Greetings,

Bus Reform: Extend All Door Boarding!

RAIL Back on Track calls on Transport Minister Jackie Trad to take action and fix Lord Mayor Graham Quirk's bus network.
Under our New Bus Network Proposal, Brisbane will have Australia's best bus network within two years. Bus reform means more buses, more often!

All Door Boarding Trial

A simple and quick way to improve the bus network is to speed up buses by making boarding and alighting much faster. Given the very good results from an all door boarding trial in San Francisco, USA, we propose a trial of all-door boarding be done in Brisbane on the following high-volume bus routes. All door boarding is already in use on the Blue and Maroon CityGliders.

Route 412 CBD-St Lucia
Route 66 RBWH-UQ Lakes
Route 29 W'Gabba-UQ Lakes
Route 209 Carindale-UQ Lakes
Route 139 Sunnybank-UQ Lakes
Route 169 Eight Mile Plains - UQ Lakes

Because it requires no new heavy infrastructure, bus reform is a fast, effective and inexpensive way to fix up and modernise Brisbane's bus network.

Bus Reform can be a signature, landmark, state-building project by the current administration. It can be completed entirely within the first term of office.

Best wishes,
Robert

Greetings,

Fixing Graham Quirk's Broken Bus Network

Here are three things to fix the Broken Bus Network:

1. All door bus boarding - lots of success in San Francisco

http://cdn.theatlantic.com/assets/media/img/posts/2015/03/muni_dwell/f19197bac.jpg
Image: Boarding Dwell times, San Francisco MUNI

2. Bus stop reform - the responsibility of bus stops should be handed to TransLink, with location and stop spacings reviewed

3. Phase out paper ticketing

A larger bus reform project, dealing with the waste, inefficiency and 'black holes' within the Brisbane Transport bus network is also required. This can be achieved by expanding the terms of reference for the upcoming fares review.

Bus Reform can be a signature, landmark, state-building project by the current administration, and can be completed entirely within the first term of office. It is the fastest, cheapest and most effective project out of all potential projects in the Transport portfolio.

Best wishes

I've said it before - you only need to go to Broadbeach South to see how inefficient our bus operations are.

Tram doors open - 16 doors unload people off the tram, it reverses and can be heading back in 2 minutes or less.

Want to catch the 700?  Line up single file at the front door (and even if we offered boarding at both doors the rear door is usually single-leaf and with a step to get in).

LA are trying all door boarding, including having card readers at the bus stop. UQ Lakes is one of the places that I think external readers would make a huge difference.

BrizCommuter has observed dwell times in excess of 5 minutes at QUT KG on many an occasion - quite inefficient use of bus resources!

It is possible to get hand held validators and have staff let people on buses for some overseas systems. Useful at peak hour.

Many stops come to mind that would benefit from external readers. All busway stations could easily be done (including expanding the gated area at Roma Street to include buses) and other key kerbside stops.

Hopefully improving bus dwell times is a major consideration for the new ticketing system.

What we have is POLICY CONSTIPATION.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/constipation

a state of slowing down, sluggishness, or inactivity.

Sydney has gone through and rationalised the bus stops. They have the cross town metro bus network, they are embarking on all door boarding and are getting buses out of the CBD.

Brisbane??!!??!?

Sydney buses to make fewer stops
http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/sydney-buses-to-make-fewer-stops-20140808-101cg8.html

"
Is your bus stop within 400 metres of the next one?

If so, it may be on borrowed time.

Work will begin on Sunday on a project to remove at least eight bus stops from Sydney's inner west – an early stage of a government agenda to cut the number of stops across the city.

Transport for NSW has a long-term aim to speed up buses through Sydney by scheduling services that stop at fewer locations.

You know, I can actually remember being proud of our system up here?  Would have been before 2008 when the rot really set in.

In those days, before MyZone, Opal, light rail projects, the NWRL etc, you used to be able to laugh and point and say "at least we aren't as bad as Sydney".

We have no such saving grace now.

