associated with delivering flexible mobility services that complement rather than compete with existing mass public transport."

State Member for Logan Linus Power said the design of the proposed service will considered potential trial sites within the Logan area, type of services, hours of operation, technology opportunities and appropriate fares.

"This trial will ensure there are more options for locals to deliver improve public transport services for our community and tailored solutions to ensure locals can get from a to b," Mr Power said.

State Member for Springwood Mick de Brenni said community consultation would be at the heart of the roll out of these trials.

"I want to see the trials giving our community the best chance to identify an outcome that really works for commuters and residents," Mr de Brenni said.

The Queensland Government is inviting the market to express interest in providing any product, service or offer that could work throughout Queensland.

Not really.  The BCC PPT ( https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/traffic-transport/public-transport/special-taxi-services/personalised-public-transport ) has timeables and routes, works well though. I am a strong supporter of the BCC PPT, it is a good thing.

This proposal for Logan is bit more like flexi-link but with quicker demand and response times, and individual demand.  It could evolve into a BCC type PPT in parts though.

Certainly fills a gap where route buses not warranted.

Unfortunately, TransLink's belief about where route buses are or are not warranted is not necessarily best practice.

I often get the impression they want to do away with feeder bus routes altogether until they can roll this out everywhere.

I would use Uber or a Taxi and it would work like this:

1. Each day is broken up into 48 x 30 min blocks
2. Send a request
3. At the end of each block, all requests are processed

This way it will take no more than 1 hour to get everything together and get to your destination, which is the same frequency as many of these coverage routes.

TransLink is exploring new technology to create more transport choices for Queenslanders through the Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) project.

"DRT represents a new transport option - customers can use booking technology, choose from the options offered, and have a service provider arrange a pick-up from their nominated location. 
The journey then takes place along a flexible route, picking up additional customers along the way.

"DRT combines the sharing aspects of public transport, with the convenience and flexibility of booked taxi/ride-share services. TransLink will be trialling DRT in 2017. We will keep you updated on this project through this website and look forward to sharing our findings with you."
