SEQ: Call for a ' Bridge Strike Watch ' website.

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport passengers has called for the setting up of a ' Bridge Strike Watch ' website to highlight the ongoing scourge of bridge strikes and perhaps help broadly educate our community  on the need to be aware of the risks, and to help reduce the incidence of bridge strikes.

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"We have highlighted the dangerous situation with bridge strikes for years (1, 2, 3, 4).  It is not getting any better.  There are enough problems with our transport systems as it is, let alone to have to contend with bridge strikes stopping trains and road transport."

"A web site could be set up to highlight this very dangerous and careless offence.  The web site should list the location of bridge strikes, the frequency and how many days since the last strike."

"Additionally educational material on prevention, and the current penalties could be detailed.  As well as what cost recovery mechanisms and the amount of costs recovered for strikes."

"We cannot continue to have our transport system constantly disrupted by fools driving vehicles into bridges, be they rail over road bridges, road over road, pedestrian over road, or building structure over road. Also driving into bridge protective beams is still a high risk event with transport disruptions."

"Enough. Time for a new approach with respect to education. A ' Bridge Strike Watch ' website may help to reduce the incidence of bridges strikes in combination with the other active and passive warning systems and controls."

Work continues on the SEQ BRIDGE STRIKE WATCH web page >> http://railbotforum.org/bsw/

More links and now includes a map of all rail over road bridges in SEQ.

There were 32 bridge strikes involving rail over road bridges in the first 6 months of this current financial year.  It is not a small matter, with very serious risks, and constant disruption to our transport systems.

Please give this web page some publicity. Raising public awareness might help reduce this scourge.
