Townsville Myor Backs Daylight Saving

QuoteDaylight saving poll gets emphatic 88% yes result

THE deputy mayors of Brisbane and Townsville have thrown their support behind a fresh daylight saving trial.

Brisbane Deputy Mayor Adrian Schrinner is pushing for Queensland to trial daylight saving to help boost the economy, 25 years after residents voted against it.

Queensland stands with WA and the NT as the only Australian regions that don't wind clocks forward an hour for six months each October.
Cr Schrinner has been garnering online support through a poll for a fresh trial after the state's last one was held for three years from 1989.

Cr Schrinner told The Courier-Mail the time was ripe for another trial in either the whole state or at least the southeast.

"A daylight savings trial for one or two seasons would give people an idea of how it would work in Queensland conditions," Cr Schrinner said. "They could then decide if it's something they want to stick with or keep the existing situation."

Townsville Deputy Mayor Les Walker agreed the idea had merit, telling The Courier-Mail households would likely save money on power as families capitalised on natural light.

Interesting twist in the story - save on power bills, support Daylight Saving

Pools and sporting fields don't need to use their lights in the eve. Not everyone uses Air Con everyday from Oct to Nov when they arrive home. So yes, there is power savings to be had.

QuoteIt's been 25 years since the last trial of Daylight Saving in Queensland*and it appears people in the sunshine state are keen for another if a new survey is anything to go by.

Brisbane Deputy Mayor*Adrian Schrinner has openly expressed his support for Daylight Saving to be adopted in Qld and he has now thrown his support behind a public survey*asking people their thoughts on the topic.

The survey reads: "Its been 25 years since the last trial of Daylight Saving ended in Queensland. Do you support a new trial being held?"

As of *Monday, the results showed that 88% of people were in favour of a new Daylight Saving trial in Qld, with just 12% a strong 'no' and 1% undecided.

Start it this coming October. Mount Isa and Birdsville should go on Central Time CDT/CST in which the same happens in NSW with BrokenHill to correct the anomaly due to being so far west. The rest of Qld goes on Eastern Daylight and Standard Time all year for the majority of the Qld population to be in synchronisation with NSW Act Vic and Tas all year. Among other benefits.

Arnz

^^

Problem is North & Central Queensland, plus far West Queensland are strongly opposed to DST.

If DST is to be introduced to Qld it'll likely be the SEQ area only (plus Toowoomba, as north of Wide Bay/Bundaberg (at a stretch) and as far west as Dalby (at a stretch)).

Except that many people will use their air con for longer due to it being hotter in the afternoon/evening in the summer for an extra hour. Air con uses a lot more electricity than lights in a household.

Oh for f**ks sake. This again. Just wake up an hour earlier you useless queensland bastards! Too hot to do stuff in the arvo. Too much congestion. Too many annoying people out there.

This argument is incredibly stupid. As a uni student who works part time, I cannot simply ask my friend to move his birthday forward an hour so it fits my self-imposed daylight saving, nor ask my lecturers to move my classes, or ask work to move my shifts back an hour to fit 'daylight saving'.

Unless you have flexible work hours, no school-age children and don't interact much with the outside world, it isn't as simple as "waking up earlier".

Fun fact: on January 10 (or it's northern equivalent, July 10), the sun rises at 4:56am in London and 5:03am in Brisbane. By comparison, the sun sets at 9:16pm in London and 6:48pm in Brisbane. There's a reason Brisbane is a grandpa town, it's because just like grandma and grandpa, the sun here wakes up really early then goes to bed by 7pm. Get woken up by the heat, go to work, get home in time to watch the sun set and get bitten by 1000 mosquitos.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

Business leaders and Mayors push for a Daylight Saving Trial

QuoteCOUNCIL leaders representing more than half of Queensland's 4.7 million residents want daylight saving trialled again in a call echoed by the state's peak business body.

Mayors of the Gold Coast, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay and Mackay want to see another trial of the initiative 25 years after the last one finished. Combined with Brisbane and Townsville deputy mayors, who pushed the move yesterday, the community leaders represent about 3 million voters, or 64 per cent of Queensland residents, according to 2015 Bureau of Statistics data.

Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson, who has 20 years of business experience, said not having daylight saving was "a bit of an embuggerance in terms of business" when it came to dealing with southern-state counterparts

Time to give Daylight Saving a go!

QuoteOpinion: It's time for another Daylight Saving trial in Queensland

Kylie Lang, The Courier-Mail

Daylight saving Queensland: New push for trial

IF Brisbane residents want more daylight, they should get out of bed earlier. Simple. Stupid, more like it.

Katter Australian Party MP for Mt Isa Robbie Katter is kidding if he thinks this is the answer.

