Upgrade for the Rockhampton and Bundaberg Tilt Trains

12/02/2015

Queensland Rail Travel customers can look forward to a number of improvements from mid next year (2016) as work sets to start on a major overhaul of the Rockhampton and Bundaberg Tilt Trains.

The work will involve the mid-life overhaul of the two trains including upgrades to key mechanical, electrical and control components and internal refurbishments.

Queensland Rail Executive General Manager Travel and Tourist Martin Ryan said the project was great news for customers.

"The Bundaberg and Rockhampton Tilt Trains, which travel between Brisbane and Rockhampton, are among the most popular trains in Queensland Rail's long distance fleet," Mr Ryan said.

"In the 2013 – 2014 financial year, 225,000 people chose to take a journey along Queensland's southern coast aboard a Tilt Train service.

"Annually, the trains travel approximately 350,000km to connect communities from Brisbane to Bundaberg and Rockhampton and have travelled more than five million kilometres since their introduction in 1998.

"This overhaul will ensure the trains continue to perform safely and reliably, and will also extend the serviceable life of the rollingstock."

Mr Ryan said the overhaul of the Tilt Trains was part of a wider plan to see the Queensland Rail Travel fleet enter a new era of rail travel.

"This overhaul will complement our state-of-the-art Spirit of Queensland fleet which was completed late last year and also services the Queensland coastline," he said.
Works on the Tilt Trains will be undertaken by Downer EDI in Maryborough and is expected to be completed in mid-2016.

Throughout the project, some timetable changes will be experienced including temporary changes to rollingstock used for the Tilt Train.

For more information, customers can visit www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au or call 1800 TRAINS (872 467).

I wonder what replacement rolling stock will be used?

With a bit of luck it will be 1079 + wooden carriages ..   :P

DEL + carriages (expect the carriages presently being used on the SOTO whilst carriages being refurbished for that service).

Quote... What you need to know about the Traditional Diesel Replacement train:

It is a traditional passenger train locomotive hauled with sitter carriages and a standard service club car. Carriages are a traditional, older style with comfortable cushioned seats that recline.
Revised seating options mean no Business Class is available. For Business Class travel please consider the Electric Tilt train
Accessibility on the Traditional Diesel Replacement train is limited. Customers travelling with their own wheelchair on board would need to travel on the Electric Tilt Train, which has accessible spaces available.
Customer with mobility impairments who have collapsible wheelchairs are required to be able to walk to their seat and toilet facilities independently, or be accompanied by a carer or friend. Their collapsible wheelchair will be stowed in the luggage compartment for the journey.View the accessibility fact sheet.
Traditional service has a reduction in capacity from 282 to 144 passengers.
A Licensed Club Car provides light refreshments
Fold down table and foot rests are provided
Toilets and drinking fountains are located in the end of each carriage
All seats face the direction of travel ...

^Trip to Bundy interesting.  A few motels to chose from within walking distance of railway station.  May be worthwhile what show is featured at the Moncrieff Theatre on the Saturday night.

Spanish Motor Inn is good too, probably a bit far from the station, but if you ever go up there by car they clean the windscreen each morning for you  :-t

An analysis of QPS activity today.

There is a very blatant opportunity for people to obtain concession rail fares.  But what has been happening is that the concession fare tickets have been passed on to others. So the inbound tilt was checked this morning for ticket compliance and random stuff - woofers per se.  I agree with QPS Rail Squad intent.

It is a bit puzzling as to why the QR web page has no disruptions for today's DEL+carriages (TiltLander) to Rocky.

I suspect that yesterday's TiltLander was probably terminated at either Nambour or perhaps a little further south.

I am going to Bundaberg station to see if it appears on timetable (due here at 5.24pm) later this afternoon.  Probably coaches to Nambour and it may have started from there.  Time will tell.

I hope it is running as scheduled tomorrow, even if only to Nambour, after all main reason came to Bundy.

Went to Bundy Rum Distillery and Hinkler Aviation Hall today, both excellent.

Washouts everywhere. There was a small washout next to North Boondall. At the same time about 90 cars were written off in the North Boondall car park from what I was told.

^  I heard a loco as I posted above. Went down to the station and found an empty TiltLander set being moved to Rocky for tomorrows southbound TiltLander.  So that will be running, not sure if it will get all the way but I expect probably to Nambour or maybe Landsborough.  This was yesterday's southbound TiltLander that was terminated at ? Landsborough. Still not sure what happened to today's northbound scheduled TiltLander.  Perhaps passengers transferred to another service or coaches.

Word on the train is that the SCL might be re-opening to non electric later today, so we might make it through to Roma St direct.
