A STATE Government upgrade of the near-capacity Centenary Highway could mean motorists paying tolls.

The Department of Main Roads has announced a $4.5 million study looking at options for upgrading the section of the highway between the Ipswich Motorway and Toowong roundabout.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the Government was working with the Brisbane City Council to find the best way to connect the Centenary Highway to the proposed Northern Link tunnel project near the Mt Coot-tha Rd roundabout.

Construction to remove a bottleneck at the Ipswich Motorway/Centenary interchange began in April.

In reading the article does the car have priority over bus transit lanes?

ozbob

I could stand corrected here Jason, but I was under the impression that the bus transit lanes might also be used by high occupancy vehicles eg. cars with possibly 2 (3?) or more passengers.  Others would pay a toll.  I think the toll idea has not been that well received by motorists, and with the political cost might well be dropped.

I think bus transit lanes does have a lot merit, particularly out in the western Moggill regions as there are some real issues with buses competing against the traffic.
