Over 60% of Couriermail readers are in favour of the reintroduction of Daylight Saving in Qld.

Couriermail.com.au---> Should Queensland introduce daylight savings?

Gazza

And CM readers are all boomers so imagine the support among under 40s.

I wonder if Queensland will get Daylight Saving out of this #olympics2032 bid? #DaylightSaving #QLD #qldpol

Considering the games are likely to be held in August for weather reasons, it probably wouldn't make any difference.

verbatim9

The Sydney games were also held.in August September but they still brought Daylight Saving forward. This was because of International media request.

I wouldn't call August perfect weather in Qld. Usually quite volatile.

It's pretty good usually for athletics and the like. Rarely rains, not too hot. The main problem could be wind, but depending on how stadiums are constructed, much of the wind could be kept out.

Not sure how DST benefits international audiences, though?

DLS has zero impact. It's actually worse bringing it forward. Having events later have higher viewership numbers as you go into the European market later in the morning instead of really early in the morning. Same reason as to why international Motorsport races in Australia keep pushing for later starting times on the back of international tennis matches bringing in bigger numbers with their later time slot matches. Sucks for locals that have to leave stadiums at 12-1am but numbers in other markets are massive as a result.

It has to do with the American market as they are on Daylight Saving at that time. The extra hour ahead allows for better synchronisation of live events.

Couriermail----> Daylight saving Queensland: It's time to have a referendum, writes Peter Gleeson

QuoteQueensland can't get on the same page as NSW and Victoria, let's legislate to make daylight saving mandatory. A referendum is the only way forward, writes Peter Gleeson. TAKE OUR POLL

SurfRail

Obvious leading poll with no probative value.
Ride the G:

Gazza

Indeed, if its a poll, just have yes or no, there is no need to attach a sentence.

SurfRail

It's a normal Murdoch trope - you could have both those answers for nearly any issue and generate a similar result.

I've no doubt it is popular (my avowed position is I don't care one way or the other) but there's no reason to make up stuff for or against.
Ride the G:

pangwen

The sentence following the options is so leading it makes the results useless. Using a similar type of emotive language as some online news publishers, I could get a poll that went the other way:

Yes, the government should waste money on another vote
No, don't let the nanny state touch my clocks

Lets just give it go for a few years, then vote on it with the Local Government Elections in March 2024.

Qld Government---> DAYLIGHT SAVING IN QUEENSLAND

Queensland really needs it as opposed to other states, as most of the population on East Coast of Queensland is positioned to far east. This consequently positions Qld in the incorrect time zone, but Daylight Saving can help alleviate the very early sunrises in summer. The far west of the state should be on Central time the same way Broken Hill is. So Mt Isa down to Birdsville should shift 30 min back to Adelaide time permanently.

achiruel

Queensland really doesn't need daylight savings. Even Europe is moving away from it, particularly the southern areas. Having daylight savings in subtropical and tropical areas makes zero sense, but you've got your blinders so firmly affixed you can't see it.

EU is moving 1 hour ahead permanently. Singapore and Malaysia both have permanent Daylight Saving. Fiji and  Samoa has Daylight Saving as well, which are in tropical and sub tropical zones.

It's better for Queensland to be on the same time zone as southern states all year for logistical and business purposes.

Gazza

If it's permanent daylight savings doesnt that just mean the country is in a different time zone now?

verbatim9

Yeah Queensland could go +11 all year around, Except for Mt Isa down to Birdsville. Those towns should be +10.5

It's a debate that's stood the test of time. Daylight saving begins in less than two weeks and again, Queensland will lag behind our southern neighbours. Gold Coast Bulletin---> Daylight Savings: New argument claims program's return to QLD could help economic recovery from Covid

QuoteDaylight Savings: New argument claims program's return to QLD could help economic recovery from Covid

Daylight Saving Time is a heated topic that is debated twice every year. So what are the arguments of those for and against the time shift?

Queensland resident David Jones, of Wynnum, argues joining NSW – when clocks go forward an hour next month – will have social and economic benefits in a petition to state parliament earlier this month.

It appears Mr Jones is well supported in his claims, with more than 3000 signatures amassed in the petition's first week – but Currumbin MP Laura Gerber isn't as convinced.

"I'm not sure this is the biggest issue for Queenslanders right now. Most are concerned about getting the state vaccinated, the health care system, and the State government losing control and blowing out hospital wait times, our youth crime epidemic," she said.

Mr Jones argued in his submission the state was "economically and socially disadvantaged" without daylight savings: "This causes deep divisions within our community as Queensland is out of sync with all other eastern states for six months of the year."

By not reinstating the program, the state is estimated to lose more than $4 billion annually "due to business inefficiencies and missed tourism and retail opportunities", he said.

Couriermail.com.au --> Opinion: Qld must adopt daylight saving in time for 2032 Olympics

Adrian Schrinner

QuoteJust like Brisbane's blossoming jacarandas, few things are more perennial in Queensland than the annual daylight saving debate.

Each year as residents in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT gear up to adjust their clocks, Queenslanders assume their time-honoured positions over whether or not we should join them.

The late former premier Wayne Goss predicted this would happen three decades ago when speaking on the rather curiously named "Summer Time Repeal Bill".

"I have no doubt that, while the repeal of the Summer Time Act 1990 will see an end to daylight saving in Queensland, the debate on daylight saving – and the absence of it in Queensland – will continue," he said.

How right he was.

As many Brisbane residents would know, I've long supported daylight saving.

The clock is ticking on when, rather than if, it will be reintroduced.

I understand the strongly held views of people who live in the west and north of the state who don't want to wind their clocks forward an hour over the hotter months of spring and summer. Some parts of our vast state effectively have year-round daylight saving already given the hour that the sun sets.

verbatim9

Yes, reintroduce Daylight Saving now to improve business and societal outcomes in Queensland. For the Olympic year, run Daylight Saving all year to cover the proposed dates for the games in July and August.

It all boils down to personal preference.  I find the arguments for and against to be quite underwhelming.

Brisbane Times--->Thirty years since the daylight saving poll, a new generation deserves its say

QuoteIf Labor can lead against those who refuse to get vaccinated, then surely they can lead against the small minority who are not for any form of daylight saving," he said.

Central to opposition from the north-west of the state is the impost a change in timezone would have in those hot regions that already have later sunsets. In Mr Katter's petition, he notes Queensland's geographic divide.

"Recent university research has claimed that [daylight saving time] is supported by 60 per cent of Queenslanders, and therefore it should be introduced immediately," he said.

"However, this is underwhelming support when considering 73 per cent of Queenslanders live in the south-east corner, which is the only region in the state that typically desires longer days."

To allay concerns from rural Queensland, Mr Lloyd suggested following the lead of New South Wales. There, the outback town of Broken Hill, not far from the South Australian border, operates on Central time.
