26 May 2023

JOINT STATEMENT

Premier and Minister for the Olympic and Paralympic Games
The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk

Minister for Tourism, Innovation and Sport and Minister Assisting the Premier on Olympics and Paralympics Sport and Engagement
The Honourable Stirling Hinchliffe

. Thousands have their say on lasting legacy of Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games
. Key focus on inclusion, sport, health, environment, connectivity and economy
. Legacy consultation paper and survey is now open for comment until 25 June 2023
. Final Brisbane 2032 Legacy Plan to be released this year.

Nearly 14,000 ideas have been shared as part of planning for the legacy of the Brisbane 2032 OIympic and Paralympic Games.

The Hopes and Dreams submissions as well as feedback from the Brisbane 2032 Legacy Forum held in March form the basis of a consultation paper - Elevate 2042 - released today.

As the name suggests, Elevate 2042 focuses on the years leading up to the Games and the ten year after, in order to maximise the economic, social, environmental and other benefits of hosting this once-in-a-lifetime event.

Draft themes highlighted in Elevate 2042 include:

. Sport, health and social inclusion
. A better future for our environment
. Connecting regionally and globally
. Economy, jobs and innovation.

Key suggestions include:

. Building the most sustainable venues
. A First Nations Cultural Centre
. Construction of 'Innovation Clusters' focusing on augmented reality, bio-medical and environmental technology
. Planting a Legacy Forest
. Enhanced and inclusive mass transit solutions.

The consultation paper also lays out a draft vision for our Games legacy aspirations:

'By 2042, a child born today has more opportunities in life, in an inclusive society and a connected region'.

The final Brisbane 2032 Legacy Plan will be released in late 2023, in partnership between the Queensland Government, Australian Government, Brisbane City Council, Sunshine Coast Council, City of Gold Coast, Council of Mayors (SEQ), Australian Olympic Committee, Paralympics Australia, and the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee.

People are encouraged to have their say on Elevate 2042 by visiting  qld.gov.au/about/brisbane2032 to view the Legacy Consultation Paper and survey until 25 June 2023.

Quotes attributable to the Premier and Minister for the Olympic and Paralympic Games:

"The Olympic and Paralympic Games have never been about a few weeks of spectacle. They are about making the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity.

"Just as South Bank is a legacy of Expo 88, we are planning now for what the legacy of 2032 will be.

"Pleasingly, bold ideas were suggested on what we can advance by hosting the Games in our backyard. These ideas came from across the state, and beyond.

"That tells me people are embracing this opportunity and I encourage everyone to play their part."

Quotes attributable to the Minister Assisting the Premier on Olympic and Paralympic Sport and Engagement, Stirling Hinchliffe:

"This is the next step in making the most of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games here in Queensland.

"Elevate 2042 brings together the community's Hopes and Dreams for 2032 Games legacy and the brightest, considered ideas of the March Legacy Forum in Brisbane.

"A considerable amount of formal and informal discussion on many great ideas for economic and lifestyle legacy has already occurred.

"The Elevate 2042 paper presents a further opportunity for the broader Queensland and Australian community to shape the longer-term benefits of delivering the world's biggest event."

Quotes attributable to President of the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee Andrew Liveris AO:

"With an ambitious, clearly defined Legacy Plan, we can use the catalytic effect of the Games to elevate our lifestyles and the health of our communities, across economic, social, emotional and physical aspects," Mr Liveris said.

"Now is the time to refine the thousands of ideas we collectively share into clear themes and objectives that will enhance the Games and go beyond. We invite all Australians to be part of the process."

Quotes attributable to Federal Government Minister for Sport Anika Wells:

"The Australian Government will optimise the Games Legacy as we strive towards healthy, active, inclusive, accessible, and equitable sporting communities in our region.

"Brisbane 2032 will extend the legacies of the Games beyond Brisbane, beyond Queensland, and beyond Australia's border.

"Our mission for Brisbane 2032 is to foster greater participation in sport so more people reap the preventive health, social inclusion, and connectivity benefits it provides."

Quotes attributable to Lord Mayor of Brisbane and Chair of the South East Queensland Council of Mayors Cr Adrian Schrinner:

"The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games aren't just four weeks of sport. They're an opportunity of a lifetime," Cr Schrinner said.

