A Hunter Valley public transport advocacy group has secured a meeting with government representatives to discuss additional train services for the Hunter line.

Two More Trains for Singleton has been actively campaigning for about five years to get two additional daily services for the Upper Hunter.

It is also campaigning for the Newcastle line's retention and will participate in an event on Friday to highlight the impact next month's planned closure will have on commuters.

Group spokesman Martin Fallding said after receiving federal government support for a meeting on extra trains, the state government has given its support.

"The NSW Transport Minister has advised that representative of Transport for NSW will meet with Two More Trains for Singleton and the Australian Rail Track Corporation," he said.

"Just to look at the opportunities that may exist to progress the idea of more frequent train services."

It believes with residential developments at Lochinvar, Branxton and Huntlee underway that the local councils should be involved to advise on the need for local public transport services.

Mr Fallding said participation by the councils would strengthen the discussions.

"A meeting between Transport for NSW, community representatives and the Australian Rail Track Corporation is a first step and its a good step," he said.

"But a meeting to talk about additional train services really needs to involve local government and other people interested such as the NSW Minerals Council, so think it needs to be broadened a little."
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...
