5 minutes late into Petrie, extra long dwell at Mango Hill had us 6 minutes late into Kippa-Ring, no chance of making the one minute for the return service.

Could this be the cause of constant late arrivals into Kippa-Ring

Probably not the sole cause but it does add to it.  My first trip out to kippa ring proved it we stopped just outside kippa ring as we needed the preceeding train to leave the station.  This was in the middle of the day as well.

QUEENSLAND Rail is at risk of its first fine in years for failing to run its Citytrain network on time.

Weeks of "abysmal" on-time running results on its Caboolture, Sunshine Coast and new Redcliffe Peninsula rail lines means the rail provider could fail to meet tough quarterly performance targets in its service contract.

An average of 95 per cent of Citytrains must run to schedule each quarter or QR will be hit with an "abatement charge" under a new contract that became effective last July.

QR data shows that disruptions tied to the recent opening of the Redcliffe Peninsula Line has led to up to a third of trains running late.

Just 56 per cent of trains arrived on time on one of the worst days so far this month for the Redcliffe line, October 6, just days after its opening.

Overall on-time results for the new line so far this month is sitting at around 84 per cent.

Flow-on problems have disrupted services on the Caboolture rail line, where up to a third of trains have run late each day this month.

Trains have also been running late on the Sunshine Coast line, with a third of trains late last Thursday.

Commuter group Rail Back on Track's Robert Dow said the "abysmal" results put QR at risk of fines.

But he opposed fining the company, saying the problems were created by policies around opening the new track that he said were outside QR's control.

Similar fines in Melbourne led to drivers skipping stations to avoid running late, he said.

"All it does is just convince operators to start skipping (stations) and cancel trains left right and centre," Mr Dow said.

"That money comes out of services, which means the operator is less able to deliver what it should be delivering.

"It is bonkers to do that. It doesn't really work."

In 2010, the rail operator was fined $203,000 for missing on-time targets.

A Courier-Mail report then found QR had been fined more than $7 million over four years for failing to meeting contractual targets.

A Queensland Rail spokeswoman said last financial year it had achieved its best on-time running result in a decade, with more than 96 per cent of trains arriving on time.

"We are disappointed that such positive results have not been delivered for customers this week and we are working hard to improve our performance," she said.

The crossover is actually almost a non-issue. It wouldn't make a skerric of difference if the Down to Up (outbound) crossover was tight up close to the platform with the current down to up (inbound) crossover, as the arriving train passing through the crossover still needs to arrive in to the platform (ie: off the crossover citcuits) before the departing train can leave. Scizzor crossovers are generally quite slow (25km/h, compared to the 50 and 40km/h points that have been installed), so would actually make things even worse, not better. The only thing that might save it is having both sets of crossovers down where the far end one is currently, that way the train in the platform could depart while the other one is still coming in. But, that would mean no access to the yard from the Down platform, so that is no good without having two sets of points (more $$ in installation, maintenance etc).
The real problem is the timetable. Having one train depart one minute (off-peak) after the other is due to arrive is simply asking for trouble. Yesterday they were giving the arriving train priority (as they should), so may have just been a settling in period, as well as many outbound trains being late to start with if they had to wait for a pilot.

The difficulty is that you can't really adjust the timetable, the distance involved between Springfield Central and Kippa Ring causes those running times to be there in the first place unless you purposefully held the Kippa Ring train at say Petrie for a few minutes longer, if the Kippa Ring line goes a station further, it'd probably solve the timetabling issue a bit.

If platforms are being alternated, then the current layout adds approx. minute to platform re-occupation time. That minute can make quite a difference for on-time running, as small delays tend to get magnified. The timetabling though is quite unhelpful. It is possible to have higher speed scissors crossovers on narrow gauge (e.g. 60kph at Tokyo on Chuo Line), though that is only useful in the outbound direction anyway.

Approach into platform 1 was surprisingly fast given we where late anyway and had a 24 minute wait with the same crew. They where doing training as well. The crossover is a long way out but the speed is still quite high, barely slower than a straight run in I'd suspect.

The delay was that the train was late to start with, switching to a crew qualified to drive the branch at Petrie, and I suspect a wheelchair passenger at Mango Hill.

Yet more cancellations this afternoon including a 60 minute gap on the Ippy Line, and quite a few Ferny Grove Line peak cancellations. I increasingly think commuters deserve a refund or free travel day as would occur in the UK after similar circumstances.

Annastacia Palaszczuk and Labor have left you stranded at the station after making the decision to remove Nundah, Toombul, Albion and Wooloowin stations from the Caboolture line.

A reduction of services has seen wait times at these four stations go from 3 minutes during the morning peak up to 8 minutes as a result of the removal of the Caboolture line.

This is an inconvenience to all passengers who get on at these stations and all who get off at this station.

Passengers who regularly travel stations like Virginia, Strathpine, Petrie all have to get off at Northgate Station whilst passengers who are travelling out to Ipswich all need to get off at Eagle Junction Station or at Central. Before Labor changed the timetable this was an uninterrupted journey.

Tell Annastacia Palaszczuk it's not okay to strip our stations of services and to put these stations back on track by signing the petition below.

what mr nicholls probably doesn't understand is that in the off/shoulder peaks pre Redcliffe line...the northgate starters terminators were absolute air carriers between bowen hills and northgate...coopers plains starters terminators still suffer from this very issue between it and fairfield.....the new northgate arangements guarantee fuller trains...

I live in Nundah and it's not that bad. The longest I've had to wait was today, missed a 7:45am service so the next one arrived 7:59am.

Nundah probably deserves to be an all stations stopper over Northgate from a pure perspective of servicing a larger population but because Northgate is a junction stop, it's where all services traditionally stop.

Train service cancellations 21st October 2016

Good Morning,

Lots of train service cancellations again today (see below).  Despite assurances that it would get better it seems to be getting worse.

What is being done to stop this?  Passengers are fed up to the gills with this mediocre outcome.

Particularly concerning is the closure of the Springfield and Kippa-Ring (RPL) lines after 7 pm tonight.

If and when this cancellation circus is over, a period of free travel for commuters is warranted in our opinion.

I have no doubt that QR warned the government that it would need some time after the line was finally connected to train all of their drivers on the route.  My guess is that the government overruled the QR recommendations and pushed ahead with the public opening as soon as possible after the line was connected - because of the lengthy delays caused by the signalling system issue.

Whether you want to blame ALP for pushing ahead with the opening - or the LNP for causing the delays in the first place - I think that QR is an innocent victim in all of this.  They do the best they can with the resources and instructions that they're given.  They were ignored when the signalling system was chosen.  They appear to have been ignored again.

If there's a major incident on this line, the blame will lie with the politicians, not QR.

There will be service alterations in place on the Queensland Rail network today.

Alterations have been planned to minimise disruption for customers as best as possible, with most occurring outside of peak periods.

Buses will replace trains on the Springfield line between Springfield Central and Darra and on the Redcliffe Peninsula line between Petrie and Kippa-Ring after 7pm.

If you are experiencing a delay to your journey greater than anticipated, please approach station staff for assistance.

If you think back to when Richlands first opened services were basically shuttles Darra <> Richlands for a while till crew accredited etc. etc. and time to embed the new timetables properly.  I am thinking  that it all has been a case of too much too quickly, compounded by the signalling issues through Petrie.   I would not be surprised if steps backward are taken to change running patterns for a while to preserve the overall integrity of the timetable.  These massive service cancellation scenarios each week cannot be allowed to continue.  People are really getting seriously messed around now.