"Our residents are eager to seize this opportunity to make our cities, our region and our state more sustainable, inclusive and connected.

"A business-as-usual approach isn't going to cut it. Only through big bold ideas can we deliver a Games Legacy that benefits everyone."

Quotes attributable to Cr Tom Tate, City of Gold Coast Mayor:

"It's critical Gold Coasters have their say as we shape the future of not only our city but the entire South East Queensland region," said Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.

"Legacy is about maximising opportunities for residents, visitors and business as well as ensuring our natural environment scores gold from the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics.

"More accessible green and open space, improvements in sustainable waste and recycling projects and better public transport connectivity will all help shape the SEQ region for the next two decades and beyond."

Quotes attributable to Cr Mark Jamieson, Sunshine Coast Mayor:

"The Sunshine Coast is committed to ensuring that the 2032 Games leave a positive legacy for our region well beyond 2032," said Cr Jamieson.

"We would be selling our community short if we did not seek to maximise every opportunity afforded from our involvement in the 2032 Games.

"The Legacy Consultation Paper offers an important opportunity for our community to provide feedback and have their say."

Quotes attributable to Catherine Clark, CEO Paralympics Australia:

"The vision and ideas that we've seen so far in the consultation process fill Paralympics Australia with confidence that Brisbane 2032 will be the most inclusive Games the world has ever seen," said Ms Clark.

"By doing so, we create a platform for genuine social change for Australians who live with a disability.

"I urge everyone with an interest in contributing to this once-in-a-generation opportunity to have their say on the Legacy Consultation Paper and play their part in creating a more inclusive Australia through the power of sport."

Quotes attributable to Matt Carroll, CEO Australian Olympic Committee:

"This consultation process has provided a wonderful insight into the community's desire to see a lasting legacy for sport in Queensland and Australia leading into and after the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games," said Mr Carroll.

"The Hopes and Dreams survey, combined with the Legacy Forum, certainly reinforced how important sport is to a broad cross-section of Queenslanders and Australians, in creating a healthier and happier community."

I understood the Coorparoo Secondary College campus (which this is adjacent to) would have more than enough room to accommodate all 3 as it is currently undersubscribed and has land for expansion of the facilities without eating into the playing fields.

If the Gabba State School physical facilities are going to remain in place and the school itself can be moved (to somewhere nearby that is already State land and has more than a tiny patch of grass in one corner, I'm not sure what the big deal is.

Couriermail --> $800k spent on consultants to tell government to axe Olympic body $

QuoteQueensland taxpayers forked out close to $800,000 for a third-party consultant to tell the state government it should scrap a planned independent Olympic infrastructure body.

The state government controversially scrapped the Olympic Coordination Authority (OCA) – which would have been an agency involving all levels of government to oversee Games-related infrastructure in March – despite it being in the original bid.

At the time, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk pointed to an unreleased report prepared by Deloitte into the Games governance arrangements, saying the report recommended the establishment of a Brisbane 2032 Coordination Office. ...

Couriermail --> Fears Brisbane 2032 Games will fail without key Sunshine Coast rail investment, says council $

QuoteThere is "a great risk" to the success of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games unless key transport projects are delivered, with the Sunshine Coast Rail and Gold Coast light rail extending to the airport chief among them, major councils are warning.

The Sunshine Coast Regional Council is also in danger of having a shortfall of hotel accommodation needed for it to host Games events and the athletes villages.

The concerns are revealed in submissions to the Senate inquiry into Australia's preparedness to host the Olympic and Commonwealth Games.

The inquiry was set up by the Coalition and the Greens after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk's decision to dump an independent infrastructure agency to oversee projects for the Games in favour of keeping it in-house.

The Sunshine Coast Rail is one of the projects subject to the federal government's 90-day infrastructure review, sparking fears it could fall victim to cuts or be shortened to stop before Maroochydore. ...

Couriermail --> Mayors' Games changer: Push to tackle Government power grab $

QuoteSouth East Queensland mayors have taken a swipe at the Palaszczuk Government amid fears of a lack of transparency and progress.

The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games needs an independent oversight authority that can withstand changes in government and unforeseen circumstances, southeast Queensland mayors are warning in a swipe at the Palaszczuk Government's power grab.