Transport for NSW to consider all-door bus boarding

The NSW Government will consider whether using all doors of a bus to load passengers at CBD locations should become common practise following a two-week trial.

CBD Transport Coordinator General Marg Prendergast said experts had begun a review of data gathered before and during the trial, which ran from 15 to 26 June and allowed Opal customers to use middle and rear doors to board buses at the busiest CBD stops.

"We know the CBD is approaching a time of increased activity and significant disruption, so we want to ensure all parts of the network are operating as effectively as possible," Ms Prendergast said.

"The trial was conducted to see whether all-door loading under the supervision of marshals could reduce the time buses were waiting at stops without sacrificing safety for customers and other road users.

"As we monitored the trial, we saw there were some noticeable upsides at those busy locations, some of which we hadn't anticipated. One example was that while there were no buses at a stop, marshals were able to ensure cars and other vehicles didn't block the bus stop areas."

Changes to bus routes in the CBD from October are part of changes to the city including the construction of light rail along George Street.

"Buses waiting at stops don't just slow cars, taxis and other vehicles, they delay the buses behind them that have to wait to use the stop," Ms Prendergast said.

"More than ever before, after October we will need to make efficient use of all road space in the CBD.

"By reducing the time buses are stopped, journey times will be reduced, reliability will improve and all traffic will get a smoother run through the city.

"An extra one million people are expected to live and work in Sydney within the next decade. While the new Sydney Metro and light rail are a big part of handling that increased challenge, we need to get the most out of our roads, buses and active transport like walking and cycling."

Customers who caught buses at stops participating in the trial are encouraged to provide feedback at transportnsw.info or by calling 131 500.

Why is Syd/NSW going gangbusters on simple public transport reform that makes sense and doesn't cost money while Se Qld is just coasting? All door boarding makes sense especially coming up to the games in and around the Gold  Coast. Was on the bus between Helensvale and Gold Coast Hospital when these tourists hopped on via the rear door and touched on The bus driver was so abrupt and rude saying "Hey you can't do that get off" So they got off again went back in the front door. I spoke to them and apologized for the bus drivers rudeness and explained that there are only 2 bus routes you can board via the rear door in Se Qld and its not here on the Gold Coast its in Brisbane. :(

Queensland, a transport failure 'world class' example

Greetings,

A good example of the failure culture in Queensland  is not moving to  all door bus boarding on our more frequent bus routes.

Other jurisdictions do this as a matter of routine.  It speeds up boarding, reduces dwell times.

The lack of real transport options for Queens Wharf, largely glossed over by most, is another sign of the blunder-culture  that pervades the halls of ' incompetence ' in Queensland.

Good luck, you are going to need it.

Best wishes

It took over 5 minutes to get everyone on board a 100 at Queen Street at lunch time on Tuesday due to a number of people who insisted on buying a paper ticket on the bus, meaning the rest of the passengers were unable to board while they took a (extremely) long time to get each ticket. Would have been much quicker had there been all door boarding. Of course phasing out paper tickets will help too

Of course phasing out paper tickets will help too

its even worse at 5pm...the 100 buz has one of the longest queues in the station....if even 1 turns up 5 mins late then the line can easily stretch back 40-50 people. Flow-on effects is then slower boarding times at the other stations as the driver constantly has to tell and wait for passengers to move to the back.
The 140 is another major sufferer of this problem.....

If ya talking paper tickets, personally i think the gold coast and its 700 route has the worst paper ticket delays of any bus route in the entire SE qld network. And were not even getting into the 5 dollar gocard topup popularity of that route as well.
Luckily this bus route is 7.5 minutes to offset the boarding delays.

I reckon once they get all door boarding happening on the frequent routes (above), can then be expanded to all BUZ routes ..

There should be rear door boarding at Broadbeach South - you see the sheer ridiculousness of a Flexity 2 with all 16 doors loading and unloading compared to a Bustech which may not even have a side door (but even if it does everybody still has to board at the front).  Trial it there, then roll out to Route 700 in full, then elsewhere.
