ABC News --> Government defends one week's notice for public transport changes in Adelaide

Quote
A decision to cut back public transport services over the Christmas and New Year period with just one week's notice has been labelled "a mess" by the South Australian Liberal Party.

Adelaide's train, tram and bus timetables will be amended from Monday next week and will reduce the frequency of some routes across the metropolitan area on working days while others will be cut altogether.

Opposition transport spokesman Corey Wingard said the fact the State Government had only told people about the changes one week out of Christmas was "totally disrespectful to public transport users".

"It's such a short period of time to turn your life around, at a time of year when people are going to the city and shopping, still working," he said.

"To tell people one week out, it's just a mess."

Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan told 891 ABC Adelaide that the changes, which were announced on the Adelaide Metro website on Monday, reflect lower patronage over the holiday season and would save the Government $150,000.

He said the Government had been "thinking about it for some time" and had been talking with bus companies over the past few weeks to reduce services.

Public informed 'electronically'

Mr Mullighan said people were being informed though electronic communications as well as through onboard signage.

He said even the best public relations campaigns would result in some people being "inconvenienced".

"I recognise that," he said.

"If people are inconvenienced because they would have liked a couple of weeks' notice, I'll take that on board."

Mr Mullighan added that the Liberal Party should be the "last to criticise" the Government for its approach to public transport because it had little to propose in the way of improved services during March's state election.

"And we've got a Federal Liberal Government that's telling all state governments that they won't help invest in public infrastructure," he said.

Metropolitan bus, train and tram services would operate to an amended timetable on weekdays between December 22 and January 2.

Services would remain normal on public holidays and on weekends.
