Moreton Bay targeted as Queensland's next priority development area

The former Petrie paper mill site and its surrounds will be transformed into a world-class innovation and knowledge precinct supporting more than 6,000 jobs, after the Palaszczuk Government today declared it Queensland's next Priority Development Area (PDA).

Deputy Premier Jackie Trad today joined Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland for the announcement of the PDA, which will be fondly known as 'The Mill at Moreton Bay' to pay homage to the site's historic roots.

"Over the next 20 years, this prime piece of land will be transformed into a vibrant urban community, with Petrie town centre and the new University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) campus at its core," Ms Trad said.

"By granting The Mill PDA status, we will partner with Council to accelerate the development of the whole site, ensuring the university campus will be open to students by semester one 2020."

"The Mill will be an engine room of economic activity, generating $950 million for the Queensland economy and supporting more than 6,000 jobs by 2036 in fields such as education, technology, health and research.

"I applaud Moreton Bay Regional Council for their hard work and determination in getting this project off the ground and look forward to working together to bring The Mill to life."

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland said the Queensland Government's approval of The Mill at Moreton Bay PDA was fantastic news for the future of one of Australia's fastest growing urban areas.

"Until now, this site was our platform for a university campus. Now, it's so much more," Mayor Sutherland said.

"PDA status will unlock the full potential of the university's surrounding land to create a vibrant community hub where people can live, work and play around education.

"The Mill is a bold new vision for our region and will help us to diversify and future-proof our economy. I thank the State Government for partnering with Council to drive this transformational project forward."

Member for Kallangur Shane King said Priority Development Area declaration was welcome news for the region.

"The Moreton Bay Region is one of the fastest growing urban areas in the country, with our population expected to grow by 40 percent over the next 20 years," Mr King said.

"I'm delighted the Deputy Premier has granted The Mill PDA status which will be a catalyst for development and bring the jobs and business activity that our region needs."

Member for Pine Rivers Nikki Boyd said The Mill will be a key urban renewal site, attracting thousands of jobs to the region.

"This is an exciting opportunity for the Palaszczuk Government to work with Council to facilitate the transformation of this area – this could include sporting facilities, entertainment and dining areas, cycle pathways and parklands," Ms Boyd said.

Key features of 'The Mill at Moreton Bay' PDA are:

460 hectares, including 94 hectares of conservation land and 16 hectares of lakes, spanning Petrie, Kallangur and Lawnton
New University of the Sunshine Coast Petrie campus at the core of a revitalised Petrie town centre, providing local tertiary opportunities for more than 400,000 residents in an area which currently has no university
The university will potentially generate $950 million for the Queensland economy
100 direct jobs per year through university construction and more than 6,000 ongoing jobs by 2036 generated by the PDA
New retail and commercial spaces, residential development, sporting facilities, shared pedestrian and cycle pathways, entertainment and dining areas and parklands
Encompassing Petrie and Kallangur train stations, promoting transit oriented development and public transport use

With the PDA now declared, Moreton Bay Regional Council will work closely with the State Government and the community to finalise a development scheme for the site within the next 12 months, to clearly guide its future over the next 20 years.

To ensure work on the university campus continues, an Interim Land Use Plan will be in place until the development scheme is finalised.
