ABC News --> Freight train derails at Oak Valley near Townsville

QuotePolice said eight wagons came off the tracks at Oak Valley, south of Townsville, just after 1:00am (AEST) today.

Acting Senior Sergeant Brenton Webb said crews from Queensland Rail and Aurizon were working to clear the wreckage.

"It would appear to have an axle snap on one of the wagons which has caused a derailment of a number of other wagons carrying lead ingots at the Valley Drive at Oak Valley, at the rail crossing there," he said.

"Carriages remain over the sole entrance into Oak Valley and at this stage they're hoping to have another engine remove that carriage to allow residents in and out of the community."

Queensland Rail said no-one was injured during the incident.

It said services along the track had been suspended while repairs were carried out.

The Inlander train service has been stopped at Charters Towers, with alternative transport being arranged for passengers.
