Melbourne Street busway portal improvement project

About the project

The project will involve:

relocating services to allow for the tunnel entrance to be widened
repositioning the tunnel walls approximately 20 metres into the tunnel to accommodate a wider flare at the entrance to the portal
relocating the existing pedestrian gates to accommodate the wider flare
minor works to traffic islands within the intersection of the portal and Melbourne Street to improve bus access to and from the portal.

Works are expected to start mid-May 2015 and be completed mid-2015, weather permitting.

Council is committed to minimising the impact of the works on the community. We will keep local businesses and residents informed of construction activity in their area and will provide advance notification of activities likely to cause disruption during the construction period.

What to expect during construction:

There may be some minor delays to bus services from 8pm to the last service as a result of project works. Please contact TransLink on 13 12 30 for more information about bus service times.
Due to the busy nature of Melbourne Street and the South East Busway, the majority of works will be carried out night from Sunday night to Thursday night between 8pm and 5am.
There may be some daytime works from Monday to Saturday between 7am and 5pm.
A detour will be in place on Melbourne Street for westbound vehicles during night works. Please look for warning signage and follow the direction of traffic controllers.
The speed limit through the construction site will be reduced to 40km/h for the duration of the works. Safety is our number one priority. Please drive carefully.
The footpath on the southern side of Melbourne Street will be closed at the portal for the duration of works. Pedestrians will need to cross Melbourne Street at Grey and Merivale streets to access the northern footpath. Signage will be in place to direct pedestrians.
Where necessary, traffic controllers will be on-site to assist motorists, pedestrians and cyclists around the worksite. Please look for warning signage and follow the direction of traffic controllers.
Nearby residents may experience some construction noise and increased lighting. Council will endeavour to keep this disturbance to a minimum where possible.  Due to workplace health and safety requirements, reversing beepers cannot be switched off.

We would like to thank local businesses and residents for their patience and understanding during these important works to improve the safety and efficiency of this busy area.

Minor service delays - Melbourne Street bus tunnel

Last updated: 1.29pm Monday 18 May 2015

From Sunday 17 May until approximately 30 June, services travelling between Cultural Centre and South Bank stations may experience minor delays due to works to widen the Melbourne Street bus tunnel.

Works will occur Sunday to Thursday between 8pm and 5am.

Services travelling between these stations may experience minor delays due to reduced speeds and single-lane traffic control in place.

These works will enable better bus movement in and out of the tunnel and allow for future public transport demands.

Find out more about the project by visiting the Brisbane City Council project page.

We thank you for your patience during these important works.

This is good to see, albeit long overdue.  It also happens to be the first step recommended in the Suburbs 2 City report:

Now to wait and see if there is anything more promised in council's budget...

I hope this does not mean Suburbs 2 City is back. This may be a BCC election issue since the state government cancelled BaT. Hopefully sense prevails and bus reform wins out.

The Suburbs to City (S2C) tunnel isn't back in itself, these were just the recommendations made by the report to help increase capacity until S2C can be built. S2C can't go ahead without serious funding, and BCC currently has no way of getting that funding.

Again, another risk with delaying CRR is that BCC will cry 'the network is at capacity and the role of more capacity has fallen to buses!' and will go ahead and build the S2C tunnel.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

They have spent all their money on roads: KSD, Legacy Way and Lytton Road.

Prioritisation not funding issue!!!!
