It's the same ex-pollie (a former National Party pollie) who was bleating about the CityCats and his impact on his rowing in the river a few weeks ago.

Media release 22nd November 2015

SEQ: Fare unaffordability crisis continues - Time for fare action

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport passengers has said the October 2015 Public transport performance data again has ' affordability ' as the standout failure of the KPIs.

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"The unaffordability of fares is again the key standout failure of the latest TransLink Key Performance Indicators - October 2015 (1, 3, 4). There is no doubt that the previous State Governments and TransLink have failed to deliver a fare system that is equitable, drives patronage and assists in mobilising our community. The failure to properly sort the SEQ fare structure is a very sad indictment on previous Governments."

"To the credit of the present State Government, a fare review is underway, but it is in slow motion unfortunately - as with most things in Queensland."

"Cubic has just announced overseas that the go card contract has been extended to 2019 (2). So we will be using the go card for a number of years yet. It is therefore important that the failed fare structure in SEQ be fixed, and fixed promptly. Waiting for the next election is not acceptable."

"It is also disappointing that such important news concerning the go card is found out from overseas websites. It is though the public transport community in Queensland does not really matter."

Letter to the editor: Well done QCOSS

Dear Editor

Well done  to QCOSS (Ipswich defendants get a free ride to the courthouse, QT Nov 24) for the initiative to give defendants pre-loaded go cards for travel to Court.

This does highlight the issue of fare unaffordability generally in SEQ.  In October 2014, the Queensland Labor Party indicated that it was their policy to give concession fares to the unemployed.

Every other state and territory In Australia does this by the way.  We are still waiting for concession fares for the unemployed to be rolled out in Queensland.

To the Government's credit, a fare review is underway, but outcomes need to be accelerated.  TransLink's latest snapshot data has fare affordability tracking along at the most unaffordable levels ever.

It is time that action to address the failed fare structure for public transport in SEQ was implemented to give fare relief for everyone.

Yours sincerely,

Robert

Re: SEQ: Fare unaffordability crisis continues - Time for fare action

Greetings,

A letter to the Editor Queensland Times published  25th November 2015 page 15

Brisbanetimes has also highlighted the QCOSS initiative for pre-loaded go cards for the disadvantage citing the high cost of fares in SEQ an issue.

Brisbanetimes --> Transport2Court program puts $15 Go Cards in hands of court defendants

The fare structure and fare unaffordability for SEQ is a crisis.  It needs rapid sorting.

The evidence is stark.

Best wishes,
Robert

Is Jackie Trad or Mark Bailey going to make an interim statement on this? On how the fare review is progressing? (Going ahead with connecession fares for unemployed?) It's good communication etiquitte to do so.

One would hope so.  Yes, it would be good to actually have some public communication.  Communication is not this Government's strong point is it?

I over heard a group in the bus today that paid cash fares saying that they were better off catching a cab from Kelvin Grove to the Cbd instead of paying 14.00 on the bus. If they could tap on with a master visa Apple pay or Android pay it would be much more convenient. But looks like Android and Apple pay are a way off as no agreement with the big banks. But I guess you can still use their own NFC apps in the mean time!?

I think the sale of paper tickets (cash fares) is cruel and unusual punishment ...

It's like the Public servants wage rise Why is it all going up above inflation?
Inflation 1.5% Rises for Governemt departments & employees 2.5%?

petey3801

How many times does that moron need to be told? The actual Labor promise was that fares would not go up more than CPI and that 2.5% is the overall average of CPI over the past few years, which is what the Federal Liberal Government is using, hence it was the best figure to use in the Budget papers. Trad told him this several times in the Budget Estimates hearings, yet he still doesn't get it... Extremely happy this moron is not our Transport Minister still.

Reject lazy Opposition stunts

Greetings,

Yesterday, the Shadow Transport Minister put out a statement calling on the new Transport Minister to ' reject Trad's slug on commuters '

Errr,  there is no planned 2.5% fare hike.  The 2.5% is a budget contingency and as was detailed during budget estimates is just a working estimate of the CPI.  Fares may well increase in line with the CPI, but that is probably going to be in the order of 1.5% or so.  In any case, a fare review is proceeding so it is not yet clear what will happen with the fare structure next year. There may or may not be a CPI increase.

Attention to detail needed Mr Emerson.

Best wishes
Robert

I only can see fares going up. The Governemt has just approved a 2.5 % increase in wages for public servants I guess that includes the QR payroll. It will no doubt be passed onto the Public, unless there is some outcome at COAG and the Harperreview for bonus payments from the Federal Government. Dont think that will cover the wage rises though in relation to public transport.

If fares increase it will be CPI ( ~ 1.5%).  This was confirmed in 2015 budget estimates.

" I do want to reassure the committee that the commitment that we
made at the time of the election in relation to fare increases of 1.5 per cent will be honoured on 1
January this year. It will only increase by CPI."
