54 is more or less equal to every open LX on the passenger network in SEQ (I think).

Meanwhile they are about to upgrade Lindum, Burpengary and (as I understand it) Banyo, while doing nothing about the open LXs adjacent to them.   :frs: :frs: :frs:

We can't focus on everything at once (otherwise it wouldn't be focus, it would be scattergun).
There needs to be a large cash input for this to happen, and I just can't see it coming from anywhere.

Opposition is invisible as well. Best bet is to couple LX removal with TOD improvement immediately around train stations, similar to what New Zealand is doing now. Consider using a one-off contribution or a spread contribution to recoup some of the costs, or just charge it to general revenue knowing that land tax revenue will flow from it over time.

Councils won't be able to block townhouses or apartments under a sweeping reform aimed at improving affordability – but will it work? And could the idea cross the Tasman?

^ In other words, they have removed more metropolitan level crossings in the last 7-8 years than we actually have left to begin with.

This in a state where you can still walk onto the lines in most places outside the inner city (or where the track hasn't been trenched or elevated).

Eight More Dangerous Level Crossings To Go By 2027

9 September 2022
More dangerous and congested level crossings are set to go, with the Andrews Labor Government today announcing another eight will be removed on the Upfield Line as part of our Big Build – making local roads safer, improving traffic flow and clearing the way for more trains, more often.

The Labor Government promised to remove 50 dangerous and congested level crossings by 2022, and we smashed that goal, with 66 now gone for good. We're on track to remove 85 by 2025 – but we aren't stopping there.

In the past six years, the Government has removed 66 level crossings more than a year ahead of schedule – while also building 37 new and upgraded stations, delivering 50km of bike paths and unlocking around 20 MCGs of open space for local communities across Melbourne.

Level crossing removals have supported more than 8,000 jobs – and we've seen more than 72 million work hours completed.

By removing eight more level crossings on the Upfield Line – including the notorious boom gates on Brunswick Road – Victorians will spend less time stuck in traffic and more time with family and friends.

The Andrews Labor Government will remove:

Albert Street, Brunswick
Albion Street, Brunswick
Brunswick Road, Brunswick
Dawson Street, Brunswick
Hope Street, Brunswick
Union Street, Brunswick
Victoria Street, Brunswick
Park Street, Parkville
When the project is complete, there will be no level crossings between Parkville and Coburg on the Upfield Line.

Around 71,000 vehicles travel through the level crossings during the morning peak each weekday and the boom gates are down for up to 30 minutes.

An elevated rail bridge along the Upfield Line will complement the new rail bridge from Bell Street to Moreland Road. The project will make the Upfield Bike Path one of the most important bike paths in Melbourne, and a major transport connection from the north into the city.

As seen already by communities in Coburg and Brunswick, elevating the rail corridor will be a boon for the Upfield Bike Path, with a new dedicated bike and pedestrian path from Bell Street in the north, to Park Street in the south, providing a safer and quicker connection for locals.

Community consultation and further project design will occur early next year, with the level crossings to be removed by 2027. 20,000 people are employed across Victoria's Big Build.

Quotes attributable to Premier Daniel Andrews

"We're not wasting a minute removing dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne, ahead of schedule, with 66 already gone for good – and we're not slowing down any time soon."

"We're creating local jobs, with 20,000 people employed across our Big Build, increasing safety and reducing congestion – it's good for the economy, and good for Victorians."

Quotes attributable to Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan

"Every Victorian knows the dinging sound of boom gates coming down and the frustration that comes with it, that's why we're getting rid of them – saving lives, easing congestion and getting you home sooner."

"We're getting rid of eight more of these death traps on the Upfield Line – making local roads safer, improving traffic flow, and clearing the way for more trains, more often."

Making Melton Level Crossing-Free

06 October 2022

Melton will soon be level crossing-free – with the Andrews Labor Government today announcing four more level crossings in Melbourne's outer west will be gone for good, reducing congestion and paving the way for more train services to Melton than ever before.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Member for Melton Steve McGhie today visited Cobblebank Station – delivered by the Labor Government as part of the Ballarat Line Upgrade – to announce level crossings at Coburns Road, Exford Road and Ferris Road in Melton and Hopkins Road, Truganina will be removed by 2028.

Work will start next year to remove these dangerous and congested crossings – unclogging roads for more than 73,000 vehicles each day, with the boom gates currently down for up to 28 minutes of the morning peak while 16 trains pass through.

One of the fastest-growing communities in Australia, Melton will also see a brand-new modern and accessible station built, paving the way for future improvements to the line and increased train capacity along the rail corridor.

Coburns Road is a key connection from Melton to the Western Freeway – removing it will slash travel times and improve traffic in and out of Melton, while removing the Exford Road crossing will ease congestion around the town's busy main street.

Ferris Road is a major arterial through the new suburb of Cobblebank – removing its level crossing will help commuters get to and from Cobblebank Station and the Western Freeway.

Closer to the city, getting rid of the level crossing at Hopkins Road, Truganina will ease congestion for the community and improve access for trucks travelling around the growing industrial centre.

Early assessments indicate the level crossings at Exford Road and Coburns Road will be removed by a rail trench, while Hopkins Road and Ferris Roads will be removed by elevating the road over the train tracks.

Final designs will be released after extensive consultation with the community and detailed site investigations.

These four level crossings will join two already removed along the Melton corridor at Fitzgerald Road in Ardeer and Robinsons Road in Deer Park, and a third removal currently underway at Mt Derrimut Road – delivering smoother connections and creating thousands of local jobs.

This work to deliver more services for Melton passengers follows the completion of the Ballarat Line Upgrade – which has delivered trains every 20 minutes during the peak, meaning an extra 140 weekly services through Melton, and new stations at Cobblebank and Rockbank.

Since 2015, the Labor Government has removed 67 level crossings, built 37 new and upgraded stations, created 50 kilometres of walking and cycling paths and unlocked 20 MCGs of open space to deliver massive improvements for communities across Melbourne.

For more information about the new level crossing removals and preferred design solutions, visit levelcrossings.vic.gov.au.

Quotes attributable to Premier Daniel Andrews

"We've already removed 67 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne – but there's more to do, and we're getting on with making Melton completely crossing-free."

"This project will build on our huge transport investments in Melbourne's outer west – with more new stations, fewer level crossings and hundreds more services already running through Melton, this is the next step to deliver world-class public transport for our fastest-growing communities.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan

"The Ballarat Line Upgrade delivered more than 140 extra services every week for the Melton community, and we're not stopping there – four more level crossing removals and a new station will pave the way for more services, more often."

"You can't trust Matthew Guy's Liberals to do anything but cut transport projects and cancel services – they've promised to 'reprioritise' level crossing removals, putting better connections through Melton at serious risk."

Quote attributable to Member for Melton Steve McGhie

"Only Labor has a plan to deliver the roads and public transport connections our growing community needs – families in Melton will be thrilled to see the back of these congested crossings once and for all."
