Brisbanetimes --> Brisbane council election: Labor pledges bus indents on busy roads

QuoteBrisbane buses would have access to more indent bays on busy roads to improve traffic flow under a Labor council election commitment announced on Friday.

Labor lord mayoral candidate Rod Harding said the 15 new bays would be installed at a cost of $6.4 million if he were elected next month.

He said that would take buses out of traffic lanes, freeing up the road for motorists.

"We're taking the buses out of the line of traffic at bus stops," he said.

"This is good for busting congestion and is equally much safer for bus passengers and drivers, so it's a win-win for everyone."

At a roadside announcement at The Gap, Mr Harding said the new bus indents would be located along some of Brisbane's busiest peak-hour roads.

"We have many key corridors across Brisbane and we'll use traffic analysis and community consultation to determine exactly where they will go," he said.

"Examples of key corridors being considered are Milton Road, Wynnum Road, and here on Waterworks Road."

Mr Harding said Labor would work with residents and businesses to decide where the bus indents were needed.

"We'll certainly undertake full community consultation before moving ahead with any sites," he said.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said his administration already delivered indented bus bays at every opportunity, right across the city.

"Two upcoming road corridor upgrade projects alone will deliver close to 15 bus bays, this is already standard practice," he said.

"We need real action to tackle congestion on our roads, which is what Team Quirk will deliver.

"Team Quirk has already delivered over $2 billion of projects tackling congestion and I look forward to announcing my plan to continue tackling traffic congestion very soon."

Friday's announcement was Mr Harding's second election commitment concerning new bus infrastructure.

Last October, Mr Harding announced plans to build bus "transitways" on Old Cleveland and Gympie roads at a cost of $91 million.

"These types of practical projects help build a faster, more reliable bus network, and ease congestion on our roads," he said.

I can take this or leave it.  On busy roads, kerbside bus lanes eliminate the need for indented bays and they provide greater benefit overall.

Yo.  At least it is recognition that the bus network is stuffed ...

Generally true, though even with bus lanes indents help BUZ/express services get past all stops. That said, it doesn't always happen that often so you'd have to have pretty high bus density for that to be an issue worth spending $$$ on and you'd probably be better off reviewing the network to see if you really need that express service.
There is no silver bullet... but there is silver buckshot.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Indented bus bays are not bus priority. They're there to get buses out of the way of cars. They actually slow buses down because they have to merge back into traffic and dozens of cars have overtaken them. The only specific case in which they help buses are when you have large numbers of buses with both expresses and all stops on the same road in a bus lane.
