Fraser Chronicle --> Bombardier to downsize and close M'boro factory

QuoteBombardier Transportation expects to reduce capacity at its Maryborough factory in April 2015, followed by a further reduction in August 2015 ahead of its eventual closure. Tracey Joynson

BOMBARDIER Transportation plans to downsize and close its factory in Maryborough's March St.

"The reduction in capacity is expected to commence in April 2015, followed by a further reduction in August 2015 to a small team who will finalise contracts currently being delivered,"  the company said in a Maryborough site news statement.

"We have continued to explore opportunities to further utilise the site however the current workload does not warrant the continued operations at Maryborough.

"By the end of 2015, the Maryborough factory will have completed the majority of current contractual commitments in place for the site.

"We will be working closely with our employees to identify other opportunities within Bombardier as a priority for those affected.

"Everything in our power is being done to ensure the employees at Maryborough are redeployed into different areas of the business wherever possible.

"This decision has not been made lightly as Bombardier has a proud history of over 35 years manufacturing in Maryborough and has helped deliver significant projects such as Brisbane's first electric passenger trains."
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...

You can't fully blame the government for this. Even if they were the winning bidder who is to say they wouldn't do what EDI did south ie have the bodies made for cheap as chips overseas and then have final assembly here.
