The Advertiser --> Train from city to Flinders University and Medical Centre in $85 million rail extension

QuoteA TRAIN from the city to Flinders University and the Flinders Medical Centre is set to become a reality, public transport-loving Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has announced..

The Advertiser can reveal the Federal Government will partner with the State Government and will pay half the costs of the $85 million project.

The Tonsley rail line will be extended 650m and will be partly elevated, with a pedestrian and cycle path alongside and a new station next to the FMC.

The State Government has been calling for the Federal Government to pay half the cost. It estimates the train would cut travel time by up to 18 minutes by putting commuters on the fast track instead of buses.

Travel time could be about 22 minutes from the city to the FMC when it is completed.

The State Government has said the project will create around 75 jobs while the Federal Government said developments around the transport project could create almost 2000 jobs and drive more than $800 million in investment. The project will take up to two years to finish.

Flinders Link

The Tonsley rail line is being investigated to be extended to link the Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) and Flinders University to the existing passenger rail network, through the Flinders Link Project.

The project would require:

    A 650 metre extension of the Tonsley rail line (linking the Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) and Flinders University to the rail network, including 520 metres of elevated single track over Sturt Road, Laffer's Triangle and Main South Road);
    A new station adjacent the FMC;
    An integrated shared pedestrian/cycle path adjacent the rail line; and
    A review of station access and location benefits for the local community.

Well done SA Government et al. on getting this up!  Just goes to show, homework done properly and in a timely manner can deliver.

I checked out Tonsley last January when I was there in SA for a visit.  Thought it looked promising.

Meanwhile in Queensland, we are off on another plan!   :frs:

Similar project to extending the Doomben Line to Northshore Hamilton. Only, Queensland is too incompetent to build this!

Second that!

Queensland is on a spiral to oblivion ... the anti-rail stance of TMR has not helped one little bit of course.  We also have the additional complication of the clowns at BCC.  Put it all together and it spells F  A   I   L   U  R  E  !!
