Whoever she or he is, the new LNP leader should undertake a comprehensive reshuffle of the Opposition shadow ministers.  Scott Emerson should be relegated to a safe shadow portfolio -- suggest something like Arts and Sustainable Energy.  He blows enough hot air to replace a power station.

Call for bi-partisan support for SEQ Fare Review

Greetings,

An important step for SEQ is to sort out the failed TransLink fare structure for SEQ.  The LNP when in government took the easy option of a simple fare cut, which did nothing for fixing the failure as confirmed in the TransLink Performance Data. A proper fare review process is now underway.

It is hoped that today's LNP Leadership  events might lead to the realisation that simply opposing proper SEQ fare reform is not in the community's best interests at all.

Shadow Ministers need to properly understand the real ramifications of petty opposition to a sound evidence based reform process.

Will the LNP heed the lessons of history, or continue to blunder along, hysterically screaming?

Today might well see some changes, if not Leadership, at least some Shadow Portfolio changes.  We can only hope.

Best wishes
Robert

Tim Nicholls emerges as the new LNP leader, defeating Lawrence Springborg 22-19.  Mander was eliminated in the first round by only getting 10 votes.

Deb Frecklington is elected unopposed as the new Deputy Leader.

Wonder if the LNP will support the city now that we have a city sitting MP as opposition leader?

Brisbanetimes --> LNP chooses to 'take the gloves off' under new leadership

Quote... To do that, Mr Nicholls and his deputy Deb Frecklington are assembling a frontbench that will pick from the party's experienced and "enthusiastic" members. The lineup is expected to be announced as early as Sunday, ahead of next week's parliament sitting.

Mr Springborg and Mr Langbroek are expected to play a continued role on the frontbench and Tim Mander, who was the original leadership challenger and received 10 votes in the party room for the leader position, is also predicted to play a continued role.

"There isn't going to be any 'punishment'," one MP said.

"Nicholls picked up eight of Mander's votes to win the leadership. He's not going to turn around and disrespect that by sending Mander up the back."

Former deputy premier Jeff Seeney, who was sidelined following the 2015 election loss is also expected to play a more prominent position in the party, but not necessarily on the front bench.

"I think you'll find he'll take on more of a mentor role," another MP said.

"He'll be relied on for advice and part of all the big discussions, but that doesn't mean he has to have a shadow portfolio." ...

Hope Mr Nicholls et al have the wisdom to appoint a new shadow for Transport ...  the problem for Mr Emerson is that he is wedded to past failure ... and he doesn't seem to be able to realise that the system is stuffed and needs proper reform both network and fare structure.  The Newman Govt also made TransLink into an under-resourced token outfit as well.

If the ' gloves are off ' Mr Nicholls we need real signs that is the case, not just more babbling rhetoric and group think  ...

If Scott was a key figure behind Nicholls' rise to power, you can almost be guaranteed that he's going to go into a portfolio far more glamorous than Transport. He'll be rewarded appropriately with a bump or shift to something more notable.

Springborg was unelectable and getting outmanoeuvred too often. Mander would have been a better choice (no baggage), but Nicholls at least has a good chance of winning an election.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

I agree regarding Spingborg and Mander.  Nicholls is tied too closely to the Newman years - and as per the news today (link below), plans a more combative approach than Springborg.  It was Newman's combative approach that lost them the last election - so no, they still haven't learnt and I don't believe they will win the election with Nicholls as leader.  (Labor will have a field day.)

They needed a fresh face that connected with people - not a Newman lacky with a combative approach.

http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/queensland/lnp-chooses-to-take-the-gloves-off-under-new-leadership-20160506-goomy0.html

"If we are going to beat Labor in the next election, we need to actually start attacking them."

This is ridiculous!  It's a common mistake for politicians (and party members) to see politics as some sort of war... where you have to attack the enemy and take them down.  However this couldn't be further from reality - and only alienates the people with the power to put them where they want to be.  Politics should be about connecting with people... offering workable plans... offering solutions to issues... offering a way forward for the future.