The mayors are also calling for an urgent acceleration of pace for the Olympics preparation across the board to get the work done in time.

The South East Queensland Council of Mayors, in a submission to be lodged with the Senate inquiry into Australia's preparedness to host the Olympic Games, warn that a quarter of the time to prepare for the global event has already passed. ...

I agree with the Council of Mayors (SEQ), headlong to a massive shambles!

Transparency is a major issue with the Queensland Government.

Public transport needs a proper authority - Public Transport Queensland. Cut the crap and act!!

I don't agree with Amy McMahon's ideas nor petition. Despite the overall cost of the project, the redevelopment will help attract big events to the area post games. Plus the whole area is in dire need of regeneration. Hopefully, they will tunnel under both Vulture St and Stanley Street for through traffic as well.

As for the school, there was only a small cohort of student's there anyway. These students will be moving on to high school in a couple of years. Furthermore, vertical schools are the way to go in the inner city and suburbs now as it creates more open space around the school grounds for the students. Therefore, I agree with the State Government"s proposal of a combined vertical school at Coorparoo.

This should also be done at Indooroopilly as a solution, by going higher. The transport situation can be solved by extending the busway from UQ to Indooroopilly to cater for the extra demand.

Jonno

I struggle with the price tag (2.7billion) and they way they have consulted those impacted including Raymond Park (which isn't big enough).  Agree vertical schools is the go in inner city/most areas really so why not build it on CCR land with oval/ park shared open space'

Brisbane 20-thirty-who? Olympic bosses' challenge to tell world who we are

So... Wooloongabba Stadium rebuild ($2.7 billion) and and Brisbane Arena ($2.5 billion) will be excluded from the Olympics Cost Calculation assessing 'cost neutrality' because its not strictly an expense out of the Organising Committee of the Olympic Games's budget. 🤯

Quote"The cost-neutral commentary is all about the [Organising Committee of the Olympic Games'] umbrella of responsibility ecosystem, which is nearly $5 billion," Liveris said.

Quote"... There is no commitment there to make that cost-neutral to the taxpayer, because that's for the taxpayers' benefit. That's really the way to think about the two numbers."

Couriermail --> Me too: NRL wants 'essential' upgrade to Suncorp Stadium for 2032 Olympics $

QuoteThe NRL is demanding Suncorp Stadium not be overlooked for funding ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, warning it will have passed its useful life by then.

In a sign rugby league has woken up to the fact the AFL and cricket will be the main beneficiaries of the $7bn infrastructure spend, it has made a surprise bid for the state government and Olympics Organising Committee to get behind upgrading the stadium.

The move blindsided the government, which said the stadium was already considered one of the best of its kind in the world and "that will be as true in 2032 as it is today".

While $2.7bn is being splashed on the Gabba Stadium, there has been no formal commitment to upgrading Suncorp Stadium. ...

Sent to all outlets:

9 years to failure ..

9th July 2023

Greetings,

Nine years to go for the 2032 Brisbane Games ( Couriermail: Brisbane 2032 Games: Sky show to mark '9 Years to Go' https://www.couriermail.com.au/sport/brisbane-olympics-and-paralympics-2032/brisbane-2032-games-sky-show-to-mark-9-years-to-go/news-story/31a62711b5d9dc64c344c82df5dae261 )

And still we are a public and active transport deficient jurisdiction.  Plenty of funding for a 500 drone-show, meanwhile Ipswich is struggling to get any funding for improved bus services.  It is little wonder the Palaszczuk State Labor Government is increasingly on the nose.

The Lord Mayor of Brisbane touted the Olympic Games as the " Car free Games ".  Seriously, they all delusional.  Where are the sky-taxis for the masses?

There needs to be rapid and focused attention on setting up a proper Public Transport Authority for Queensland ( Public Transport Queensland
https://railbotforum.org/yourls/5q  4th May 2023 ).  This Authority would manage the public and active transport arrangements for the Games and sort out the festering mess that is public transport today.

Time is fleeting ...

Best wishes,
Robert

I really did choke on my cereal when I read on the Q2032 site that the Queensland Government regards the Sunshine Coast as 'THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN OF SOUTH-EAST QUEENSLAND'.

https://q2032.au/map?region=sunshine-coast

More gloss, more hype from a state government clearly in election mode.
