LOL   will the carriages have WiFi and USB charge points  Quirky ?

Seriously, I really doubt it will built.  Cost will be at least 3$ billion I reckon for what?   :o  It is seriously flawed as proposed and we all know it.

At least we do not have to contend with Fare Free Friday.  That is a bonus.  Hopefully we can get the fare review moving on now.

A disappointing aspect is the lack of any real media scrutiny of either the Metro or the Light Rail proposals. The Brisbane media is part of the problem as to why Brisbane is going backwards with its transport. Government mediocrity another of course.

Transport in Brisbane and SEQ  will get a lot worse and then people might finally wake up.

It is going to be lot of pain and big dollars to sort it.

Great, yet more years of Quirk's inefficient bus network.  :fp:

At least the Gabba to Abandoned Children's Hospital Metro isn't realistically going to happen. Unless of course the LNP get into state government power, though they'll probably just remove the bus lanes from the busway.

Basically business as usual down here.

The 2 councillors I want to talk to most given the issues with buses in their constituencies ran uncontested and at least one is willing to talk about them.

Tate was a shoo-in for mayor.

My likely new councillor wants to do something about public transport and I hopefully have a decent "in" with him through a mutual friend.

Can't really complain.

My commiserations Brisbane.

The Jamieson up on the coast is "romping" it home thus far.

Likely to be relected as there was no credible competitors, plus the other recognised competitor other than Jamieson (a former Maroochy Shire mayor) kept making the headlines for the wrong reasons in their time as Maroochy Shire Mayor.

Sent to all outlets:

20th March 2016

Congratulations Lord Mayor Quirk

Good Morning,

Congratulations to Lord Mayor Quirk and all successful Councillors on their elections.

Brisbane cannot wait for an grossly undercosted, poorly developed ' Metro ' voter hook that cannot be delivered as promised.  We need to start reforming the bus network so that regions of Brisbane not served well with bus services can finally be served.  Waste, duplication and inefficiency embedded in an antiquated bus network design,  and lack of support for rail feeders must be addressed.  The poor ontime performance of Brisbane buses must be addressed. Network reform is urgently needed.

A positive is that we do not have to contend with ' Fare Free Friday ' and its perverse effects.   It is time now to move forward with the Fare Review and get the public transport network for all of SEQ activated.

Best wishes,
Robert

I guess the tram plan was a flop! Not even sure the people of West End were impressed - the look like returning a Green!

It was very interesting to see how The University of Queensland got itself involved this election. It makes some sense when you consider that UQ has actions against BCC over Customs house, and the Vice-Chancellor came out supporting the LRT.

Quid pro quo?

Quote"The Brisbane Metro is a step up from Light Rail – it's a segregated, high frequency subway system with the potential to carry 30,000 passengers an hour, 10 times the potential capacity of the Gold Coast Light Rail."

I guess the only upside, provided they can make it work, is that BCC will become both a train and bus operator. This will mean that both bus and rail costs will appear on the BCC balance sheet, and the numbers on that will force the  bus network to be reformed.

Labor could have done a lot better. Light rail big mistake.  Failed to counter and destroy the nonsense metro. Fare free Friday - very bad.  I even received some email from Labour (yes Labour) MPs commenting that it just smacked of desperation, was anti-fare review etc. etc.

I thought I talked them out of light rail many months ago.

Greens did well in terms of policy. They listened and put together sensible policy.

Brisbane is going to get a lot worse now for transport issues now.  I guess in 4 years time there is a chance of some sanity as reality bites.

Sadly, the Queenslander factor is a real thing.

Until then ...

It is beautifully ironic though.  Anti-transfer ideology will now be translated to transfer for nearly all policy.  Can't wait!   :-r

Network reform will be forced now because of the  ' metro ' ...

Light rail in Brisbane is dead, yay! I have faith that the metro will turn into an overblown bum fight which eventually won't be built at all for any number of reasons.

Neither ALP nor LNP were running on a bus network reform platform, so to be frank most of Brisbane (aside from the Centenary suburbs) are just as screwed today as they were yesterday.

The contest over the King of the Kiddy Pool is over. Onwards!  :bu
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

ozbob

Yope.  The Quirky Metro as proposed will never be built.  But we can always live in hope!   :P #WeWantMetroNow

I expect Quirky will probably retire before the next Council election.  The Quirky Metro will probably go the same as the Newman BaT.

Post Newman the LNP basically said  ' ... oh the BaT that was Newman's grand plan, never was really going to be built '.  Same deal with Quirky Metro I expect.

I have real doubts about the ability of Victoria Bridge to support a rubber tyre metro.  It needs reasonably heavy track, probably heavier than light rail. So there is a cost escalation immediately.  It will cost around $3billion minimum I reckon.  Will financially ruin BCC for a long time.

There is the issue of busway infrastructure use.  If the LNP get in State Government, they could well give it up though.  I don't think Labor will.

And I don't think the masses quite realise yet that forced transfer will be the go.  The single seat journey days will come to an end.  That is a good thing of course from a network perspective, but the public may well suddenly get cold feet once reality dawns.

A metro could be a good if it is done right. Could well be worked into Cross River Rail as well.  One never knows hey?

