I think I have worked out how the state government calculates the benefit-to-cost ratio for the transport infrastructure projects it plans.  A positive BCR is achieved when the free media coverage it gets on the TV and radio news bulletins, on news websites and in newspapers (calculated by assessing the cost of buying advertising space equivalent to the airtime and pages space devoted to the topic) exceeds the cost of the glossy brochures, animated drive-throughs, websites etc that the government uses to sell the project to the public.

Whether a project is selected depends on polling by the party in power.  For example, if the polling shows a disenchanted group of voters in a concentrated geographic area, appoint a taskforce to examine the 'feasibility' of a new rail line to that area, or a dedicated busway, or a duplicated railway line.  No need to act if the said electorate is firmly in the other camp.

We must remove the influence of politics from transport planning in Queensland.

Quality planning is hard to achieve.  You would think though that Queensland should be very good at it, as after all is the primary role of many hey?

I am looking forward to an animation of a mono-rail system linking the various Casinos  -  we can be real ' high - rollers ' huh?

I don't think there will be any tunnels built for public transport ...  we can all just live in Casino's and catch mono-rails.  :co3 :P

They could always do a ' Planning Calendar ' . each month could feature a new planned project < winning plan that Bob!  :P

I am sure they would stuff up the dates and then have to pulp 30,000 or so (similiar to the Police Puppy Calendar) .. but this should not stand in the way of a good calendar plan.  Maybe after two or three pulp runs they might get it right?

CoastLink ' express flyers, complete with buffet cars '  would be good for January.   Brisbane Metro would suit February I think.  The rail freight revolution for Queensland would sit nicely in March.  The underground freight rail line from Acacia Ridge to the Port would certainly sit very well for April  :o  And so forth ...

Frankly, I am somewhat surprised that it hasn't been done up to now.

Maybe the next one could be: Cuddle a Koala - Spot a Koala While Walking and Cycling to Work.

That will only happen when water becomes dry, cars drive on top of each other safely and Tony Abbott enters into a gay marriage! :o :-w :hg

:pfy: :pfy: :pfy:
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

It may be an ABC satirical series, but UTOPIA highlights some of the folly of government infrastructure planning.  A new series starts Wednesday night.  http://www.abc.net.au/tv/programs/utopia/

So the only thing new that's in the pipeline this term is the Light Rail ?

#Metro

Well it passed the digital animation stage. As for NPV, BCR and environmental analysis...

Yope!  Even that is an unknown known ... if you get my drift ...  :o

There is a new planning authority convening more plans though.  We all look forward to the grand ceremonial unveiling of even more plans.

I hope they have cardboard model kits of fast trains ..  my daughter obtained a couple of rail ones at the Ekka for me.  A DD17 and a Spirit of Queensland pointy bit  :P  I haven't assembled them yet, waiting for a rainy day and a good plan.

Cardboard kits of CoastLink flyers would be a sure-fire winner hey?

Seattle, Monorail & Transit Tunnel 2014

Was just there a week ago road tested the combined tunnel. Works well they have stoplights and boom gates to prevent busses from entering while a light rail train is just ahead in the tunnel. Its only a combined tunnel for about 4 - 5 blocks The extension is opening early next year to capital hill for underground light rail only (from downtown).

It's the Noosa Show next month.  I'm hoping there will be a CoastLink simulation tent and a few giveaways.  I might even be prepared to pay for a QR showbag!  I hear those excess copies of the Beerburrum-Nambour duplication EIS study will be available for kiddies to rip out the pages and make paper planes.  Can the next plan be printed on A3 paper, so they can make even bigger planes?

Which is the better name .....  The Queensland Public Transport Taskforce or the Queensland Public Transport Authority?  Or maybe a moniker that indicates something is going to happen ... TransChange.

The Premier could say: "Today I announce TransChange, that will revolutionise how we plan our public transport operations in Queensland.  It will be a change for the better ......."

Public Transport Queensland is my preference .. PTQ   not to be confused with POQ  hey?

PTQ suggests authority and dynamism ...  they could come up with an appropriate theme song I am sure.

I could suggest this one .. but I won't ..  :o :P

Sad comedy is it not?

A nation that cannot even manage and maintain suburban / urban rail properly  ...  slowly attempting to recover some sort of freight system ..

a Prime Minister that simply does not understand the role of public transport ...

$144 BILLION!  :-w The Australian Government's Budget is about $450 BN per year, so that's 32% of the Australian Gov't budget!

This thread really is a tribute to the lunacy we are fed constantly!