What the bulk of Queenslanders, who choose to live in the southeast, and larger regional cities like Townsville and Cairns want is the chance to give daylight saving a go.

With 88 per cent of us in favour a trial, according to a new survey, why the resistance?

The last time Queensland trialled winding the clocks forward an hour for six months each October was 1992.

A subsequent referendum was narrowly defeated, yet every year since petitions have been put to Parliament to bring us in line with our southern counterparts of NSW and Victoria.

Mr Katter might not like it, but it is high time to try it again.

Constructive debate on Daylight Saving vital

QuoteDAYLIGHT saving has long been an issue of contention in Queensland. It is one of those rare subjects on which everyone has an opinion and therefore terrifies governments of every stripe because there is no popular answer.

It remains a perpetual January argument. As the people of the southeast are shocked awake by a dawn chorus as early as 4am, the people of the northwest do not relish the idea of yet another hour of heat and light well into the late evening.

The point is, everyone needs to move their clocks together for it to work.

No point getting up early if public transport isn't running (Especially on the Northside of Brisbane), shops arent open, cant make noise etc.

Special events and other "spare time" activites are normally in the evening....

Thats why we have late night shopping on a Thursday, not "early morning shopping".

Why has Daylight Saving for SE Qld come up? Even though I would support Daylight Saving in the South East it's not good for logistics Airlines, Qld Government departments and other statewide businesses. Prefer to advocate for Statewide Daylight Saving in Qld having Mount ISA and Birdsville of Central Time CDT/CST the same as Broken Hill, NSW and Adelaide in SA. Those towns are so far West in Qld that something should of been done year ago to correct the anomaly. Mount ISA and Birdsville will then be 30mins behind Brisbane all year which is not a big ask.

Arnz

Probably due to if it did come down to a referendum, most of regional Queensland (except Businesses, ex-NSW/VIC residents & Poltical figures) would likely oppose it whereas the majority of South East Queensland would support it.
Rgds,
Arnz

Unless stated otherwise, Opinions stated in my posts are those of my own view only.

Arnz

It's now become a political issue.
http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/queensland/daylight-saving-premier-rules-out-two-time-zones-20170117-gtstyz.html

The LNP and the far right alternatives such as KAP and PHON aren't likely to touch this issue with a 4 foot pole considering their power bases are in the regional areas.  Although some LNP pollies may personally support DST.

It would likely mean political suicide for those parties from their regional powerbases if they "pander to the SEQ corner".

Time-zones in Queensland haven't been adjusted since implementation. Therefore haven't progressed with the current times. Due to population changes in #Queensland. Its time to look at the Western Time line/border of Queensland and shift it East to include #MountIsa #Birdsville #Cloncurry and other surrounding towns maybe as far east as #Longreach. A review into this can open up the whole state to have #DaylightSaving. If Mount Isa were to go on Central Daylight Time the same as Broken Hill, sunrise today would be at 6.46am and sunset at 7.59pm. Birdsville example would be sunrise today at 6.37am and sunset at 8.10pm. To have these regions on Central Daylight and Central Standard time all year is a good compromise that would be good for State and intersate business and to allow the rest of the state to operate on Eastern Standard and Eastern Daylight all throughout the year. Even though these regions may have a 30 minutes time difference with Brisbane all year, it will only affect 25,000 people out of an estimated total population of 5,000,000 for Queensland.

QuoteGold Coast Airport straddles two time zones: ground zero of daylight savings debate

Kathleen Skene, Gold Coast Bulletin

January 18, 2017 12:00am

THE Gold Coast is on the front line of a renewed push for daylight savings, with local business and community leaders saying the different time zone is harming the region's lifestyle, tourism and wider economy.

Gold Coast Airport straddles two different time zones almost six months of every year but operates under Queensland time to minimise confusion over departure and arrival times.

Queensland Airport Ltd CEO Chris Mills said the Gold Coast-to-Sydney air route is the fourth busiest in the nation, with Gold Coast-Melbourne the seventh busiest.

1 hour timezone variation over Summer costing GoldCoast's and Brisbane's economy

https://t.co/anjFQkyFkB

QuoteTime zone variation costing Gold Coast millions in dollars and jobs

Kathleen Skene, Chief reporter, Gold Coast Bulletin

January 19, 2017 12:00am

THE Gold Coast is copping an economic hit potentially worth hundreds of millions of dollars as a result of having the nation's earliest sunset.

However the exact amount of the losses have not been quantified because no-one has done a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis of daylight savings for the city.

Dr Michael Raybould, an economist and Associate Professor of Tourism Management at Bond University, said the impact of not aligning with New South Wales and Victoria was wide ranging, but particularly harmful for business and tourism.

"I can see a variety of impacts and economic penalties for us (for not having daylight savings)," he said.