Stoked generally for the GC.  The joint will end up with great network of light rail in the years to come. Bus improvements will come.  'Tramway Tom' will be there for a while yet ...

^ He might be horribly inarticulate, but he was the only mayoral candidate who even has a go card and who uses public transport at all - something Quirk doesn't even do.

Wouldn't mind seeing a Green in council.

Here in Logan it was a relatively expected result, pretty well all the sitting councillors got back in, with former Councillor Luke Smith replacing the retiring Pam Parker as Mayor. This could be a good thing though, because Smith's transport policy was probably the most fleshed out of any of the candidates, with a commitment to contribute $4 million over four years towards improved services.

Quote
Policy Announcement :: 12 February 2016

Transport is a major issue within Logan.  Everywhere I go in Logan, locals are telling me how badly public transport needs to be improved across the region including connecting with areas like Brisbane and Ipswich.

If elected mayor, Logan City Council will contribute $4 million over four years to the state government to provide increased public transport services for Logan.  This is the first time in its history that Logan has contributed to public transport across the city.

Councils who financially contribute to the state government get a significant return on their investment with public transport and this is what Logan needs.

Areas like Greenbank, Park Ridge, Yarrabilba, Flagstone and Jimboomba are in desperate need of public transport. I believe that if these areas are going to be developed, the services and infrastructure need to be upgraded to coincide with this development.

In addition to this, I will also be advocating for increased services to existing public transport routes, including after hours and weekend services, to our major transport hubs across the city including Springwood, Logan Central and Loganholme.  This will assist the safety of those travelling home from work later in the evening and for our teenagers who are trying to get home from work or school at night.

This might not be as bad a result as it seems. We've avoided Fare Free Failday, and with any luck the state will get jack of BCC screwing the buses around and take them out of their hands, which probably would have been unlikely had any other party gotten in (greens would have actually done something, and Labor probably wouldn't want to offside their own party). Just the Quirktro to contend with and I don't think anyone can seriously see it getting built, it was just a counter for Labor's LR plan (I hope...)

JOINT STATEMENT
Premier and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk

Deputy Premier, Minister for Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning and Minister for Trade and Investment
The Honourable Jackie Trad

Palaszczuk Government reaffirms local council partnership focussed on jobs, infrastructure

The Palaszczuk Government has reaffirmed its commitment to work constructively with the State's 77 local governments, particularly to create jobs and deliver infrastructure, following yesterday's council elections.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said her Government valued the partnership with local governments and she has vowed to strengthen those links to generate jobs across the State.

"I congratulate the new and re-elected Mayors and councillors across the State and reaffirm my Government's commitment to work with them. My Government has always had a constructive relationship with local government and I am determined that we will continue to work closely with councils across the State," the Premier said.

Ms Palaszczuk said Queensland's trend unemployment rate 5.9% (February 2016) had fallen - compared to 6.6% the Government inherited from the LNP Government.

"My Government is determined to create new jobs, attract new investment and establish new industries in Queensland," she said.

On Tuesday, the Premier will take her Working Queensland Cabinet Committee to Mount Isa.

The Cabinet Committee has previously met in Townsville and Mackay, and Cabinet met in Gladstone.

"My Government and local councils will be partners in progress for Queensland. We need to seize the opportunities to generate new jobs and ensure we get the backing from the Federal Government on infrastructure."

Deputy Premier and Minister for Local Government Jackie Trad said the Palaszczuk Government is committed to planning, funding and delivering the projects Queenslanders need now and for the future, to cater for growing populations, drive our economy and create local jobs.

"Over the past 12 months we have been reforming the way we plan, prioritise and invest in infrastructure to ensure we deliver the right infrastructure in the right place at the right time," she said.

"Working with local governments has been an important part of our infrastructure reform agenda and we look forward to continuing this important work with new and continuing local government representatives."

Ms Palaszczuk said immediate opportunities for the Queensland Government to work with councils included:

    $70 million for critical regional infrastructure fund under the Government through its Building Our Regions program. Eligible local councils can apply from 4 April;
$180 million for the Significant Regional Infrastructure Projects Program under the State Infrastructure Fund, as part of the Government's $35 billion four-year State Infrastructure Plan, to deliver regionally significant infrastructure projects identified by communities, create jobs and grow Queensland's economy; and
seeking funds from the Turnbull Government to match the Queensland Government's contribution, such as $200 million for the Ipswich Motorway Upgrade Stage 1 Darra to Rocklea and $100 million for a new stadium in Townsville, as well as deliver its own programs and commitments, including the northern Australia initiatives ahead of the Federal Budget and election due this year.

If the destructive and arrogant Newman government didn't have the balls for bus network review, then I doubt that the Palaszczuk government will have to balls to take on the noisy pitch fork minority. Saying that, they did have the balls to drive in the lock out laws!

Old Northern Road

You mean the Palaszczuk government didn't even have the balls to stand up against the wowsers and their destructive lock-out laws

James

Lockout laws were Lynham's baby, they were going to become law regardless of what happened.

Bus network reform isn't going to happen in BCC's area for the forseeable future. Political appetite simply isn't there. Unions, grannies and BT all stand against us. Until a decent catalyst comes along, it is simply a game of agitating in the community to make people aware that better is possible.
