RAIL UPGRADE STILL ON HOLD

Quote

COORPAROO commuters will be left waiting at the Cavendish Rd rail crossing for another year after the project was again overlooked in the Brisbane City Council budget.

Resident Michael Alexander said the crossing upgrade had been promised for 25 years.

He said it took 30 minutes to cross the rail line during peak hour and the Coorparoo Square development would make traffic congestion worse in years to come.

A study by QUT researchers in 2013 found the Cavendish Rd crossing to be a "black spot".

Brisbane City councillor Helen Abrahams (Gabba) said she felt the commuters' pain. "I can understand the frustration of residents but also of the residents of the south and eastern suburbs that there are no funds for a crossover at Coorparoo," she said.

Rail Back on Track spokesman Robert Dow said investment in rail crossings improved traffic flow.

He said that raising the road at a crossing at Geebung, on Brisbane's northside, had proven effective for traffic. What do you think? Email editorial@southeastadvertiser.com.au