The combative approach makes them look like buffoons - as though they don't have the intelligence to come up with a workable alternative and all they can do is "attack".  This is particularly the case for the opposition - and is one reason why elections are "lost", not "won".  If the opposition offered a workable alternative instead of simply attacking, people might actually see them as a favourable alternative.  The "attack" approach will only work if the current government is doing something seriously wrong.

612 ABC Brisbane --> The new LNP leadership: prospects & implications

QuoteThe Liberal National Party in Queensland has elected a new leader. The former Treasurer Tim Nicholls defeated Lawrence Springborg 22-19 in the second round of votes. Does that improve the LNP's prospects for the next state election and are there any implications for the upcoming federal election?

Brisbanetimes --> Emerson to take shadow Treasury

QuoteA new attitude and some fresh – and not so fresh faces – will make up the Queensland Opposition, as new leader Tim Nicholls stamps his own mark on the party.

Scott Emerson has received the biggest promotion, having been offered the position of Treasurer, bringing him closer to the power base.

The move for the former Transport Minister, who served in the shadow portfolio under Lawrence Springborg, was not unexpected, with many LNP MP's labelling it as a "delayed, but right choice".

"It's where he should have been," one said.

"It's a smart move."

John-Paul Langbroek, who served as shadow Treasurer while deputy leader has been asked to take on Cameron Dick in the Health portfolio, as well as using his Gold Coast connection to help keep Stirling Hinchliffe to account when it came to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Former leader Lawrence Springborg was also expected to play a prominent role in the new shadow front bench, with many in the party expecting Mr Nicholls to put Mr Springborg's experience to good use with a senior position.

But it won't be Police, with original LNP leadership challenger Tim Mander moving to that shadow portfolio from Education, where he will be pitted against Bill Byrne.

Jarrod Bleijie, who had been covering that portfolio was expected to receive a "promotion" to a more senior portfolio, outside law and order.  While information was only being fed out in drips and drabs with only a select few within the LNP given the entire list – and those who had it keeping their lips sealed – on Sunday night, that was being mooted as Education.

Christian Rowan was tipped to take on Steven Miles in the Environment portfolio, also taking on Heritage Protection, National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef, which was previously the responsibility of Stephen Bennett.

Ros Bates was expected to return to a more prominent position, while fellow Gold Coast MP Michael Hart's spot in the group that accompanied Mr Nicholls into the party room meeting where he became leader in a 22-19 win over Mr Springborg, is also expected to receive a boost.

Former deputy premier Jeff Seeney, who was largely seen as the architect of the leadership spill which saw Mr Springborg disposed as the leader, was also expected to play a more elevated role, with many tipping him for Ray Stevens' position as Leader of Opposition Business.

Mr Nicholls was expected to announce the full shadow cabinet positions on Monday.

A new approach to dealing with the Palaszczuk Government was part of the party's reasons for voting Mr Nicholls in as leader, with LNP MP's tipping a "gloves off approach" that would see the government attacked harder  and the cross bench "treated as political opponents, not coalition partners".

Parliament – with the new seating arrangements for the LNP – will resume next week.

Couriermail --> Lawrence Springborg: Next move revealed

QuoteOUSTED LNP leader Lawrence Springborg will be appointed as chairman of the Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Committee by his replacement Tim Nicholls.

Mr Nicholls last night revealed he agreed to Mr Springborg's request for the powerful post after the pair spoke for the first time since Friday's brutal leadership battle.

The position attracts an additional $58,574 salary, the same as a shadow minister, and is the only non-Government committee chair position appointed by the Opposition Leader.

The PCMC chair position has been subject to a constant battle between the LNP and the Labor Government after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk rejected the appointment of former deputy premier Jeff Seeney.

Mr Nicholls last night told The Courier-Mail that Mr Springborg had extensive corporate knowledge and would be perfect for the role.

"Lawrence has unquestionable integrity and honesty to fill this role," he said. "And he brings a wealth of knowledge." ...

We congratulate Mr Andrew Powell on this appointment as Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads and Shadow Minister for Local Government.

We thank Mr Scott Emerson for his efforts in Transport.
