Qantas donates 747 to HARS, Wollongong
« on: March 09, 2015, 08:13:47 PM »
Gday all,
Went for a trip to Sydney over the weekend to see the landing of Qantas' 747-400, VH-OJA 'City of Canberra', on its final flight from Sydney to Wollongong, where it will form part of the HARS museum at the airport.
This aircraft holds the world record for the longest commercial flight, traveling from London to Sydney in one go, in just over 20 hours. It has now quite possibly set the record for the shortest delivery flight for a 747, being just over 10mins flight time from Sydney to Wollongong.
The flight, QF7474, landed at Wollongong Airport at 7:47am, with four of Qantas' most experienced pilots on board who have spent around 25 hours in the simulator preparing for this rather tricky landing, the runway being much shorter and narrower than that a 747 would normally land on.

Here is my favourite photo I got, showing some of the massive crowd (thousands of people) that gathered to witness it final flight of this historic aircraft:
